to be fuming with SIL?

Last year we (DH's extended family) tried to get together and have a family picture taken. We could never work it out due to scheduling, so this year we started working on it in August.

A photographer in our town runs a special through today, a really good deal where she takes group photos in a local park, which is nice because the trees are all in full autumn colors.

We (DH's sister) and I find a date that works for everyone. SIL#2 (married to DH's brother) was a bit cat's bum mouth at it being outside but agreed. SIL1 and I said thataybe everyone should wear brown, white, and blue in any shade or pattern as it would coordinate, plus everyone has jeans, khakis l, etc. Everyone agrees.

There is MIL and FIL, DH and me and 2 DCs, SIL1 and husband, SIL2 and her husband (DH's brother), and their 2 DCs, and SIL3 (DH's other sister) her husband, and DD.

So we get this all arranged, send out emails with dates and times, etc. It's all settled.

On Thursday we get a snippy email from SIL2. "What day is pictures? Where are we meeting? What are we wearing again?" despite this being communicated several times. SIL1 replied with directions and a map and again said brown, blue, and white.

So this morning dawns bright and early. We get ready and go to the park, where evertone except SIL2 and BIL are wearing various casual clothing in (you guessed it, brown, blue, and white.)

BIL is wearing a black shirt. SIL2 is wearing a black long sleeved T-shirt with Harley Davidson in red letters. The two DC (9 and 7) are wearing teal and black Under Armour hooded sweatshirts.

I've seen an advanced proof of the pic and it looks ridiculous. It looks like they just wandered in to some random family's photo.

Also we broker into separate family units for pictures and they refused saying "oh we got one for the church directory, it's good enough."

I think it's completely passive aggressive of them and if they didn't want to be in it, they should have just said so.

AIBU to be upset?

I can see its annoying though.

WineWineWine · 04/10/2014 21:04

I cannot bear the coordinated clothing family photos.
Maybe if you had all just worn a free choice of clothing, it would have looked more real.

CheerfulYank · 04/10/2014 21:04

Thanks Cocole :)

Yes, Mome, she does have form. Sigh.

I promise, it wasn't a "uniform"! I was wearing jeans, a brown top, and a white cardigan. Blue scarf. DH and DS were wearing khakis and (non matching) blue shirts. DD was wearing leggings under a white sweater dress and a little jean jacket.

SIL1 is really funky and cool style wise and she had on a (brown) leather jacket and looked great. Other BILs were wearing brown or white or whatever.

Pom that's true. It's just that all communication was done through her as she said she would tell BIL (her husband) what he had to wear.

If it were that (that she said "you sort it!") I'd have been behind her 100%. He is an arse and she's very much the "little woman". He'd have worn whatever she said, though, as she " handles" that sort of thing.

CheerfulYank, having now stalked your pictures in the hope the family shot was on there, can you please confirm that a) that is your pet, and b) that you have indeed named him after Tom Hank's dog in the fabulous You've Got Mail?

CheerfulYank · 04/10/2014 21:11

Mome it wasn't on purpose but he is over the moon! :o

Scholes I am the least organized person in the world, I swear.

All they had to do was show up and wear clothing in colors I know they own.

WD41 does that mean you don't want to be adopted by us? :( :o

CheerfulYank · 04/10/2014 21:11

TheCraic Yes and hell yes! :o

Should I put up the proof??

OP posts:
JapaneseMargaret · 04/10/2014 21:12

So she asked you what you were all suppose to be wearing just days before the shot, and then big, fat went ahead and ignored you?!

YANBU!

CheerfulYank · 04/10/2014 21:15

Thank you Stratters! :)

Yup, JapaneseMargaret. Why. Didn't. She. Just. Say. Nooooooo?!

I should have paid more attention to your username when I read your OP. At first I thought you were weird, then I thought American. As a cynical brit I'm obliged to say YABU! Grin

MissBlennerhasset · 04/10/2014 21:16

I demand (in the nicest possible way) to see the pic!

EveDallasRetd · 04/10/2014 21:17

They look like a couple of goths that have crashed a family photo Grin

We had a fab 'family' photo done a couple of years ago. 'Family' because it was actually all the owners of caravans at our site (about 40 people all told). We were all wearing combinations of red white and blue because we had a 'Royal Wedding' Barbeque. It was arranged because the elderly site owner had died a year before and his son (who took on the site) wanted a photo for his mum.

It's a great photo, really cheerful happy and 'coordinated'. Not naff at all.

Pooka · 04/10/2014 21:19

PUT UP THE PROOF! Grin

LIZS · 04/10/2014 21:20

yanbu It's done now and the colours don't sound too far off the mark if irritating. Presumably you'd only buy your family group shot anyway.

CheerfulYank · 04/10/2014 21:20

I can't figure out how on the mobile site! :(

Hahaha Eve!

I love them but (and this might sound ironic to everyone who thinks I'm being controlling) they are such hard work.

OP posts:
CheerfulYank · 04/10/2014 21:21

Liz I was hoping to buy the group shot, actually. :)

JuniDD · 04/10/2014 21:22

This sounds like that episode of Modern Family but with less mud. Grin. YANBU.

LIZS · 04/10/2014 21:22

Of just the 4 of them ? Why ?

CheerfulYank · 04/10/2014 21:23

Oh, no, Liz. I mean the group together. We have one of all 15 of us.

OP posts:
Fizzyplonk · 04/10/2014 21:28

YANBU
She knew before the photo what was planned and should have said then if she planned to deviate from the group arrangement.
This wasn't about her and sometimes, (like at work or weddings), you have to put personal style preferences to one side.
I'd be pissed off that

  1. I'd wasted money on the shoot
  2. Mil less likely to want to display photo
  3. It would be awkward to rearrange

They have acted like stroppy teenagers, did she stick her tongue out or flick vs too?

californiaburrito · 04/10/2014 21:28

OP I totally get you. I've got some amazing pastel family photos from the 80's.

But I thought you might get a giggle out of this story-

Some years ago my cousin married into a large Italian American family, olive skin, dark hair. They had a very elegant ceremony in late September on the east coast. The wedding colors were very autumnal and I remember the MOB wearing a beautiful copper colored gown. So imagine my shock flicking through the wedding photos to see the FULL family photos- including the FOB's new wife. Wearing a skin tight turquoise tube dress that barely covered her bum. Classy, it was.

TeWiSavesTheDay · 04/10/2014 21:30

I want to see!

They sound petty. They had plenty of opportunity to ask to include black but didn't.

I really want a family photo shoot outside - I've seen a few people doing them recently, I love the colours you can get.

GnomeDePlume · 04/10/2014 21:32

YANBU, we did a family photo many years ago and it really does help that we are all similarly dressed.

What on earth were they hoping to achieve by this? Were they looking to spoil the photo or were they looking to make themselves the centre of attention?

This sort of behaviour reminds me of a certain former UK prime minister who decided to wear a brightly coloured suit for a world leader group photo when the dress instruction had been dark & muted. All to do with stealing attention.

CheerfulYank · 04/10/2014 21:34

I can't figure out how to post it! Arghhh. I was going to put it in my profile.

Wow California, sounds...nice... :o
