HOW many calories in home made hot-honey-and-lemon-drink?

I have a stinking cold and have been mainlining hot honey and lemon drink for my throat and for the vitamin c!

I have just looked on the honey jar and am shocked at the amount of calories.

so AIBU to continue drinking 6 cups a day, even though this will fulfil my calorie intake for the entire day?

If you are putting one teaspoon of honey in each then I doubt it.

If you're putting in several tablespoons then quite likely.

outofcontrol2014 · 24/10/2014 07:56

How much honey are you using. You only really need a tablespoon or so - about 70 calories - a couple of tablespoons of lemon juice a negligible amount, add hot water.

Even having that six times a day, you'd struggle to get more than 500 calories.

Also, remember that your body needs more calories than normal if you have a temperature. If you try to diet very strictly through a cold, it's a great way of making it last twice as long. Be gentle with yourself!

cardibach · 24/10/2014 07:57

A quick google says 22calories a teaspoon fir honey, so 6 cups = 132ish. You've hot quite a few calories left until you reach the 2000 recommended for most women...

MaudantWit · 24/10/2014 07:59

And the old adage does say "starve a fever, feed a cold".

outofcontrol2014 · 24/10/2014 08:02

It's the other way round! Starve a cold, feed a fever.

The idea being that the body starts to burn calories really fast when you raise temperature (as in a fever) so you need more intake.

It is also nonsense - a healthy amount of calories is important in getting over both!

icanhaveadarksideifyouwantmeto · 24/10/2014 08:03

my honey jar says 300 calories in a tablespoon of honey...!

OP posts:
icanhaveadarksideifyouwantmeto · 24/10/2014 08:03

and it needs a tablespoon otherwise its vile!

OP posts:
SecretSpy · 24/10/2014 08:05

there are not 300 cals in a tablespoon.

sugar is around 400 cals per 100g. so unless the tablespoon of honey weighs 75 g its impossible. is it kjoules instead?

londonrach · 24/10/2014 08:10

Forget the calories and just get yourself well. X

icanhaveadarksideifyouwantmeto · 24/10/2014 08:11

oh shit! i stand corrected......
it says 307 calories in 100 grams...
15 grams in a tablespoon.

see what the cold has done to my mathematical prowess!?!

anyone got anything else i can try.... i have a hacking cough that feels like my throat and chest is going to rip open, a sore nose, a splitting headache and i cant hear properly!

WOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooeeeeeeeeee is me! [flails on the floor having]

You're confusing kilo joules with calories! 300kj is about 70cals so you're fine.

londonrach · 24/10/2014 08:14

Buttercup syrup. It will change your life cold wise. Otherwise just keep drinking the honey and lemon. Go to bed as much as you can (ha). Hope its better soon.

londonrach · 24/10/2014 08:15

You not its and i dont even have a cold to blame

icanhaveadarksideifyouwantmeto · 24/10/2014 08:15

thank you [sob]

OP posts:
TimeForAnotherNameChange · 24/10/2014 08:15

X-posts. Google reckons about 60cals in a tablespoon of honey anyway, so you're still fine.

MaudantWit · 24/10/2014 08:16

I don't have anything else to suggest - I love honey and lemon - but I'm having an interesting time googling around "starve a fever, feed a cold" (and vice versa)!

OwlWearingSunglasses · 24/10/2014 09:03

I want a spoonful of honey now and I don't have a cold.

I always thought it was feed a cold, starve a fever, too. That sort of makes sense to me as when you've a cold you feel bleugh so find things to treat yourself with and if you've a fever you don't really want to do anything but rest and sleep. :)

JustAShopGirl · 24/10/2014 09:09

Beechams all in one - the medicine in the bottle - painkiller, decongestant, soothing for throat, reduces symptoms to a tolerable level.

londonrach · 24/10/2014 09:11

Lemsip gives me terrible ingestion so still to the amazing buttercup syrup and the homemade honey and sleep...

londonrach · 24/10/2014 09:11

Stick not still

I've had a cold for the past week have been carb mad and not eating much so if you're like me the cals in honey won't kill you.

specialsubject · 24/10/2014 10:38

so just move around a bit more when you are better. Unless you are eating honey by the handful you can work it off.

take some paracetamol (watch the dose), stay away from other people, keep warm, take in those fluids. Eat normally if you feel like it.

whathaveiforgottentoday · 24/10/2014 10:46

good link Polter. I've always thought it was irrelevant when you're ill as you're burning off more calories anyway fighting infection. Look after yourself, drink plenty and sleep as much as possible. You can go back on the diet when you feel better.
I like a hot honey and lemon drink plus parecetomol at bedtime to get me off to sleep when I have a cough/cold.
