AIBU to ask your thoughts on what to give for the christening of a godchild? Especially on an unreasonable modest budget. I'm very creative so AIBU to make something or do parents expect the usual silver bracelets etc?

I got my friend's little boy a Royal Mint set of coins from his year of birth:

Yes a beautiful painting of your godchild, that would be fantastic.

Lifestooshorttosleep · 04/10/2014 20:18

If you're good with a camera, take some really nice photos of the christening and put them into a scrapbook or memory book afterwards. Black and white shots can look particularly nice and different

Gave bible to my god daughter. Bil gave a light up trunk which was great fun in the day (for the adults) As a child myself i was given a silver bracelet and a pottery peter rabbit china set. X amount if money into childs account...

londonrach · 04/10/2014 20:22

Nursery rhyme book also given to me and i still treasure as an adult. Lots of good pictures...

as a professional artist I'm sure the parents are expecting a lovely handmade gift Wink
If you can do it, then go for it.
I have several godchildren but have given them all different things - but no silver or engraved things

hels71 · 04/10/2014 20:28

I bought my godson the complete AA Milne in a nice hardback edition..

EATmum · 04/10/2014 23:20

That sounds lovely OP. Fab idea, and really original.

grovel · 04/10/2014 23:38

Slightly off topic.

My (late and lovely) MiL and FiL had 20 godchildren between them. They married in their mid 30's, were both solvent (pre-marriage!) and loved children. That seems to have made them good godparent material.

They ended up sending 20 birthday presents on MiL's birthday because they could not deal with remembering nearly 2 a month. The godchildren loved this eccentricity.

mymummademelistentoshitmusic · 05/10/2014 00:15

I love that idea, grovel. Smile

Ok, I've nearly finished the christening gift; really pleased so far so worth the late nights! I have another question; should I paint the baby's full name and her date of birth or would just her shortened first name by itself be ok? Or should I put the christening date on it? What would you put on something if you were getting it engraved for example? I'd like it to last a long time rather than look outdated with dates maybe? Thanks!

Full first name, and then on the back, "To "complete-full-name", who was born on date of birth, on the day of her Christening "date-of- Christening" from XY with love"
?

musicalendorphins2 · 07/10/2014 05:35

Would love to see a pic (if not a highly guarded secret!)

umbongoumbongo · 07/10/2014 09:15

Thanks Musical; that sounds nice and won't mess up the front with too much text! I will take a photo once it's been given to her this weekend and upload here if I can work out how!

I named a star after mine.

dustybinlydia · 13/10/2014 11:30

That is beautiful, op.

RiverTam · 13/10/2014 11:34

I have just bought a copy of When We Were Very Young (A.A. Milne) as a christening present (which is one of the things DD got).

DuelingFanjo · 13/10/2014 11:34

that's lovely. Where did you get the little drawers from?

YackityYakYak · 13/10/2014 11:36

Oh that's gorgeous! Well done.

Very lucky Godchild!!!

umbongoumbongo · 13/10/2014 12:59

The drawers were a Christmas advent calendar from Hobbycraft then I cut the ply back board to shape/size. It took forever to paint the base coat especially on the white boxes and I used a technique similar to gold leafing on the edge trim that took a long time to apply but I think it goes nicely with the white/bronze and mint theme. Defo a labour of love though!

Wow that's lovely OP.

I got my god daughter an angel teddy. It's sits in her bedroom and watches over her while i'm not there (not in a creepy way, in a loving way).

countrybump · 13/10/2014 13:08

I gave my god child a key to my house, on a key ring with a little angel on it. I was trying to find a symbolic way of saying that they will always be welcome in my home. And that my home will be a shelter to them if they need somewhere to go.
