Women are using it about themselves!

WTF is going on?

OraProNobis · 28/09/2014 15:18

Hideous. I do not understand women using this - at all. Was it a Beyoncé thing?

Nomama · 28/09/2014 15:18

Huh? Am I time warped??

Philoslothy · 28/09/2014 15:20

I have never ever heard anybody say this apart from Beyoncé and to be fair she was singing not talking

GarlicSeptimus · 28/09/2014 15:20

YANBU. It's a line from a song - think it's an old one but, yes, Beyonce (?) did it a few years ago.

It's not as bad as "Don't milk the cow if you won't feed it" Grin

pineapplecrush · 28/09/2014 15:21

Makes me cringe. First time I heard this expression was the Beyonce song. Not heard it used in real life until today.

ArsenicFaceCream · 28/09/2014 15:21

I've read three threads this week, plus a 'news' story about a twitter 'hint' possibly sidebar of shame, i'm admitting nothing in which women have used this phrase in relation to their partner's failure to propose

I assume Beyonce popularised it Ora but sheesh.

Even the aspect of calling yourself 'it' makes my teeth clench.

orangetart · 28/09/2014 15:22

I agree. Though probably for different reasons. It makes me think of fingers up bums. I am dirty minded though.

JumpRope · 28/09/2014 15:22

"Why would he go out for hamburger when he has steak right here" points to self

ArsenicFaceCream · 28/09/2014 15:22

orange! Hmm Confused Grin

OP posts:
Thumbwitch · 28/09/2014 15:22

Yes I hated it! Still do! It was the "it" aspect that really pissed me off, and I had to actually explain that to DH because he couldn't see why I was so het up.

Pisses me off more that the tune is so catchy. Bit like that sodding Blurred Lines song - I love that tune, but the words, oh the words! And the video Angry

CatsCantTwerk · 28/09/2014 15:25

But if You watch the video she is not calling herself 'it' she is dancing and pointing to her finger whilst singing 'it'.

tbh I have never heard that line anywhere other than from the song.

ArsenicFaceCream · 28/09/2014 15:25

Hmm. "If you like me, you should put a ring on me".

Still irritatingly passive.

Why not bloody propose? Or, you know, have an adult conversation about plans and expectations?

OP posts:
picnicbasketcase · 28/09/2014 15:26

'Why buy the cow when you get the sex for free'

ArsenicFaceCream · 28/09/2014 15:27

So it's if you like my hand you should put a ring on it Cats? Seems unlikely Hmm

Maybe the choreography was dreamt up to tone down the lyric?

OP posts:
WhoDaresWins · 28/09/2014 15:28

basketcase LOL I think it's why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free Grin

Nomama · 28/09/2014 15:28

It's from Single Ladies (2007ish) and out of context like that it isn't good. But in context, it is perfectly reasonable..

We're out clubbing and some other bloke is looking at me. Well dearest, put your wig back on. You don't own me. If you wanted exclusivity you should have proposed, made our arrangement monogamous. Well, dearest, don't get jealous, stop buying expensive gifts, I don't want them, I really only wanted you to treat me like you loved me! It's not too late, just pull me into your arms, into your heart - if you can't it's over. Too late. By bye!

ArsenicFaceCream · 28/09/2014 15:29

picnic that sounds dodgy Grin

OP posts:
CatsCantTwerk · 28/09/2014 15:30

Nomama Exactly!

ilovechristmas1 · 28/09/2014 15:31

i really cant get worked up about it

thought it was a catchy tune myself

picnicbasketcase · 28/09/2014 15:31

Yes it should be milk, it's a quote from a Kevin Smith film GrinGrin

ArsenicFaceCream · 28/09/2014 15:31

It's out of context use that's making me feel ill Nomama. I suppose it's supposed to sound sassy. It really doesn't though. It sounds awful.

OP posts:
Nomama · 28/09/2014 15:36

Well, it might just be how you hear it.

Beyoncé (or Sasha Fierce) is acknowledged to write strong female songs, lots of young women respond to those lyrics in the way she intended.

We old fogies have to get with the times, or be told we are BU when we don't quite get it!

ArsenicFaceCream · 28/09/2014 15:42

Still doesn't explain the 'it' thing Nomama.

And I was still (i think) hanging onto my twenties by my fingernails when it charted so I don't think I am suffering from a generational gap in understanding.

The fact that they are supposed to be strong songs of female empowerment makes it more insidious Sad

OP posts:
ArsenicFaceCream · 28/09/2014 15:45

But while it was just songs, fine it's songs. They're catchy, it's just pop .

Reading a thread where someone is constructing a perfectly good argument re giving their baby their surname and then suddenly says 'besides if he wants it he should put a ring on it'. Sorry, I just find that depressing from 21st century women.

hmmm i have thought about this

the only way i can see my children buying (i have 3) is if i sell the family home 240k and me and the children buy a large house and convert in to 2/3 flats

i would put the 240k (im mortgage free) down and then they would get a mortgage between them them for the rest of the purchase and convertion,i would then have my own little flat with them having the rest and paying the mortgage between them

thus we all have a home,i will have down sized and helped them financially at the same time

probably will never happen but thats my logic on the situation
