To think that pork is not red meat??

RevoltingPeasant · 09/11/2014 17:33

DH and I have an ongoing debate about this.

I say pork is white meat because, er, it's not red when prepared to eat. When I was growing up, there used to be ads on tv promoting pork as "the other white meat" (as opposed to chicken).

DH argument is that chickens can fly and pigs, along with cows and lambs, can't Hmm. I pointed out that on this logic, salmon, broccoli and breakfast cereal could also be considered "red meat". His counter argument is that it just is.

Please come and tell him he is wrong settle this!

My brain just lost the plot then and answered the what is rabbit question with rabbit is duck. Confused That'll teach me from reading while I scroll.

OpenSandwich · 09/11/2014 17:52

Rabbit is a mammal, duck is a bird. Yet their meats are the wrong way round. Frog is neither.

This makes no sense.

BankWadger · 09/11/2014 17:52

Isn't thigh meat dark rather than red? It's certainly tastier Grin

RevoltingPeasant · 09/11/2014 17:52

tyke Grin

The other white meat was a US advertising slogan in the 90s. It was some pork farmers' consortium that sponsored the ads. I'm sure they would be horrified to learn they were actually promoting cannibalism.

So yeah, why not call it poultry??

Human will be the same as pig. We are very similar.

Tsoukalosy · 09/11/2014 17:53

I don't get the meat colour co-coordinating either... Unless its green meat then avoid.

BankWadger · 09/11/2014 17:53

In books I've read people are called long pig.

RevoltingPeasant · 09/11/2014 17:54

Pacific are you suggesting turkeys are some bizarre poultry / mammal hybrid? Possibly because their legs walk like pigs but their breasts have wings?? Wink

We need to eat less red meat. I am now very confused as to how. Better stick to Quorn.

extremepie · 09/11/2014 17:55

Hmm....

When I was at catering college red meat was beef & lamb whereas pork & veal were white meat. Duck, chicken, turkey etc are poultry & are in a different category altogether!

So yes, according to me (& other chefs) you are right :D

MissPenelopeLumawoo2 · 09/11/2014 17:57

I always classed it with poultry as you can't eat it rare, whereas you can red meat. But then you can eat duck rare, and that is poultry? It is very confusing!

OwlWearingSunglasses · 09/11/2014 17:59

I always thought pork was white meat too - this is probably because I was told it should be cooked until the juice runs clear and not "rare" etc.

But as I can't even stand the smell of pork cooking, it's one of those things that I don't worry about.

extremepie · 09/11/2014 17:59

You can also eat (some) fish rare :D

redexpat · 09/11/2014 18:00

I used to think of it as red, but i prefer to drink white wine with white meat and red wine with red meat, and i think white wine is better with pork.

WowserBowser · 09/11/2014 18:01

In this house we always class it as a white meat! Hence why you can't eat it rare or something...

TooMuchCantBreathe · 09/11/2014 18:01

Pork is a red meat, as such it can be served rare. I don't know why though!

Ah wiki says young stock of beef, pigs etc are also white meat. ....

TooMuchCantBreathe · 09/11/2014 18:02

Now slightly concerned about rareness after hitting f5 Grin

PrettyLittleMitty · 09/11/2014 18:04

DH and I have this same argument every time we eat pork. I always thought it a white meat, DH says red, I will not be showing him this thread!

FraidyCat · 09/11/2014 18:05

Wikipedia is quite interesting on this, apparently the definition of "red meat" is that it must be red when raw and not white when cooked, however that would mean pork isn't red meat and tuna is, neither of which are apparently correct.

Wikipedias bottom line is that nutritionists regard meat from mammals as red meat.

lougle · 09/11/2014 18:06

There's no definitive answer, so you can both go back to your corners with grace. Grin

Nutritionally, it is a red meat. In culinary terms it's a white meat (red when raw, turns white when turned to leather thoroughly cooked).

If you cook pork until it's tender but cooked, it tends to remain slightly pink. People used to cook it for much longer because it could contain roundworm, but it's virtually irradicated in commercial pork now. www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2011/may/26/cooking-pork-safely-the-science

WowserBowser · 09/11/2014 18:06

TooMuch Grin

I know some chefs have started cooking it a bit 'pinker'

StrattersFeeear · 09/11/2014 18:08

I thought pork was white meat. Confused

extremepie · 09/11/2014 18:09

Either way pork is bloody lovely, it's my favourite meat :D craving hot roast now

extremepie · 09/11/2014 18:09

^hog roast!

DocMcStuffinsBigBookOfOuches · 09/11/2014 18:10

So why is bacon pink?
