So I was in Co-op this afternoon with dd in the buggy. It was really quiet and there were 3 tills open, no queues. I was having a nice chat with the cashier and getting £20 cash back, £10 of which I asked for in change so it took a bit longer. The adjacent till was empty with the cashier sat twiddling her thumbs.

Anyway, as I was getting my cash back I realised that the woman who had mysteriously chosen to join the same till line, despite the empty till adjacent, was massively rolling her eyes and tutting.

I caught her eye and gave a slight Hmm look, and then she started:

Her: "What the fuck are you looking at, you stupid bitch."

Me: "I'm getting cash back. What's your problem? "

Her: "You're holding up the whole queue you stupid fucking bitch. If you want change you should go to a fucking bank."

Me: "You're the only person waiting and there's an empty till right there."

And so it went on. She rolled her eyes at dd too. Fuck. You. Bitch.

As I left (after putting my purse in my bag as slooooowly as possible) I felt I had to tell her that she was an ignorant bitch. She called out "No, I called YOU a fucking bitch!"

WTAF?!?!

Sounds like she has serious 'issues' and simply to be avoided. Horrible for you but not a normal response. Surprised the cashier didn't say anything!

From your OP it sounds like you provoked a completely unnecessary argument with a stranger, complete with aggressive swearing in front of your small child.

Why respond. She has issues. Was in 99p shop and lady with pink hair was f..ing and b...ing. She wasnt connected to a phone but talking to herself. People just smiled and ignored, she must have had a bad day...

I know - dd is very very small and was asleep - but you're right. I was just so shocked. The cashier didn't say a word, just looked down.

It is a rare thing for our Co-op to have more than 1 till open!

How do you know her neighbours cousins friends pet dog hasn't lost a nail and she's very upset and tense about it? Cut the woman some slack Hmm

Lol at 3 till open Co-op! Mine never has more than one, person on it is usually really loud or really rude. It's my nearest shop but I drive further to avoid it!

OP but really, this situation really didn't need to happen. You didn't need to engage with the tutting (annoying as it was).

In the same situation I would have smiled at tutting lady and got out of the way as fast as I could, as is only polite. As far as I can see you were both behaving pretty badly.

I love Co-op but ours only has two tills and I've only ever seen one open.

Co-op Rhubarb pie is really nice.

My Ds works for the Co Op, he says it's very rare to have 3 tills open. He's only ever known it happen on Xmas Eve.

He's not rude, he can be a bit loud though.

Provoked a completely unnecessary argument littleblue? I assume you're being sarcastic? Why shouldn't the OP defend herself when being sworn at? The cashier should have said something I think. No need for that reaction and language. What a tit! YANBU.
