To think that pork is not red meat??

RevoltingPeasant · 09/11/2014 17:33

DH and I have an ongoing debate about this.

I say pork is white meat because, er, it's not red when prepared to eat. When I was growing up, there used to be ads on tv promoting pork as "the other white meat" (as opposed to chicken).

DH argument is that chickens can fly and pigs, along with cows and lambs, can't Hmm. I pointed out that on this logic, salmon, broccoli and breakfast cereal could also be considered "red meat". His counter argument is that it just is.

Please come and tell him he is wrong settle this!

Always a school day on MN Grin

Just checked the NHS plate...eggs are in with meats on there so I definitely made up what I said a minute ago Smile . Not uncommon when I'm half asleep. Night!

ZingOfSeven · 10/11/2014 02:18

calm down you two!
I know eggs are not dairy!

but every time I say "xyz can't eat dairy" people ask "so no eggs either"?Confused

and that lead to several discussions about them trying to convince me that milk etc and eggs are part of the same industry or whatever bollocks they came up with, so when you say "dairy products" many people default that to mean all milk based foods & eggs.
in England. (or UK? I forget)
maybe it's to do with that milkmen (or milkpersons if you prefer) would deliver eggs too? I don't know. but I heard that some children when asked what foods we get from cows would include eggsConfused nice one, if true

Easter eggs = bunny shags chicken
Cow eggs = ?!

But what do I know. I never saw a chicken flyGrin

TsukuruTazaki · 10/11/2014 03:19

I've always considered it red meat and never even questioned that! Definitely don't see how it is a white meat

musicalendorphins2 · 10/11/2014 04:43

Pork is red meat, ask any certified nutritionist! I had to prove it to dh as well.

CruCru · 10/11/2014 08:26

Chickens are descended from jungle fowl which can fly. My understanding is that chickens can fly enough to hide in a tree but usually have their feathers clipped to stop this. Might be worth asking in whatever the chicken section is here.

kentishgirl · 10/11/2014 09:29

Chickens can fly but in a flappy rubbish way to get themselves over fences or up a tree, rather than gracefully swooping across the sky.

Alicebannedit · 10/11/2014 09:53

What about crocodile then? Has four legs but tastes like chicken - acc the label on the fancy box of mixed exotic burgers I just bought from Iceland.

For fun.

But I think I'll wait til I'm over this chest virus thingy before I dare try any....

TooMuchCantBreathe · 10/11/2014 16:51

Crocodile is white meat. .. She says confidently Hmm

Because according to this sea mammals have 100 x more myoglobin than crocodiles - case closed Confused Grin

RevoltingPeasant · 10/11/2014 17:41

Hmm, all right you lot - what about flightless birds, then, eh?

Would the dodo have been red or white meat?

Zing - Easter eggs = bunny shags chicken Easter in your house sounds MUCH more interesting than in mine, that's all I'll say Wink

Alice

I thought it tasted more like tuna when I ate it in Texas.

Alicebannedit · 11/11/2014 15:09

Alis

Thanks - I shall bear that in mind when I eventually get around to eating it!

CruCru · 11/11/2014 18:57

Crocodile meat is a white colour, similar to chicken or turkey. I ate crocodile rolls in South Africa. Funnily enough they were fed on chickens from the local poultry farm. I had always thought you should avoid eating carnivores, something to do with an escalation of toxins.

HSMMaCM · 11/11/2014 19:11

I've always thought pork was white meat. I am ignoring all the arguments on here and can confirm your DH is wrong Grin.

DidoTheDodo · 11/11/2014 19:17

Eating dodo, OP? I think NOT.

ZingOfSeven · 11/11/2014 19:36

Dido

the last dodo I ate tasted delish. but you can't find them anywhere. discontinued perhaps?Grin

DidoTheDodo · 12/11/2014 14:24

Huh. I wondered where my leg had gone.
