Did the weeks food shop today and it came to £102. I mentioned this to dp when he phoned and he said it was a lot of money as it was the same when I last shopped 9 days previous. I do have to top up on bread and milk etc sometimes between shops but that should last our family for a week at least. Our family is dp, myself and 2 teenagers. I do realise we often run short of money but I thought that this was a reasonable amount. Aibu or is dp?

No I think for two teenagers and adults it's ok but wouldn't be expecting to top up in between?

It's about what our weekly shop is, plus too many a few top ups during the week.

Where did you shop and what did you buy? Sounds reasonable to me.

Well I aim for £50 for two adults and occasional meals for small child, so I think about double for effectively four adults is about right. Actually teenagers probably eat more than adults so you're doing quite well!

Isn't this two questions? Is £100 a lot of money? Absolutely yes. Is £100 a lot of money to spend on a week's food shopping? Totally depends on what you're buying.

I think that’s fine for 2 adults and 2 teens, teens eat like they are hollow.

Our weekly shop is always over £100 and that's just for me, DP and 5 year old DD. 6 week old DS doesn't need much .

You are feeding 4 adults, 2-3 meals a day for 7 days. I don't understand how that is possible on much less tbh.

Unless you can't afford it I don't see what your DP's problem is.

£100 for two adults and two teenagers is pretty good going. I spend more than that for my family of 4 and am pretty careful often buying stuff from the value range and special offers. Food is expensive. My dh never goes to the supermarket... When he did go a month ago, he came home shocked about how much everything costs!

It was a tescos shop this time and was the usual sort of things such as meat, veg fruit, packed lunch stuff toiletries and cleaning stuff. I often shop in lidls but somethings I can't get there. The lidls shop is cheaper but I'm more likely to top up if I shop there. The topping up is only things that will go off within a week like bread as we all have packed lunches.

I can't get our shop below £100 a week! I feed me and the DH, DD and 3 cats.

I'm a cheapskate as well so buy own brand beans etc. That will include a bottle of wine a week.

Well assuming you're eating only 2 meals a day each at home, that's 56 meals! (4 people x 2 meals x 7 days) so I think £100 is pretty bargainous.

Personally, if my partner moaned at me for spending £100 on a week's shop (and you made the last £100 last 9 days!), I'd hand him the shopping list and challenge him to do it cheaper.

He does do it cheaper but then we run out of food!

In our house there is myself, DP and a small dog and we're around £50 a week so yes, I'd say that what you paid is probably alright.

But if he's not buying enough food to feed you all, that's not actually doing it cheaper :o

I think he finds it painful to part with that much money in one go. If he's in charge we end up shopping every 3-4 days and I'm sure we spend more that way. He was single for years (we've only lived together for 2 years )and I think he can't get his head around how much 4 adults eat. I asked how much he spent when he was single and he said about £30!

I spend between 90 - 100 for 2 adults and a 5 year old. Of course, my 5 year old eats like a teenager, so I imagine it will be worse soon enough!

That includes wine and the occasional bottle of shampoo or something if I can't get to a chemist instead.

Yes, have you thought of adding up the other food that is bought to cover the week when he does it? Probably much more than £100.

Can you use another supermarket, or use Home Bargains/Wilkos for toiletries adn cleaning products? Tesco is very expensive for what you get. On that amount, you would easily save 20-30 pw at Aldi or Lidl and get better quality food.

The thing is thought a tesco shop is not all food is it?

It's medicine, toiletries, the odd item of clothing, cleaning products, the tools/kitchen gadgets, pet food, birthday presents + cards, stationary, etc ect ect .......

It's no good just saying i want you to go to tesco and spend x pounds per head on food and expect that to be it! And i find the person who does not usually do the weekly shop doesn't realise how much STUFF it takes to run a busy household and is usually the one going about the bill.

So he spent £30 on one person, and you spend £25 on each person. Might be worth pointing that out to him.

Well if he spent £30 a week when he was on his own, that is more expensive that what you are spending.
you are doing it for £25 per person. Also food costs have gone up massively in the last two years, so you are definatly doing it better than him.

Our shop is usually £60-80, depending on cleaning/washing stuff.

That's for me, DP, DS1(5) and DS2 (8mo). No meat, which helps. If I'm having a lean month I buy fruit and veg at Aldi or Lidl instead, and top up the shopping at Asda, and can get it down to £40 (food only).

We used to spend waaay more, as we lived right over the road from a Tesco and basically shopped day by day. We wasted so much money! Now we're out in the sticks and do once a week very strictly, except for a milk run mid week.
