DH looked for the plate last night as well, couldn't find it.
They ditched the crew - the presenters got the first flight out to Buenos Aires (sp?) and left the crew behind.
I used to love TG, the early ones are hilarious but now it's got nothing to do with cars and everything to so with the egos of the presenters.

(I actually owned cars with Hs at either end of the plate - first one was a Mark II cortina, second one a Rover)

Highway - 1982, Falklands War with Argentina. H982 - shows enough of the year to be significant; FKL could be read as shorthand for Falklands if you're of a mind to do so.

But they'd swapped the number plate before they got to Argentina - they'd been told in Chile to change it (article in Sunday Times yesterday).

for those of you who don't get it - it is to do with the Falkland's conflict, 1982. It was a territorial war between Argentina and The UK for a set of islands off the coast of Argentina in 1982. Similarly offensive in the way that the USA flag monkey bike was in their Vietnam "special".

To be honest I've gone right off them since the "slope" incident. Then Clarkson being caught on film saying the "n" word. He thinks he's so clever that he can get away with it and say its all a misunderstanding, a coincidence, etc.

The plate is genuine and has been on that car for years but I still doubt it wasn't considered when they took the car over there.

And some journalist doing a bit of digging should easily be able to find out what the plate of the car was when they bought it. So if they're lying I hope its proved without doubt that they are.

I wouldn't believe a word Clarkson says. He denied using the "n" word until someone published the film.

Looking on Twitter he's getting much more crap thrown at him than May and Hammond. In fact Hammond is getting some quite supportive tweets.

It started when they almost got themselves shot in America, since then they've been out to make the most "hilarious gaffes" except they don't seem to understand that they don't actually own the whole world.

But even in the film he can be seen to mumble the n-word - probably because he suddenly realised as he was saying it that it was completely wrong to use it but couldn't think on his feet of a word to change it.

I was taught eeny-meeny-miny-mo with the n-word in it back in the 70s too. I wouldn't use it now; I don't know what the accepted PC version is, but if I wanted to use it I'd have to think of a useful 2 syllable word to use in the n-word's place.

I struggle to believe a number plate with some purported Falklands reference would provoke such a cartoon-strip reaction in a place difficult to verify the details.

I might be persuaded if the number plate referred to the Malvinas, since Argentinians are fiercely attached to them, to the point they really don't like using the word "Falklands" at all.

So entirely staged "controversy" IMHO.
