That's all.

OP posts:
BIWI · 25/09/2014 21:57

It's human though, isn't it, usual? We all judge. It's disingenuous to say we don't.

You are making judgements about me right now because of my posts.

cartsmar · 25/09/2014 22:00

It's not the lack of education I don't get so much as once people learn the right way, they say 'Nah, I like being wrong, and I'll stay wrong.'

Er, what? Why? Confused

Izzy24 · 25/09/2014 22:00

Alison, that was an ironic comment....!

Izzy24 · 25/09/2014 22:01

Doh autocorrect . 'Alis' !

cartsmar · 25/09/2014 22:02

Because that really does make you a moron.

Alisvolatpropiis · 25/09/2014 22:02

Well, quite usual, I am more educated than anyone in my family past or present. More successful? No, a nicer person, nope.

I'd certainly be brought down a peg or two if I started behaving like I was "better" than them.

There is more to a good person than education and grammar.

The trouble with mumsnet is that is has subtly advertised itself as being for the 'educated, middle class' market of Internet users.

jellybelly701 · 25/09/2014 22:02

BIWI

I'm a very keen reader, always have been. I got two B's in English GCSE. I may not have the best writing skills but that doesn't mean I'm not 'clever' there are plenty of things I am good at.

usualsuspect333 · 25/09/2014 22:05

I wouldn't judge someone for not understanding basic grammar though, because It's pretty obvious to me there are lots of reasons for their lack of understanding.

JeanneDeMontbaston · 25/09/2014 22:05

Oh, great.

As usual, this thread has descended into terms like 'moron'. Lovely.

BIWI · 25/09/2014 22:08

I'm sorry. I still judge people on the way that they write.

But the people arguing against me are also, interestingly, all people who write well, spell properly, use correct grammar and punctuate well.

I'm sure this doesn't make me a nicer person, and I've never claimed to be a nicer person. You can all hate me as much as you wish.

But, actually, as much as people might resist it, being well educated is something to aspire to. I can't see why that might not be the case.

HaroldLloyd · 25/09/2014 22:09

I don't think poor grammar is a badge, however I refuse to proof read on here. This is what I do when I have some down time.

I know that my autocorrect is responsible for some things that I do as a repeat offence, your instead of you're for example. I just don't care honestly.

Alisvolatpropiis · 25/09/2014 22:10

usual

I said I notice poor grammar, not that I judge the poster for it.

I enjoy lots of posters on MN, not all of them have perfect grammar. I've noticed, but don't care. They're interesting and/or funny.

In my mind there is a difference between noticing which goes along the lines of "I'd have typed x but whatever, interesting/touching/funny/sad post" and judging which would be me responding with something snide.

HaroldLloyd · 25/09/2014 22:13

I know we all judge things, it's commenting on it, especially on a thread when about 10 people have already done so which I think is a bit rum.

BIWI · 25/09/2014 22:13

I'd also like to point out that I never respond with something snide. If I post on a thread, it's regardless of someone's spelling or grammar. And the response that I give is always based on what the poster has asked, and how I feel about their spelling/grammar is never a consideration.

However, this thread is asking specifically about grammar, which is different.

usualsuspect333 · 25/09/2014 22:15

My grammar is crap. I don't really care if posters wince when they see my glaring errors.

But I hate the thought that people are put off posting on MN because of threads like this.

fourforksache · 25/09/2014 22:17

but your sidebolloox are lovely.

BIWI · 25/09/2014 22:17

Actually, usual, I don't think your grammar is crap at all.

fourforksache · 25/09/2014 22:18

But I hate the thought that people are put off posting on MN because of threads like this.

Good point.

BIWI · 25/09/2014 22:22

What evidence do you have that people are put off by it?

And why, actually, would you argue for a way of posting that is grammatically incorrect?

I don't, actually, ever post to correct someone's spelling or grammar. But I do see a lot of people here who argue that it's OK for people to be 'allowed' to continue using poor spelling and grammar. Why is that? Surely that's just as patronising as correcting them?

JeanneDeMontbaston · 25/09/2014 22:23

But, BIWI, why is it ok to be ignorant of the reasons why people might make this error (as you are), but not to be ignorant of the grammar (as you wrongly believe people must be who make this error)?

That makes no sense to me.

usualsuspect333 · 25/09/2014 22:27

That's because I'm sober and posting from a laptop, and not under the influence and using my BB or kindle, BIWI Grin

BIWI · 25/09/2014 22:28

I have no idea what that actually means, Jeanne. What, exactly, am I ignorant of?!

BIWI · 25/09/2014 22:28

And, usual, because you're a clever woman Grin

Alisvolatpropiis · 25/09/2014 22:29

It isn't crap, usual.

No doubt that will annoy you.

I think all can gather from the thousands of threads ongoing that grammar is not at the forefront of every posters minds (bet I did a typo there).

There are all sorts of awful opinions being bandied round at the moment which are far worse and far more silencing than "I don't like it when someone writes should of".

usualsuspect333 · 25/09/2014 22:30

I've seen posters corrected over and over on a thread.

I've seen posters upset by it. Of course it would put some people off.
