To think NO-ONE ever goes into Poundland and just spends a pound?

I'm not sure I'm their target market - middle aged and middle class etc, etc but there are some really useful things in there (reading glasses, tupperware, branded toothpaste and cleaning products, batteries, note-pads). I went in to buy a ball of string the other day and it cost me about £16.

Is it just me?

Many a time I go in tesco or asda just to buy some bread and end up spending £20 or £30. It's the way they tempt you with stuff you don't really need but think you do.

AnyoneForTARDIS · 09/10/2014 18:39

the mJane Asher kitchen stuff!

the books-horrible histories and the like- and 2015 annuals!

toilet and kitchen paper

toothpaste

multibag crisps.

toblrone bar (my current fave!)

cappuccino sachets.

teabags.

and yes, the bloody CRAFT aisle! sucked in to the max with that!

alltoomuchrightnow · 09/10/2014 18:50

hmm. I used to go and get stuff for £1 if it was just, say, milk for work. And I'd have to get a receipt too to claim it back!
The most I've spent has been about £45.
I remember a few years ago doing training in Petersfield and it was the best one I'd ever been to. They were selling the full sized John Frieda conditioners and I bought tons. I remember staggering on the train each day with my swag... I bought a bagful each day (sometimes more)! Still got some left I think !

alltoomuchrightnow · 09/10/2014 18:51

i mean, in one go, £45.
Obviously over the years I've spent far far more than that! whole life bought in Poundland even long stripy socks Blush

alltoomuchrightnow · 09/10/2014 18:52

Loved the one in Epsom too...two floors! Moved away and not one near me now

Nomama · 09/10/2014 18:56

Yep. Cos I only go in if I have forgotten my shopping glasses.

I usually find their smaller bottles, nasty batteries put me off, there is a Wilko's opposite ours and a Range just down the road... so there is little point in either of the pound shops!

jeee · 09/10/2014 18:56

I spent £27 in Poundland today

alltoomuchrightnow · 09/10/2014 19:00

a lot of the cleaning stuff is cheaper elsewhere , so that annoys me, e.g. rubber gloves, scourers etc .

LaurieFairyCake · 09/10/2014 19:00

I have never managed to spend less than 15 in Poundland or less than 50 in Ikea

morningtoncrescent62 · 09/10/2014 19:08

I went in this afternoon, bought a bag of Skittles, and came out again. I had a sudden craving for Skittles ( opal fruits Starburst without the need for all that pesky individual unwrapping). The bag's empty now.

WitchWay · 09/10/2014 19:11

It amuses me to take the odd item up to the counter & ask how much it costs

Grin
AnyoneForTARDIS · 09/10/2014 19:40

if you know what stuffs cheaper in other shops you can avoid certain things.

but sometimes id rather get things from there than then trudge to another shop just cos its 20p cheaper.

I suppose it balances out somehow.

yy the candles. and the diy stuff.

TraceyTrickster · 10/10/2014 07:03

I miss Poundland (being in ManyDollarsForAnything land). When we were back on holiday we spent a very restrained 50quid...twas a struggle to squish it all in the suitcase.

Mint Clubs- yummmm- here they are the equivalent of about 4 pounds.

BauerTime · 10/10/2014 07:59

I'm just catching up on this thread with anticipation of a pound shop visit today. I need nappy bags which is why ill go in, but in ours you get 6 kitchen rolls for a quid so always pick some of those up as the MIL is kitchen roll obsessed and uses a whole roll on the days she minds DS each week. I also need a new bottle of stardrops and I usually pick up our crisps in there too. God I'm excited! Do you think they have the Xmas stuff in yet?

Mrsjayy · 10/10/2014 08:59

Im going today for deodorant they do right guard so I buy 3 then I will see the face wipesvand think ooo handy and on and on it goes

BrandyAlexander · 10/10/2014 09:23

Poundland is the only shop where they tot up and I look at my pile of goodies and think "is that it?" Or "damn! I only came in for one thing!". It's very more-ish!

Purplepixiedust · 10/10/2014 09:29

I do very occasionally pop in for milk and just buy the one! Usually like yesterday I went in to look for something they didn't even have and still soent a tenner!

Purplepixiedust · 10/10/2014 09:30

Spent

Mrsjayy · 10/10/2014 09:38

Oh they sometimes do chocolate limes I am going to look for them today

CalamitouslyWrong · 10/10/2014 09:44

The only times I can remember ever being in poundland I've only spent £1. I just don't look at anything other than what I specifically went in for.

bruffin · 10/10/2014 09:44

I dont think pound shops are good value
Usually low quality
And you are usually paying more pound for pound ie smaller bottles and packets

futterwacken · 10/10/2014 10:52

Yes they have christmas stuff in! I’ve bought some ribbons and stuff, although got 36m of paper for £4 in Wilko

SirChenjin · 10/10/2014 15:07

Depends what you're buying bruffin - plenty of branded products at full size in there
