to never sing along with God Save the Queen?

LovleyRitaMeterMaid · 09/11/2014 12:28

The fact I never sing it comes up now and again and today was one of those times, at our local remembrance day parade. Right at the end the minister said 'and we'll now sing our national anthem'. I can't recall God Save the Queen being part of it,before but regardless I just stand and don't song. I don't make a big thing of it, I just don't sing.

Simiraly the Edinburgh tattoo it was sang, I stood alongside everyone but didn't sing.

I don't make a big fuss and thankfully I'm not at any events where it's sang

Dh says it's rude. I say she's not my queen, I wish her no ill but I will not sing that song.

Could be worse. You lot could all be singing Advance Australia Fair.

Verse 1
Australians all let us rejoice,
For we are young and free;
We've golden soil and wealth for toil;
Our home is girt by sea;
Our land abounds in nature's gifts
Of beauty rich and rare;
In history's page, let every stage
Advance Australia Fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia Fair.

Verse 2
Beneath our radiant Southern Cross
We'll toil with hearts and hands;
To make this Commonwealth of ours
Renowned of all the lands;
For those who've come across the seas
We've boundless plains to share;
With courage let us all combine
To Advance Australia Fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia Fair.

Girt? Who uses the word girt ever!
Boundless plains to share? Not under our new PM's policies.
Natures gifts? Govt plans on bulldozing heritage listed forest for logging and dumping waste in the reef.

At least GSTQ is the anthem version of a power ballad. You can gave a good sing to it.

LovleyRitaMeterMaid · 09/11/2014 19:42

I will correct you and find it rather odd you have went to lengths to reach that conclusion.

Are you suggesting Scottish people are anti monarchy as a whole?

OP posts:
Pumpkinpositive · 09/11/2014 19:42

Fine, sing, don't sing- it doesn't affect anyone else anyway but it's simply delusional to insist that the Queen is not your Queen just because you don't want her to be.

I didn't see the OP say that - have skimmed the thread - I was just stating my reasons for not singing.

I agree that the Queen is, unfortunately, "our" queen. But as a fellow Scot from a 'yes' voting city no less, OP has my sympathies. Hers is an oft expressed view round these parts. If she's delusional, she's not alone. Grin

On the other hand, there are plenty of UJ waving, GSTQ singing Scots. Just not at any public events I attend, thank God.

Bunbaker · 09/11/2014 19:42

The British Empire no longer exists. Many former colonies joined the Commonwealth.

JanineStHubbins · 09/11/2014 19:43

There's no such thing as the British Empire anymore.

LovleyRitaMeterMaid · 09/11/2014 19:44

But all this empire talk makes me want to heave. Is that because I'm Scottish?

OP posts:
Pumpkinpositive · 09/11/2014 19:45

Rita

I did think it would be a little odd if someone were to say "because I'm Scottish" as a rejection of the queen. Being Scottish and a monarchist aren't mutually exclusive concepts.

Bearbehind · 09/11/2014 19:46

I didn't go go great length at all, I recognised your username from the Scottish Referendum threads.

I'm not suggesting Scottish people are anti monarchy as a whole, far from it.

I'm saying there a plenty of people who disagree with the monarchy but they don't deny that the Queen is in fact the Queen- the only possible reason I can think of for insisting that the Queen is not your Queen is because you think the place you live is not part of the British Empire.

Bearbehind · 09/11/2014 19:47

Sorry, meant Commenwealth.

Bearbehind · 09/11/2014 19:47

And I can't even spell that!

JanineStHubbins · 09/11/2014 19:48

Newsflash to Bunbaker: nowhere is part of the British Empire

ChippingInAutumnLover · 09/11/2014 19:50

You have no say in it.

She is your Queen. You might not like it, but you can't change actual facts to suit your wishes Grin

You sound like a toddler 'That's not my Queen - her Crown is too Pointy'

Grin
LovleyRitaMeterMaid · 09/11/2014 19:50

if I'm not mistaken this whole thread has come about because the OP is Scottish

I actually can't get my head around this comment at all!

If I'd opened the thread with 'I'm Scottish therefore I won't sing gstq' your comment would make sense. But I didn't. I didn't even declaring my Scottishness on this thread.

But you still conclude and dismiss my opinion on the basis that I am Scottish?

raltheraffe · 09/11/2014 19:51

I refused to say the Queen part of the Brownie promise and after a lot of umming and ahhing and having a pop at my mum they still let me be a Brownie! So the Queen bit is optional.

JanineStHubbins · 09/11/2014 19:52

Sorry, that was to Bearbehind.

Bearbehind · 09/11/2014 19:52

OK OP, please explain the reason why you think the Queen is not your Queen?

You might not like her or what the monarchy stands for but if you live in Britain, like it or not, she's actually your Queen.

ZingOfSeven · 09/11/2014 19:52

Chipping

Pumpkinpositive · 09/11/2014 19:54

pumpkin if I'm not mistaken this whole thread has come about because the OP is Scottish.

That's why she doesn't think the Queen is her Queen.

So I didn't miss it.

OP didn't say she was Scottish.

She didn't say she didn't think the queen is her queen because she is Scottish.

You just made that up, Bear? Shock

Pollyteacakes · 09/11/2014 19:56

I think it's perfectly acceptable Bear to say that if you don't agree with the monarchy. She's not accepting her as "her queen" because she doesn't agree with everything the monarchy stands for. Nothing wrong with that imo.

LovleyRitaMeterMaid · 09/11/2014 19:58

I've explained several times. I, as in me, myself, don't accept an unelected head of state as someone I should sing and bow to, fight for or feel anything for.

I would do all of the above for my country.

If you could explain your assumptions I'd be interested to hear it.

OP posts:
Bearbehind · 09/11/2014 19:58

I didn't make it up at all pumpkin as I said, I recognised the
OP's username, knew she was Scottish Yes voter and concluded that was the only possible reason for thinking the Queen was not her Queen.

If there is another reason for her thinking that then I'll happily accept it.

Bartlebee · 09/11/2014 19:59

Where are you all going that GSTQ is played?

I can't think of being anywhere, possibly ever, that it is sung.

JanineStHubbins · 09/11/2014 20:00

English republicanism has much stronger and longer roots than Scottish republicanism. Hope that doesn't blow your mind, Bearbehind Smile

raltheraffe · 09/11/2014 20:00

My mum was Scottish and dad is from Channel Isles, but that has nothing to do with my opinions about the Queen. Mum never agreed with monarchy, but dad could not care less either way.

ImTheOneThatKnocks · 09/11/2014 20:01

I never sing the national anthem either. I disapprove of the royal family (not as individuals but as an institution).

I don't want anyone to 'reign' over me Confused especially someone who only has the job because of who her parents are. It's so outdated it's unbelievable.

I wouldn't dream of making a fuss about it if I thought I might offend someone but I find it incredulous that so many people support the royal family.
