To think pre-paid benefits cards are a stigmatizing, punitive scheme?

Just announced at the Conservative Party conference.

They will initially be 'voluntary' for claimants with addiction issues, apparently.

But of course the intention is to roll it out.

Universal Credit is going national in February so this could get interesting, given that UC will be paid to working claimants as well as those not working.

Arsenic, do you think the petition should be posted on it's own thread?

Why can't the government pay the private landlords directly? Why does it have to go to the claimants first? This would cut down on unpaid rent and subsequent squatting.

ArsenicFaceCream · 01/10/2014 15:34

Good idea Luis, do you want to do the honours?

Not commented on this thread as I have nothing to add. I agree with all of you who object.

Petition signed!

... Because if they pay rent direct to landlords they will never get a tenancy. Now you can choose whether your landlord finds out how you earn your money. Lls hate it because it makes it harder to discriminate. Most don't want benefit tenants.

It also probably goes against some kind of privacy laws but that's a guess.

signed.

If we want to talk about housing benefit, the easiest way to save the treasury money would be a rent cap on the landflords, not the tenants. There are many responsible landlords out there, but there's also some real profiteers, who are getting rich at our expense for very little return.
