To think NO-ONE ever goes into Poundland and just spends a pound?

I'm not sure I'm their target market - middle aged and middle class etc, etc but there are some really useful things in there (reading glasses, tupperware, branded toothpaste and cleaning products, batteries, note-pads). I went in to buy a ball of string the other day and it cost me about £16.

Is it just me?

If anyone has a Lloyds chemist near by they have a 6 items for a fiver section that has toiletries, wipes, talc, toothbrushes, hand wash, toothpaste and mouthwash. It's all branded stuff too not fake stealth branding like Wasoline and Divea. :o

AuntieStella · 09/10/2014 13:38

I've spent just £1 once - it had started raining and they had brollies.

Usually I end up spending about £10-15, usually including hair clips etc for DD who seems tohave her own personal black hole for making them vanish.

Mammanat222 · 09/10/2014 13:41

I rarely carry cash (like the Queen!! Smile) so I never spend less than a fiver as that is the minimum card spend.

I go once a month - I loathe it - to stock up on the stuff I do find worthwhile.

HelpMeGetOutOfHere · 09/10/2014 13:46

Theres a big one on a shopping estate not too far from me and I always end up buying things I don't need or want.

Earphones- they break so easily. Brought ds2 a few pairs as always losing or breaking them and all broken within a week!

Cleaning stuff- then finding its no good, or on offer elsewhere, smaller pack etc. Worst was the tablets you put in the loo, bleach ones. They stained the loo bright blue!! Took ages to scrub it off and had to buy a loo brush and soak it in normal thick bleach.

Sweetpea01 · 09/10/2014 13:48

I like it for cheap decorations for Halloween etc!

RalphGnu · 09/10/2014 13:48

I nipped in today for some printer paper and came out with printer paper, a plastic sieve, some sports bottles, a Roysters T-Bone steak multipack, chicken soup, conditioner, chocolate biscuits, hair bobbles, a light saber, photo frame, tea lights, tea towels, a bucket, a clothes airing rail, Domestos, plastic wallets, a sewing kit, pistachios, cashews and a Cadbury's chocolate orange. Blush

Mrsjayy · 09/10/2014 13:52

Tenner shop I call it that is how they lure you in you pop in for bleach and come out with 3 bags full Blush

BringMeTea · 09/10/2014 13:56

I love all pound shops. I live in a very expensive place overseas. When I am in the UK I am gleeful. Toothbrushes, antihistamines, sweeties! What's not to like?

BadLad · 09/10/2014 14:55

I stopped buying batteries even Duracell ones after reading an article that said poundshop batteries compared to supermarket ones were different and weaker. I thought all batteries were created equal.

This is probably the funniest post I've seen on mumsnet.

mausmaus · 09/10/2014 14:58

I managed it once.
but only because I only had the shopping trolly coin....

Trickydecision · 09/10/2014 14:58

Agreed, impossible to spend £1, I go there for their face wipes, two packs for £1 and excellent, but always prowl around in search of exciting extras. Lidl is as bad, went in this morning primarily for milk, spent £121, and have never set foot in Ikea and spent less than £200, despite only wanting a table lamp or similar.

All unmissable bargains representing genuine savings. Hmm

DidoTheDodo · 09/10/2014 15:01

Toblerone. You can always top up with Toblerone.

SixPeaches · 09/10/2014 15:20

I went in to buy parcel tape this morning. Spent £19 and didn't buy parcel tape...

LOL. Smile

TheLovelyBoots · 09/10/2014 15:25

IMO, Savers is cheaper than Poundland for a lot of household stuff & toiletries.

Mrsjayy · 09/10/2014 16:00

I only spent a pound the other day I bought 5 toothbrushes I think I was so gleeful aboug 5 for a 1 I didn't spend anything else and told the woman at the bus stop

StrangeGlue · 09/10/2014 16:23

And now they've started doing decent craft stuff - as if I wasn't spending enough in there!

EvilRingahBitch · 09/10/2014 16:26

Queue is always so horrible in ours that I'd never go in for just one thing, I always have to make it worth my while. The loaf/cake tin liners are always useful.

DrSeuss · 09/10/2014 16:36

The rot set in for me when they started taking cards. When you had to have the cash, you couldn't just chuck stuff in the basket.

Pistone · 09/10/2014 16:38

Just because it's called pound land it doesn't mean it expects it's customers to just spend a pound though.Confused

Babayaggatheboneylegged · 09/10/2014 16:44

I read something once (think it was from a psychologist or business 'expert') who said that when you are in a pound shop the surprise and novelty actually create the illusion that you need the product.

Apparently there's also something to do with EVERYTHING being so cheap that makes us go ga-ga. Bigger supermarkets have experimented with aisles of £1 stuff, but because it's in a wider context of being in a store with much higher value items, it's not as effective.

I find the psychology of shopping fascinating.

fatlazymummy · 09/10/2014 16:56

Today I didn't spend anything in there, because they didn't have the thing I wanted. Last time I spent £1 (well 99p, cos it's a 99p shop) on two cans of cherry coke.
TBH I'm spending less and less in there now. I find supermarkets better value, and I don't buy tat. I really don't like buying things just for the sake of it, so I suppose pound shops aren't really for me.

Mrsjayy · 09/10/2014 17:00

I got dd baking stuff there last Christmas was pink stuff she was delighted

fatlazymummy · 09/10/2014 17:14

I agree the batteries are crap. They definitely don't hold as much charge as the standard Duracell ones. I always get the 'replace your batteries' message when I use them in my remote, even when I've just replaced them. There again, they are only 10p per battery, so can't really complain.

poolomoomon · 09/10/2014 17:38

This is precisely how they make their money. "Ooh but those are really expensive usually, let's buy a few of those while we're here." Grin. I remember the first time I found out they stocked kallo rice cakes, I went mental and bought about 25 packs because they're almost twice the price in ocado!

I went in yesterday to look at their Halloween stock and it's surprisingly very very good this year, some of it's quite fancy looking in fact. I came away with ten pounds worth.
