to throw this letter in the bin about DS being called overweight and bake a cake instead

I cannot believe I've been sent a letter calling my 7 y/o Ds overweight and a patronising letter on health advice. Our families have always been quite big, and his dad plays rugby every week and is large but as fit as a butchers dog

Well, I think saying you'd feel utterly huge at a weight that is quite a long way below the top of your healthy weight range is a bit tone deaf! It may be true that you'd feel big, and as a small framed person I myself prefer to be in the bottom half of the range for my height, as I know at the upper end I am carrying quite a lot of fat. However, utterly huge, while a relative term up to a point, does not really describe those who aren't even medically overweight. To imply it does is quite offensive to those who have experienced the difficulties of really being huge. Perhaps smug was the wrong word, but things could have been phrased more tactfully.

The OP may not be keen to see weight as a problem or tackle it, but many people who do still struggle to lose weight and keep it off. Awareness of that seems to somewhat missing from some of the responses. It is such a complex issue that there is almost never a situation where that complexity shouldn't be acknowledged. I always ask myself if I'd be happy for someone with anorexia/other ED to read my comment.

Steeleye spanx...in context of what I was saying, your comment doesn't make sense.

Yes, I am aware that 'overfed' children can grow slightly taller or broader than they 'should' due to excess calories. But these children will also generally be visibly overweight.

Some people with small or average-framed children obviously think that anyone who uses 'large framed' for their dc is using another term for 'a bit fat' when that is NOT always the case.

Some children, like my ds1, are large framed naturally due to genes...but not overweight in the slightest. Unless you're suggesting that I overfeed my ds1 but this weight goes 'straight to his bones', and that's the reason his frame is so large whilst carrying no excess fat...

The point I am making is that only about 60% of the 'frame' of a person is genetic. There is no way of knowing whether your DS is 'large' due to genetics, environmental factors or (as is generally believed to be the case now) a combination of the two.

The narrowest part is your waist showme. If you have an hourglass figure with a clearly defined waist then you probably don't have to worry about your waist measurement, you lucky lady!

BlotOnTheLandscape · 02/10/2014 17:43

That wrist/elbow thing is interesting. I am 5 foot 9 and my wrist measurement is the largest for my height in the large framed category and my elbow is an inch over. I, like one of my children, have very broad shoulders. I guess we are both large framed.

I did my waist measurement and it was sort of amber despite bmi 20/21. Slim hips larger waist. Silly measurement as i could have more fat on my hips waist the same and get a better measurement.

As i cant make hips bigger i would have to lose weight from my waist which i dont think is that large at 28".
I guess the point is using only 1 measure (bmi) can be slightly inaccurate for a couple of frames but provides a bit of info.

At school i would be concerned over the accuracy of height measurement. A nurse recently took 2-3cm off my height making my bmi .5 higher. But i havent shrunk.
