AIBU and very stupid to say this isn't junk /convenience food?

Right am really exposing myself for a potential flaming here but anyway...

Am making a sausage casserole today with the following ingredients:

Butcher sausages
2 peppers
Tomatoes
Mushrooms
Onions
Tin chopped tomatoes
Fusilli pasta

And now for the Blush bit a JAR of Lloyd Grossman tomato sauce

It's a made up recipe a la dotty so please forgive me if that's not what a sausage casserole is supposed to be like!

Anyway SIL was her earlier and says she wouldn't feed that to her 3 year old as it's junk food.

I'm mortified

I thought it was quite nutritious.

I've a very fussy 20 month old who loves sausages.

AIBU and deluded to serve this up and think it's not junk food?

She has a weird idea of what constitutes junk food

Set an extra place, I'm on my way Grin

Dinesaur · 27/09/2014 14:17

It's not junk food, but when did sausage casserole have fusilli in it? Sausage casserole is supposed to be served with lots and lots of mash!

Jars and packet mixed aren't the devils work.

BoiledPiss · 27/09/2014 14:18

I wouldn't say it's junk food, although i would probably chuck a tin of tomatoes in rather than the LG sauce, mainly because it's cheaper though.

I wish my DS's would eat something like that but if it deviates from cheese, bread, yoghurt, fruit... It's a no go :(

BrianButterfield · 27/09/2014 14:19

Of course it's not junk food, why ask? (Although I wouldn't put the jar of sauce in simply because you already have tomatoes, onion etc in. I'd save it for a quick pasta dinner in the week).

CarpeJugulum · 27/09/2014 14:19

I can't see the issue.

To me, junk food is stuff like Greggs Sausage Rolls, McD's etc. A jar of brand supermarket pasta sauce isn't.

Okay, maybe it's not as healthy as if you made your own, but it's not awful either.

CarpeJugulum · 27/09/2014 14:19

P.S. What's the recipe?

Fairylea · 27/09/2014 14:19

Sounds like you don't need the jar to be honest :) if you added some paprika and garlic and tomato puree it would probably be fine.

Definitely not junk food. Your sil is being weird!

Nanny0gg · 27/09/2014 14:19

Ignore.

It's absolutely fine (though I agree with the other two posters' points!)

SpottyTeacakes · 27/09/2014 14:20

I agree I'd Save the jar for another night. Otherwise sounds delicious Smile

Caboodle · 27/09/2014 14:20

Ignore Sil. Sounds fine. What a shame she didn't take the time to say something nice.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 27/09/2014 14:22

It isn't junk food, but you could easily leave out the jar of sauce and just use black pepper and a chicken stock cube to give a bit more depth of flavour. Those jars are expensive for what they are I think.

Which part is the SIL objecting to, the sausages?

dottytablecloth · 27/09/2014 14:22

I think it's the jar that's the issue. Obviously the jar means it's not all fresh ingredients.

I've tried adding my own tomato sauce to things but it's tastes disgusting and nobody will eat it.

insancerre · 27/09/2014 14:22

You don't need the jar. Just add some tomato puree, some garlic paste or chopped garlic and some herbs and some stock

ConcreteElephant · 27/09/2014 14:23

It's not junk food at all but you really don't need the jar.

Gileswithachainsaw · 27/09/2014 14:24

She's very precious. Nothing wrong with the odd jar of sauce. It's hardly deep fried Mars bars is it

Sassyb0703 · 27/09/2014 14:25

your sil probably has pale sickly kids who have 'allergies' to every thing and will only eat organic nectar spun by fairies if she thinks that's junk ! I was bought up on a steady diet of findus crispy pancakes..now we're talkingGrin she's a fruit loop who's read to many parenting bibles . hope lo enjoys his casserole.Wink

Heels99 · 27/09/2014 14:25

Those sauces by grossman are delicious and tinned toms etc are nowhere near as nice.

Not junk food

Castlemilk · 27/09/2014 14:26

You don't need the jar!

Really, garlic, some thyme and oregano perhaps, tomato puree, maybe a bit of red wine vinegar - Experiment!

3pigsinblanketsandasausagerole · 27/09/2014 14:27

It's not junk food

Hardly offering him a rustler!

Castlemilk · 27/09/2014 14:27

Yup to the organic nectar stuff. Tell your SIL that the sausages are made from 100% organic fairy thighs. Yum.

PeppermintInfusion · 27/09/2014 14:27

Delicious and nutritious by the sounds of it Smile
Presumably you're not using grisly value sausages Wink

As others have said, I wouldn't bother with the LG sauce. Also I love a tin of beans (butter/cannellini/etc) in ace if pasta.

ConcreteElephant · 27/09/2014 14:28

Oh, ok, it's the jar. As PP say, you just need some purée, herbs, I'm not averse to whacking a bit of ketchup in (just a bit!)...

I'm sure your own sauce isn't really disgusting - it's just very easy for taste buds to get used to the sugar/ salt in some jar sauces, which means that more 'natural' sauces can seem a bit bland.

HamishBamish · 27/09/2014 14:28

Junk food to me is a McDonalds or KFC or the like.

What you've made isn't junk food. Your SIL sounds a bit mean tbh.

dottytablecloth · 27/09/2014 14:28

I will definitely have to improve my sauce making!

In the meantime here is the end result!

SIL is taking a load of rubbish. I like those sauces so if you've got it put it in!
