Right am really exposing myself for a potential flaming here but anyway...

Am making a sausage casserole today with the following ingredients:

Butcher sausages
2 peppers
Tomatoes
Mushrooms
Onions
Tin chopped tomatoes
Fusilli pasta

And now for the Blush bit a JAR of Lloyd Grossman tomato sauce

It's a made up recipe a la dotty so please forgive me if that's not what a sausage casserole is supposed to be like!

Anyway SIL was her earlier and says she wouldn't feed that to her 3 year old as it's junk food.

I'm mortified

I thought it was quite nutritious.

I've a very fussy 20 month old who loves sausages.

AIBU and deluded to serve this up and think it's not junk food?

My DDs used to love sausage pasta too when they were little.

FortyFacedFuckers · 27/09/2014 14:31

Sounds delicious to me, can you expand on how to make it?

FortyFacedFuckers · 27/09/2014 14:32

Just seen the picture, definitely tell me how to make it? Please

Chewbecca · 27/09/2014 14:34

Try this sausage and tomato pasta next time. It's very simple, but no jar of sauce & very delicious. You can add extra veg if you like!

WookieCookiee · 27/09/2014 14:35

From memory LG jars are fine, no real nasties unlike for example tinned spaghetti hoops in Tom sauce. Really, just tinned tones with added herbs. She is being v unreasonable unless she only ever makes sauce from fresh tomatoes and fairies

DrSeuss · 27/09/2014 14:36

That's not junk and even if it were, why is it for her to pass comment? Also, a bit of junk now and then does no harm.

MintyChops · 27/09/2014 14:37

Not junk but your SIL sounds like a pain in the arse.

RJnomore · 27/09/2014 14:39

Jarred sauces (apart from tasting vile) have lots of sugars salts and preservative usually. Will confess not to having read Lloyd gross man specifically but I don't give my kids them except in emergencies. There are worse foods out there though. But it's definitely a convenience meal sorry op.

ChippingInLatteLover · 27/09/2014 14:46

I wouldn't call it a sausage casserole - more like pasta with sausage :)

It's very carb heavy with all of the pasta, if you made it the same way but without the pasta it would be a lovely sausage casserole which you could have with veg. A little heathier :)

But it is certainly NOT junk food or anything like what I'd consider 'convenience food' - not by a long shot!

Topaz25 · 27/09/2014 14:50

I would consider a "convenience meal" to be a ready meal, not homemade.

ChippingInLatteLover · 27/09/2014 14:51

Just for RJ

Lloyd Grossman Tomato Sauce (from the website, open to the public to look at before making assumptions - fancy that!)

Tomatoes (60%), Tomato Purée, Garlic, Basil (2.6%), Sunflower Oil, Sugar, Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Sea Salt, Concentrated Lemon Juice, Black Pepper

Evil evil and clearly fullllll of preservatives... oh what, no, not one in sight and hmm, a little salt.

Hmm

... and not all jarred sauces taste vile.

dottytablecloth · 27/09/2014 14:51

As I say it's a made up recipe but this is what I did.

Sliced and fried the (butchers sausages) in olive oil
Chopped onions and add to pan
Chopped red pepper
Chopped yellow pepper
Sliced about 6 mushrooms
Chopped some baby tomatoes
Add tin chopped tomatoes
Add to casserole dish

Cook pasta

Add the

Add pasta to sausage and veg

Cook for about 10-15 mins

Ds has just devoured it!

Am worried he's going to get hooked on sugary sauces now!

Your SIL sounds quite bitchy picky. Some jars of sauce have unnecessary added salt and sugar but I think Lloyd Grossman is one the better ones from memory and I certainly wouldn't call your lovingly homemade meal junk!

dottytablecloth · 27/09/2014 14:52

How do I make a proper sausage casserole?

Sorry for asking Blush

dottytablecloth · 27/09/2014 14:56

Was probably a bit sensitive to SIL and should just roll my eyes!

Am 29 weeks pregnant, working full time and have so much to do at the weekend.

I needed some reassurance that I'm not evil mother?

Convenient and junk aren't the same thing. I use ready chopped veg for convenience!

picnicbasketcase · 27/09/2014 14:57

Jars of sauce make things taste nicer than putting a tin of tomatoes and a pile of herbs or spices do. I'd much rather eat chilli made with a jar of Uncle Ben's sauce than a homemade version. I don't understand the snootiness around sauce jars tbh.

I do think it's odd to put pasta on a casserole though. Still wouldn't ever think of it as 'junk food' Hmm

KoalaKoo · 27/09/2014 14:59

Op i have no idea why everyone is telling you to leave out the jar whilst polishing their halos.
If course it will taste better with the jar in and i suspect that you will not find a single artificial additive in the ingredients list.
By the way, what does your interferring relative think counts as non junk food??

BBQsAreSooooOverrated · 27/09/2014 15:00

Mmmm sounds yummy. Not junk food at all!
I like Lloyd's sauces, there's much worse things you could be serving up. I'd rather cook something that my dc will definitely eat than slave over the hob for hours, they poke it with a fork for a bit and declare themselves full.

LadyLuck10 · 27/09/2014 15:00

My idea of junk food is totally different. Your meal sounds great. Ignore your SIL.

Bakeoffcakes · 27/09/2014 15:02

Thanks for posting the ingredients Chipping- so all can see jar sauces are not necessarily full of rubbish.

ChippingInLatteLover · 27/09/2014 15:05

Evil Mother

hahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahah you'd have to put a lot more effort into it than merely giving him pasta in sauce Grin

Loads of recipes for sausage casserole - just google and have a look which one takes your fancy!

couldbeanyone · 27/09/2014 15:06

Sounds ok to me!

Reminds me of an acquaintance a few years back who wouldn't feed her children tinned tomatoes and so when making anything required them would instead skin and chop fresh tomatoes! Madness!

ChippingInLatteLover · 27/09/2014 15:07

Bakeoff you're welcome :)

ChippingInLatteLover · 27/09/2014 15:08

couldbeanyone Grin You really do have to wonder about some people!
