To think NO-ONE ever goes into Poundland and just spends a pound?

I'm not sure I'm their target market - middle aged and middle class etc, etc but there are some really useful things in there (reading glasses, tupperware, branded toothpaste and cleaning products, batteries, note-pads). I went in to buy a ball of string the other day and it cost me about £16.

Is it just me?

But OP, you've SAVED money, dontcha know?!

I never take my DC in with me because that's exactly what I end up doing too. But on my own I do have a bit more control, fortunately.

HermioneWeasley · 09/10/2014 12:40

Agree - rarely get out with change for £20 and never less than £10!

Angelto5 · 09/10/2014 12:41

I do this all the time in many other shops.
Only go in for a few things like milk or bread & then see the offersShockHmmConfused

FloatingPorpoise · 09/10/2014 12:41

Yackity I think we may have to move house to accommodate all the string, batteries, cleaning products and note-pads. I think it's about £45K to move house, so that's £45,016 for a few bits and pieces!

Bargain!!!! Wink

mamato3luvleys · 09/10/2014 12:43

Yes have been a pound land victim also and then kicked myself when in asda and see the same products for like 89p or something !!

SirChenjin · 09/10/2014 12:47

Nope, it's not just you - it's like an Aladdin's Cave in there. Our local one is currently stocking Horrid Henry books - bargainous.

Not sure they have a particular target market though, do they? It's a very mixed bag in ours Confused

BauerTime · 09/10/2014 12:47

I always round up to the nearest 5 if im in a pound shop, so if I want one thing, I spend a fiver, if I want 7, ill spend a tenner etc.

I try to stick to things that I know I will buy somewhere else but I know they are cheaper in poundland rather than get sucked in, so I know im saving in the long run and hopefully wont need to go in there again for a while. But yes, it is impossible to come out only having spent a pound.

JustAShopGirl · 09/10/2014 12:51

Nope - not impossible - if it is the shop beside your bus stop, and they sell your DD's favourite but rationed breakfast bar at half the price of ASDA.

Littledidsheknow · 09/10/2014 12:52

Got some fabulous 'Finish' dishwasher detergent gel there the other day. You pour it into the little compartment instead of using tablet. The bottle should do about 40 washes... For a pound, not £15!!
Shame it cost me an extra £20 in unnecessary chilli sauce, nail varnish wild bird food and screwdriver sets though, mind.

pluCaChange · 09/10/2014 12:52

I dunno. I've walked out having spent nothing, so it is possible. All I have to do it picture something on the floor and I don't buy it. Simple!

olivesnutsandcheese · 09/10/2014 12:53

l always buy pork scratchings (low- carbing) for me and pom-bears for DS and edge very carefully away from everything else Grin

marne2 · 09/10/2014 12:56

I hate going in poundland, it's not worth going in to spend a pound as you know you will have to queue for half an hour to pay for it, if I do venture in there ( usually because dh wants to have a look ) I have to spend at leas £5.

futterwacken · 09/10/2014 12:56

I used to be able to spend one lonely pound but ours now has a HUGE craft aisle and I keep buying stacks of stuff for me my toddler

YourMaNoBraBackOfMyCar · 09/10/2014 12:57

I have a list of items I always buy without fail. Deodorants, toothbrushes, hair bobbles/clips, pens, plasters, cif, dishwasher tabs, lighters with a torch on the end, body pouffe, straws, Capri suns, Turners chocolate mis-shapes, and a cloth facial mask which is brilliant. I also give the kids a quid each and let them buy whatever they want. Ds usually gets sweets, dd1 some stationery and dd2 a crappy toy.

juneybean · 09/10/2014 12:57

Ohh I managed to spend only a pound the other day. The key is to not pick up a basket, keep your eye on the ball and don't get distracted by ...OOH HALLOWEEN THINGS!

Thurlow · 09/10/2014 13:02

Ditto. Popped in the other day with the express plan of merely buying a) a big Toblerone and b) maybe some new bibs.

I had a sulk because they have stopped stocking long-sleeved towelling bibs Angry

Then I picked up two lots of batteries, washing up gloves, a spare hair brush, lighters, and a toy for the toddler.

It's like going into Boots. You can't just buy one thing.

YourMaNoBraBackOfMyCar · 09/10/2014 13:07

I stopped buying batteries even Duracell ones after reading an article that said poundshop batteries compared to supermarket ones were different and weaker. I thought all batteries were created equal.

dannydyerismydad · 09/10/2014 13:09

I go in there only to mourn the passing of the z list celebs who are retailing their memoirs for £1, but always leave with birthday cards, sticker books, cleaning cloths...

slalomsuki · 09/10/2014 13:12

Reading glasses are great from poundshops assuming you have a standard prescription. I must have about 5 pairs dotted around and it doesn't matter if they get scratched.

Don't buy much else though unless it's hair products and some cleaners.

Pistone · 09/10/2014 13:13

I don't think their idea is for you to just spend one pound, the ideas to expect you to buy lots of one pound items. There are bargains to be had but you have to be careful with some products which are smaller than the normal size, also things they sell 3 for a pound, you can often get cheaper in tesco.

ouryve · 09/10/2014 13:14

DS1 does.

WipsGlitter · 09/10/2014 13:16

I love going in. Makes me feel rich!

MetalLaLa · 09/10/2014 13:18

My trick is to go to Home Bargains first that's on the same retail park as they normally undercut on the same stuff by a penny and I feel like I've justified the saving Grin I do find I rarely go in with cash to the poundshop I have to spend the minimum £5 for card payments which defeats the object of my plan really!

yasminfleece · 09/10/2014 13:23

Used to spend loads in there but it's easier not to spend when dc get older. DS isn't interested in the plastic tat any more but I go in to see what cheap cosmetics they have and to stock up on cleaning items. But they opened one near to me so I don't need to buy as much in one go now.
