To think that pork is not red meat??

DH and I have an ongoing debate about this.

I say pork is white meat because, er, it's not red when prepared to eat. When I was growing up, there used to be ads on tv promoting pork as "the other white meat" (as opposed to chicken).

DH argument is that chickens can fly and pigs, along with cows and lambs, can't Hmm. I pointed out that on this logic, salmon, broccoli and breakfast cereal could also be considered "red meat". His counter argument is that it just is.

Please come and tell him he is wrong settle this!

I have always said that pork was a red meat. Sorry!

PacificDogwood · 09/11/2014 17:36

Ahem.

Well.

I see your argument and cannot disagree with your logic.
But you are still wrong Grin - chicken/turkey etc is white meat, beef and pork and venison is red meat. By definition. Nought to do with what colour is actually is.

FryOneFatManic · 09/11/2014 17:38

This might help.

The definition of pork is still unclear, but I've always understood it as red meat.

Jelliebabe2 · 09/11/2014 17:38

Yup, pork is classed as a red meat

Tsoukalosy · 09/11/2014 17:39

I have always thought pork was white meat but I don't know the reason behind it? Maybe something to do with something it contains like proteins? Would be interesting to know.

PacificDogwood · 09/11/2014 17:41

All meat IS protein.

Both chicken and lean pork (visible fat cut off) are v lean meats - maybe that's what you meant?

Lonecatwithkitten · 09/11/2014 17:41

Under meat hygiene definitions pork is red meat. As an official vet in an abattoir that processes pork you need a 'red meat ticket'.
'White meat ticket' covers turkey and chicken.

Alisvolatpropiis · 09/11/2014 17:41

I was discussing this with a friend earlier in the week. We couldn't work it out. Blush

Tsoukalosy · 09/11/2014 17:42

Oh that might be what I meant pacificdogwood

Alisvolatpropiis · 09/11/2014 17:42

But now I know and can pass it on to friend!

MajesticWhine · 09/11/2014 17:43

YABU, pork is red meat.

poolomoomon · 09/11/2014 17:43

At one point in my younger years I only ate chicken and fish. There's no definition for this so I would just say "I don't eat red meat." Quite a few people thought this meant I still ate pork because it's white in colour...

Personally I class it as red meat despite its colour. White meat is chicken and turkey IMO.

Trills · 09/11/2014 17:43

Is the distinction actually mammals vs birds, with colour having nothing to do with it?

RevoltingPeasant · 09/11/2014 17:44

Huh. I was so going to show him this thread in triumph.

RevoltingPeasant · 09/11/2014 17:45

Okay, so if it is not red in colour, why is it red meat?

Please don't tell me it's because it can't fly Hmm

I don't like pork so I have no idea I it's classed as red or white meat, but I always thought the phrase "the other white meat" referred to cannibalism.

OpenSandwich · 09/11/2014 17:46

But that means that white meat, is in fact just poultry. So why not just call it poultry?

have a funny feeling snake and frog is white meat though. At any rate it apparently tastes like chicken

OpenSandwich · 09/11/2014 17:47

What is rabbit?

PacificDogwood · 09/11/2014 17:47

I'd go with 'It's red meat because it's a mammal' explanation.

I can only apologise for agreeing with your DP, RevoltingPeasant, soz.

That link is really interesting, FryOne - it is a bit arbitrary.

OpenSandwich · 09/11/2014 17:48

And what about duck?

PacificDogwood · 09/11/2014 17:48

Oh, rabbit is SO red meat Grin

It's from a mammal as opposed to a bird. Also wild boar is very red because it runs around and eats real piggy food whereas your typical farmed pig doesn't.

PacificDogwood · 09/11/2014 17:50

Well, turkey has red (thigh) and white (breast) meat, doesn't it?
Confused

PacificDogwood · 09/11/2014 17:50

Grin @ cannibalism
I suspect human meat is red meat as well
