to think no one should own land and ignore a sign saying private woods

Ok o will probably get flamed here.

But there is a badly managed woods near me with am old broken sign that say private woods. Aibu to collect a few broken branches for the wood burner? I know it is stealing, but this woods is overgrown and I'm thinking how unethical it is for anyone to own land.

Land used to all be free, until someone carved it all up to hoard for themselves. If land was still free now maybe we wouldn't have to all be working such stupid hours wasting our lives doing a job we don't like.

OP, I'm in need of some bricks to build a shed, can you PM me your address so I can have a few, in the interests of being all ethical and sharing, what's yours is mine after all!

hoobypickypicky · 26/09/2014 12:18

Igotafreegoattoo, yes, trespass is a civil matter, not a police one.

Evans, I took Igot's comment about burning the sign to be a joke. I thought it was amusing.

mis3, WTF has people shooting badgers got to do with disturbing badger setts or trespassing on land and taking logs or sticks?

Spidergirl77 · 26/09/2014 12:19

Lots of animals live in and hibernate in small woods.

It's wrong to take it, you will spoil the ecology and it's stealing. Buy your own wood your tight arse.

mls3 · 26/09/2014 12:20

You don't understand the difference between ownership of items and ownership of earth's surface?

I support people squatting in disused property that has been bought by overseas investment company's who have no intention of anyone using a house as somewhere to live.

mls3 · 26/09/2014 12:21

I don't think I would be traspasing as a footpath runs through it.

To the person who wtf'd us having shot the dog the police and dog warden had been made aware of it's straying several times. Over the course of 8 strays onto our property it - bit our ds, caused severe damage to one of our ponies, killed 6 chickens, attacked our dogs and seriously injured 3 sheep 2 of which had to be pts as they were too far gone.... So please go wtf somewhere else :-)

If people ask then they can go into the 'wood' and look for firewood generally we only let our friends do so :-)

HoobyPickyPicky Evans, I took Igot's comment about burning the sign to be a joke. I thought it was amusing
Good for you Smile

itsbetterthanabox · 26/09/2014 12:26

Ok it's an issue that it bit your child but that's not a reason for you to shoot an animal. Why do you have a gun..

VivaLeBeaver · 26/09/2014 12:26

I'm sat in a car park and there's some pallets in a corner. Maybe I should just take those for my log burner?? Oh no, that'd be stealing.

wannabestressfree · 26/09/2014 12:26

Op you are totally bonkers. I love threads like this

EvansOvalPiesYumYum · 26/09/2014 12:26

You don't understand the difference between ownership of items and ownership of earth's surface?

Grin
iK8 · 26/09/2014 12:27

I was right! You utter land-owning hypocrite!

As regards the wood burners... traditionally working class they are now very much the preserve of the typically middle class and the middle classes typically own property. And... bingo.

Didn't seriously think rented homes do not ever have wood burners, just knew this one wouldn't be one of them

VivaLeBeaver · 26/09/2014 12:27

Mmmm why does she have a gun? Because most farmers do.

When I lived on a farm we had guns and bf shot the neighbours dog for sheep worrying. Of course he would. You're entitled to shoot a dog if its worrying livestock.

iK8 · 26/09/2014 12:28

What's your house or your flat sitting on op? Or does it hover just above the top soil? Presumably in a self-righteous fashion.

EvansOvalPiesYumYum · 26/09/2014 12:29

I don't think I would be traspasing as a footpath runs through it.

But if there is a sign clearly stating "Private Land", then surely the footpath is not for public use?
Unless the sign is there illegally and the land is a public right of way (still does not permit the taking of branches, or anything else, though)

gordyslovesheep · 26/09/2014 12:30

did somebody really compare the OP to The Diggers? SERIOUSLY Hmm

go nick some wood OP that'll bring down capitalism - right on

land has never been free - never - it's a nice ideological principle in in reality it's bollox

ArsenicFaceCream · 26/09/2014 12:31

Grin @ 'why do you have a gun?'

JeanneDeMontbaston · 26/09/2014 12:31

Oh, sorry. Blush

I thought it was funny. It is a song about the diggers, not the movement itself, FWIW.

VivaLeBeaver · 26/09/2014 12:32

So OP do you think its unethical that you own a house?

NecesitoDormir · 26/09/2014 12:34

You don't understand the difference between ownership of items and ownership of earth's surface?

Why stop at the earth OP? Let's extrapolate that out...can I have my atoms back please? They aren't being utilised fully at current.

KatieKaye · 26/09/2014 12:34

First, Scotland has a different legal system to the rest of the uk with a right to roam but not to nick stuff
Second,People do not just own the top soil, OP. At least not on Scotland. Legally you own ad coelo ad centrum, which is from the heavens to the centre of the earth
Third your statistic of 1% owning 99% is tosh. Do a search of the official registers and se how much is owned by councils, forestry, water, national trust etc
And yes you ABU

Nanny0gg · 26/09/2014 12:36

itsbetterthanabox Did you read the explanation? You think it's okay for dogs to worry sheep to death, kill chickens and hurt the ponies? Never mind biting a child.

The dog was out of control. Shooting it was no more inhumane than having it put to sleep which would have been the only other option.

NecesitoDormir · 26/09/2014 12:37

It scares me that our current education system is as is.

History: Fail
Latin: Fail
English: Fail
Geography: Fail
Philosophy: Fail
Economics: Fail

YABU and you know it.

swingonastar · 26/09/2014 12:37

I know a couple who collect all of the wood for their fire this way, they spend time almost every day picking up bits and pieces from different places. They will never take anything without permission though, as they know that they could do more harm to the environment by removing stuff that should be left! It's not particularly difficult to find out who owns land, even asking around will usually give you some idea (local post office/businesses).

If what you want is to walk on the land etc then you possibly do have the right to roam on it (I'm in Scotland where this covers far more than in England I believe so not sure what applies to you), but given that you want to take from it I think you should ask. You're surely going to take more than a few bits, and you might inadvertently encourage others to do the same.

For what it's worth I largely agree with what you say about land ownership, but if it's something you feel that strongly about why not find out who owns it, and see what you can do for the greater good?

mls3 · 26/09/2014 12:38

Are you sure about that?

I'm very sure in england at least only people like the crown estate / c of e have extraction rights. So they are the type of people that would benefit from cracking, not Joe bloggs.

Anyway fuck it its lunch time and I'm going with my rucksack and going to fill it with branches.
