Now that the Scotland referendum is over, does anyone else think it is now time to have a complete constitutional reform, and discontinue the role of the Queen and all her associated hangers-on?

OP posts:
rainbowinmyroom · 21/09/2014 23:24

And you know this for a fact?

onelastfling · 21/09/2014 23:26

YABU and extremely un patriotic.

The Monarchy is exactly what sets England apart from the rest of the world.

I for one would be devastated if the Monarchy was abolished. It's the common thread through our chequered history.

The Prince of Wales has already said that the Monarchy WILL be slimmed down and consist of Him, The Duchess of Cornwall, Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince Harry and their children.

The Queen has been utterly wonderful in her role as head of state. Remember the turnout to her jubilee? Millions of people on the Thames it was spectacular no other country can do pomp and ceremony like us.

The monarchy costs each tax payer 56p what can you buy for 56p? I think people need to get a grip.

If we had a president they would cost us more have you seen how much the president of the United States costs the tax payer? $1.4billion. The Obamas going on Christmas vacation costs $4million. In comparison we get brilliant value for the Royal Family.

Agree with this.

YANBU. Would be happy for the Queen to see out her days, but think the younger royals are a bunch of over-privileged hangers on and resent the amount of money spent on them. The only one I'd have any time for is Princess Anne.

People have short memories.

GarlicSeptimus · 21/09/2014 23:30

Just answering your title - YANBU, but they can stay as far as I'm concerned. They just can't own all that land & wealth, be immune from the law and keep their weird & greedy lives secret.

They can be paid about as much as a top footballer, for carrying out figurehead duties. That should be plenty.

zen1 · 21/09/2014 23:32

I have a problem with people having so much privilege just by virtue of their birth. They've done nothing to earn it.

onelastfling · 21/09/2014 23:33

So you are happy for politicians to be paid a fortune.

trufflesnout · 21/09/2014 23:35

onelast you might want to bold or italicise parts of posts you didn't write when you quote them - it makes very confusing reading otherwise. I don't really understand your post at 23:26 because of this.

As for how many No voters support the monarchy, I'm not sure how you can prove this. The tie between Scotland and England runs far deeper than the principal of being ruled by the same monarch.

You equated a republic with a police state, so I was just asking if you knew what a police state was? I can think of one current police state off the top of my head - and that's North Korea.

I'm not sure what your line of ?????????'s were about either.

onelastfling · 21/09/2014 23:36

You do realise that a lot of polititians that rise to the higher ranks come from 'privilaged' births?

So, your Utopia of a 'Republic', would still be ruled by people that have started off from a 'privilaged background'.
laughable if it weren't so tragic

angeltulips · 21/09/2014 23:37

I love the way the "slimmed down"
Monarchy consists of 10+ people. It's an absolute farce. No foi on what they really spend, security costs for the legions of them not included in their coatings etc. the queen is worth $14 billion or something obscene like that and she has the nerve to apply for a winter heating handout - says it all.

Those who are comparing win Obama - you do realise he's like Cameron and the queen rolled into one? It's laughable that you would even try to compare Obama (making decisions and doing real work every day) with a monarch (turn up, be waited on hand and foot and do nothing).

I would vote yes to get rid of the lot of them in a heartbeat. It'll just get worse when the queen goes - why would I ever curtsy to will and kate, who seem to be both useless and a bit on the thick side, and despite all their wealth and resources have achieved nothing at all? So many other people to look up to; let's have one of them as our head of state.

rainbowinmyroom · 21/09/2014 23:39

Drinking on a Sunday night makes for some strange posts.

trufflesnout · 21/09/2014 23:39

Yes onelast, many politicians do come from privileged backgrounds. But surely you can see that's a separate issue to sustaining a monarchy?

There is definitely a problem with rich white males ruling things in the political roost, but as it goes, rich white males feature quite heavily in the monarchy too and the difference is we didn't elect & put them there.

As far as I'm concerned, the support of a monarchy merely helps to perpetuate the importance of a class system.

onelastfling · 21/09/2014 23:44

sustaining a Monarchy?

This is the part that makes me laugh.

The Monarchy are so popular that they more than earn their keep.
The Monarchy is what makes us unique.
What part of that don't you understand?

trufflesnout · 21/09/2014 23:47

I understand what you're saying I just think you're wrong.

GarlicSeptimus · 21/09/2014 23:47

"no other country can do pomp and ceremony like us"

We can be pompous & ceremonial without letting a weird, secretive, greedy family own vast swathes of our land & our lives.

The London millenium do was pretty good, wasn't it? We paid for it, just like we pay for all the Mountbatten-Windsor related bashes.

Confused
onelastfling · 21/09/2014 23:50

The Monarchy gives us Unity.
And we need Unity.
That's all I can say.

trufflesnout · 21/09/2014 23:52

Okayy onelast ...

Yy Garlic and tbh I think saying "no one else can do pomp like us" is a bit, well, ignorant? To bring up France again, Versailles is far more grand and impressive than Buckingham palace imo.

GarlicSeptimus · 21/09/2014 23:55

I tend to agree we don't have a patent on 'pomp'! But that one's not worth arguing about Wink

onelastfling · 21/09/2014 23:56

There are a LOT of Royalists in this country, so I think 'they' are ok for the time being :) despite the doomsayers trying to say otherwise Grin

trufflesnout · 21/09/2014 23:56

Ah pomp and 'Unity'. Cheers Lizzie.

onelastfling · 21/09/2014 23:58

'Cos, You can't beat a bit of pomp and unity. Innit?

trufflesnout · 22/09/2014 00:01

Shame. And I was so hoping we could have a police state to keep us in our plebeian place and make sure we can never aspire to true equality and democracy. Oh wait...

GarlicSeptimus · 22/09/2014 00:03

Grin Truffle. Indeed.

onelastfling · 22/09/2014 00:04

I know, We should be like the States! Yes!
Their system is SO classless.
Obama mixes with the lower plebs not
There are NO poor people in this 'classless' 'non'royal country' trailer park/cardboard city places notwithstanding

They're JUST like the common people, dontcha know!

(yeah - those royal dudes are well-evil)
