To think that pork is not red meat??

DH and I have an ongoing debate about this.

I say pork is white meat because, er, it's not red when prepared to eat. When I was growing up, there used to be ads on tv promoting pork as "the other white meat" (as opposed to chicken).

DH argument is that chickens can fly and pigs, along with cows and lambs, can't Hmm. I pointed out that on this logic, salmon, broccoli and breakfast cereal could also be considered "red meat". His counter argument is that it just is.

Please come and tell him he is wrong settle this!

Ah so bacon is red meat, piglet is white and pork is erm undecided?

I've always cooked pork pink so therfore it suits me if it's red Grin

Waxlyrically · 09/11/2014 18:16

I have always thought pork was a white meat and that along with chicken it goes with white wine. Red meats are lamb and beef which go with red wine.

ZingOfSeven · 09/11/2014 18:19

chickens don't fly though. they flap about but don't fly.

so that makes them red meat too.

is this like egg is dairy despite it not coming from a cow?

LoveWillTearUsApart · 09/11/2014 18:21

I've always believed pork is white meat. I'm sure that was a common belief when I grew up (80s/90s).

RevoltingPeasant · 09/11/2014 18:22

Zing egg is not dairy! What fresh hell is this?

So basically what I am taking from this thread is that it's ambiguous and therefore I could be am right....

Thanks MN!

Why does it matter?

PiperIsOrangePumpkins · 09/11/2014 18:26

www.nhs.uk/Livewell/Goodfood/Pages/red-meat.aspx

It's red meat

PiperIsOrangePumpkins · 09/11/2014 18:27

It's to do with the myoglobin levels.

waceystills · 09/11/2014 18:40

I thought pork was red meat and you can indeed eat it rare.

TooMuchCantBreathe · 09/11/2014 18:43

The myoglobin in pork is around halfway between red and white meat though Grin

extremepie · 09/11/2014 18:43

You shouldn't eat it rare (plus it probably wouldn't taste too good :/) but you can eat it slightly pink as it keeps the moisture in :)

PacificDogwood · 09/11/2014 21:43

Whether red or white or pink, do NOT ear pork raw Envy

PourquoiTuGachesTaVie · 09/11/2014 21:52

I've heard people eat raw bacon. Plus what is parma ham? Isn't that raw? all I know is I tried it once and it was awful

I always thought pork was white meat, now I have no idea at all.

PacificDogwood · 09/11/2014 21:53

Nope, parma ham is cured, not sure by which method but it's either smoked or salt cured, not at all raw.

Sunny67 · 09/11/2014 22:26

I remember being told at school that if it's got four legs it's red.

QuintsBombWithAWiew · 09/11/2014 22:28

What about kangaroos then?

jezzapaxmanslovechild · 09/11/2014 22:35

Jesus! I'm just going to have a nice slice of toast... :-/

RevoltingPeasant · 09/11/2014 22:46

Parma ham is lush. Cannot eat it ATM as pg, boo! It is not raw though.

Alisvolatpropiis · 09/11/2014 23:26

Kangaroos do have four legs don't they? Just two are rather smaller

Jolleigh · 09/11/2014 23:27

Hold the phone...eggs aren't dairy?!?

WowserBowser · 09/11/2014 23:31

No, they aren't milk or by products of milk etc.

They are from chickens Grin

overthemill · 09/11/2014 23:36

zing chickens fly. Unless you clip their wings regularly. All my chickens can fly ( usually into next doors garden)

Jolleigh · 09/11/2014 23:40

I know they're from chickens Grin . But I'd thought that non-meat/blood edible animal products were all dairy? Aren't eggs in the dairy section of the flawed NHS blanaced diet plate?

Jolleigh · 09/11/2014 23:44

It actually makes sense now I think about the word 'dairy'. Huh. You learn something new every day.
