aibu to think £100 isn't a lot of money?

Did the weeks food shop today and it came to £102. I mentioned this to dp when he phoned and he said it was a lot of money as it was the same when I last shopped 9 days previous. I do have to top up on bread and milk etc sometimes between shops but that should last our family for a week at least. Our family is dp, myself and 2 teenagers. I do realise we often run short of money but I thought that this was a reasonable amount. Aibu or is dp?

I actually think £100 a week is good going I seem to spend a lot more and I thought i was carefull, although like fluffy my supermarket shops have household goods and medicines etc as well as food in them.

Tadla · 23/09/2014 15:38

That is not a lot and sounds like you can afford it. We spend around around £120 pw on 2 adults,a toddler and small baby (inc nappie, wipes, cleaning, loo rolls and toiletries) but do spend around £40 per week on wine/beer/junk food like chocolate.

Im trying aldi now and top up buying gluten free, organic etc at waitrose and for the second week in a row, im down to £100.

Tadla · 23/09/2014 15:42

i should say, of that £120, about £40 is alcohol and junk food.

hebe242 · 23/09/2014 15:42

We did manage 2 weeks running to spend £50 in lidls a while back when we were short of money. I think he thinks this is achievable every week but we literally ate everything in the freezer and cupboards so in reality what we used was not just £50. We aren't that badly off but occasionally get caught out by an unexpected bill.

I don't think 100 is a lot as you have 2 teenagers. I find my teenage sons eat more than the adults in my family.

Lally112 · 23/09/2014 15:46

maybe not to you but to some people yes, I live on 60 quid a week and have four quid n my pocket right now and that is all I have to my name until tomorrow.

CumberCookie · 23/09/2014 15:47

YANBU I think that's pretty good going myself.

Allisgood1 · 23/09/2014 16:12

We spend between 60-70 and top up weekly so prob spend same as you. DH, me, 2yr, 5yr, newborn.

ChickenFajitaAndNachos · 23/09/2014 17:21

3.60 ish per person per day doesn't sound excessive to me.

Humansatnav · 23/09/2014 17:24

When ds is home from Uni and there are 4 of us I struggle to keep to under £90 pw with mid week top up of £10-£15

Scholes34 · 23/09/2014 17:34

Of course you can do it for less than £100, but it takes lots of careful menu planning and he won't be happy when he gets the munchies.

DH always says "How much?" when I return from the supermarket shopping and would spend more if he's on his own. Best approach is to do the shopping together, so he knows exactly how you spend what you do.

Itsjustmeagain · 23/09/2014 17:38

I think £100 is quite a lot but then I don't have teenagers yet! We have 2 adults and 5 children ages 2-10 and spend about £60-80 a week. Some weeks it has to be a lot less if work has been a bit sparse and I can get it as low as £40 but not really any lower (and tbh thats a pretty boring week).

Momagain1 · 23/09/2014 17:40

I spend about that much for 2 adults and a medium sized child. But, i am getting delivery waitrose because reasons.

OddFodd · 23/09/2014 17:43

Ah - so the teenage children aren't his teenage children. So he thinks they should be cheaper

Topseyt · 23/09/2014 17:52

£100 for 4 people each week is about par for the course.

There are 4 of us permanently living at home, 5 when my eldest daughter comes home from uni. I generally spend about £80 a week in the supermarket, and about another £20 or so locally when bits and bobs are needed. I would struggle to get it lower than that.

FunkyBoldRibena · 23/09/2014 17:52

I asked how much he spent when he was single and he said about £30!

So 4 x £30 being £120...he's a bit of an idiot really isn't he?

Topseyt · 23/09/2014 17:55

You need to teach him basic maths, as Funky has shown. Grin

PiratePanda · 23/09/2014 17:58

There's two adults and a primary school child in our house; our shop must be £160 a fortnight. So £100 for a week for four adults sounds about right.

That being said, food prices have skyrocketed about 50% during the recession, so it's still painful.

hebe242 · 23/09/2014 18:00

I have pointed the £30 thing out to him but every time I spend around £100 it results in the same conversation about it being a lot of money. I just get fed up with it

I do know it's possible to shop for less as we have to sometimes but as MN has proved it's not an unreasonable amount. I understand his worries as our account can get a bit short at times but I just wanted to get clarification that it's not an unusual amount for this number of people.

That is a lot to me. Our weekly shop is between £35 and £50 depending what cleaning products etc we need. I get my meat from a wholesale farm shop, fruit and veg off the market and as much as I can from Aldi with the odd top ups costing between £5 and £10 if we need extra nappies etc. this is for myself, my partner and a toddler.

SugarplumKate · 23/09/2014 20:04

Go to Aldi, it will be much cheaper. I spend just £100 for 6 of us in Aldi.

Humansatnav · 24/09/2014 07:17

Get him involved in the meal planning/ shopping list / going shopping

My dh used to moan about the price of shopping until he took over & the first month he did it the shopping bill was nearly £500!
Now we go it together & for me, him & dd 15 we usually spend £55-75 pw using Aldi and Home Bargains.
Shoots up when ds is home from uni though.

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 24/09/2014 07:26

Ours hardly ever ends up under a £100 nowadays (also have two teenagers), and I'm forever topping up Blush
