Do people really cry/laugh out loud, over threads?

Frogme · 03/11/2014 12:29

I find some threads shocking, very sad, amusing and even really funny, but I don't do any of the above.

AIBU for not reacting as extremely as some people appear to do?
AIBU in thinking people exagerate when saying these things?

I think I must have had a sense of humor bypass. I may think 'that is amusing', but that is it really.

velocity1 · 03/11/2014 19:19

I can't say I've cried over a thread..yet, but I have laughed until I cried over a few. Last nights fart thread was particularly funny, and I laughed so much I couldn't explain what was making me laugh to DP, he just shakes his head at me these days, but then he has no sense of humour anyway

ArtDecoChristmasFairy · 03/11/2014 19:21

I have laughed a lot and had laughter tears a few times, no exaggeration. Ask my DD... she just looks at me... "Don't tell me...Mumsnet" then goes Hmm (she's 24)

Thebodynowchillingsothere · 03/11/2014 19:26

Definitely laughed out loud and cited at threads but not necessarily those on aibu.

abigamarone · 03/11/2014 19:30

It's rare, but I do sometimes laugh to the point of tears at the odd thread. Few and far between though. What I am puzzled at is when I sometimes read a thread that is a bit 'trying too hard' and mildly amusing at best, and one or two posters comment on it being the funniest thread ever and worthy of classics.

Haggisfish - I can confirm that it actually does.

SadOldGit · 03/11/2014 20:02

The fart one had me sniggering last night - but nothing beats the Sinister Easter Bonnet - always cheers me up

slithytove · 03/11/2014 20:03

pete just read that single post and welled up. It's very touching.

PeteCampbellsRecedingHairline · 03/11/2014 20:24

Slithy It's one of my favourite threads. My eyes were watering when I reread it earlier.

Squtternutbaush · 03/11/2014 20:24

Okay I take it back... I have cried at a thread.

Just read Emin's thread in classics and managed to see the uplifting side right up until the announcement, then I literally took in a sharp breath and sobbed for about 5 minutes.

I also realised though that I also cried at another of her posts under a different name when it was her last day with her foster son.

Such a selfless lady.

Mintyy · 03/11/2014 20:43

I have absolutely cried over many threads on Mumsnet. You would have to have a heart of stone not to!

And I have laughed til I've cried, but rarely. The threads which have reduced me to actual tears of laughter were Ellaroo's river of sweetcorn, Morningpaper's piss-take of Netmums and Smallships' dp's stag do.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 03/11/2014 20:48

Eminent died Sad I didn't know. That's so very sad. RIP.

Mintyy · 03/11/2014 21:03

Sadly she did Lonny. She posted a thread when she knew it was inevitable asking for ideas for funeral songs. I did cry when her dd posted to say that she had passed on.

wanttosqueezeyou · 03/11/2014 21:20

Yes I often LOL and sometimes cry.

I'm quite prone to having laughter turn to tears though. Its a really fine line for me.

Never pissed myself but I do occasionally when I sneeze so its not a big stretch to imagine it could happen.

OhFFSWhatsWrongNow · 03/11/2014 21:24

I actually cried with laugher tonight at a reply on a thread in chat that doesn't have many replies. It was the first time I have done that and I don't even think it was over the top funny, but I nearly pissed myself laughing Grin

wanttosqueezeyou · 03/11/2014 21:26

Jennysense I have just LOL'd at the Enid Blyton story. Didn't see that thread.

Agree with others though that penis beaker left me cold.

LoxleyBarrett · 03/11/2014 21:31

The thing I would really like to know is anybody every says "squee" in real life - I've never found the need to "squee" at anything either real or on MN.

I would LOVE for someone to say "did you mean to be so rude?" in RL.

LoxleyBarrett · 03/11/2014 21:47

That too Notbythehaironmychinnychinchin!

Jill2015 · 03/11/2014 22:21

I've laughed, often. Sometimes at a one liner, or turn of phrase, that cracks me up, and others might not even find funny. One of the first threads I read on MN was someone asking was it okay to fart with others around, or should you politely leave the room to do so. She and her husband disagreed on this. She was the farter, as far as I remember, and her SIL was the..um...recipient, and was due around again, to stay, for Christmas, so the poster wanted to get the fartiquette right, I guess.
Someone commented along the lines of 'it must be right grim round at yours', and that just made me laugh. Grin Schoolboy humour, or whatever, but I'm addicted to MN ever since.
I don't spit coffee/ tea /wine etc on my keyboard, when I laugh, and I don't believe anyone does. If that happened to you once, surely you would ensure that you weren't drinking anything the next time you were on MN...

I've never cried, at a thread, but have read hugely moving threads, EMIN writing about the drug dependent baby, is such an amazing thread. She was truly a great person.

WilburIsSomePig · 03/11/2014 23:03

Yes I've laughed out loud and I've cried. Usually at threads where people have suffered a loss.

Frogme · 03/11/2014 23:14

Can somebody please link to the emin thread.

OP posts:
DishwasherDogs · 03/11/2014 23:38

This is the drug dependent baby thread

There is also a tribute thread started by her dd, I think that's in classics too.

springydaffs · 04/11/2014 00:08

I frequently laugh out loud - yes, on my own in a room. Most recently belly-laughed at the way some posters try to be graphic and say stuff like "there was a bit of sick in my mouth on reading that", or "A little wee came out". I mean, WTF? There are grown ups writing that sort of nonsense! on this very thread.

I cry less often but sometimes someone's story is so awful I can't help it.
