Now that the Scotland referendum is over, does anyone else think it is now time to have a complete constitutional reform, and discontinue the role of the Queen and all her associated hangers-on?

You do realise that a lot of polititians that rise to the higher ranks come from 'privilaged' births?

yes. yes they do. that's a problem that needs solving too.

but you do now the difference right? David Cameron never had any special right to his position. He had to earn it. Yes, it was easier for him to earn it then someone off of a rough estate, but it wasn't actually encoded in law that DC become the PM.

and yes, let's get rid of the lords too. Monarchy, C of E and Lords. Perhaps we can join the 21st century then.

trufflesnout · 22/09/2014 00:08

No one is saying we should be like the US.

onelastfling · 22/09/2014 00:09

Careful what oyou wish for.

trufflesnout · 22/09/2014 00:10

one I'm not sure what you're trying to say? All I'm getting is you're pro royal but other than "they give us Unity" I'm not sure what you're argument for keeping them is?

SuperWifeANDMum · 22/09/2014 00:13

So I see what everyone means when wanting to abolish the Monarchy. They don't like the fact that in England we inherit titles through birth. Tough. That's the way it is. Even if we abolished the Monarchy we would still have the non royal dukes, earls, viscounts etc whose titles would continue to pass through their bloodlines and who are and would still be considerably richer than most.

I cannot fathom why anyone wants to vote to abolish something that is inextricably linked with our past and it's something we should be immensely proud of.

SuperWifeANDMum · 22/09/2014 00:15

Get rid of lords too Why?

What is wrong with people.

trufflesnout · 22/09/2014 00:16

Because members of the house of lords are unelected and have power to cause real damage in parliament (unlike the queen) super

CheerfulYank · 22/09/2014 00:19

I think we're more class-less than you are. Hmm

GarlicSeptimus · 22/09/2014 00:19

I guess it depends whether one's immensely proud of an historical tradition that ensured poverty & suffering among most of our ancestors, while the entitled few got to live in extreme luxury and hold total power over the rest. I'm moderately proud that our ancestors managed to wrest some of that power from them. I'd quite like current generations to take it a step further :) You know, out of respect for our historical tradition.

trufflesnout · 22/09/2014 00:20

Yy Garlic Grin excellent way of putting it

TheWholeOfTheSpoon · 22/09/2014 00:21

There are loads of other countries that "do" pomp and ceremony really well, it's just the UK likes to lie to itself about this.

I do think the Queen deserves a huge amount of respect after the service she's put her entire life into, even though she was never 'meant' to be in this position in the first place. After she dies, however, I think it's time to ask what the country really wants.

writtenguarantee · 22/09/2014 00:23

I cannot fathom why anyone wants to vote to abolish something that is inextricably linked with our past and it's something we should be immensely proud of.

we've clearly stated why.

Just because it's a tradition doesn't make it a good tradition. Your argument basically comes down to 'this is the way it's done, this is the way it has always done so it's great'. you do see the problem with that reasoning, right? That can justify any injustice as good simply because it's happening.

As for all the other titles, fine. As long as Duke Whatever has no special codified privileges (yes, wealth buys privilege), that's fine.

Get rid of lords too

there are positions in the lords reserved for the clergy. It's ridiculous.

SuperWifeANDMum · 22/09/2014 00:24

Abolishing the Monarchy would not create a fairer society.

Most of the Queens wealth is tied up in land and objects that belong to the country anyway.

Some aristocratic families are worth more than the queen in terms of monetary wealth so even if we abolished the monarchy these families would still exist.

trufflesnout · 22/09/2014 00:26

Yes super, they would still exist - but we would not be supporting them via our taxes.

writtenguarantee · 22/09/2014 00:27

Abolishing the Monarchy would not create a fairer society.

in a small way it would. No one has a right to the head of state. isn't that more fair?

SuperWifeANDMum · 22/09/2014 00:28

A small portion of our taxes goes towards paying for the Royal Family. Abolishing the monarchy would not drastically improve any of the public services in my opinion.

I would prefer to pay more tax to keep the royals.

SuperWifeANDMum · 22/09/2014 00:29

What is the benefit to the ordinary working people if the monarchy is abolished?

GarlicSeptimus · 22/09/2014 00:31

Everybody knows the monarch still has the right to boss Parliament around, presumably?

SuperWifeANDMum · 22/09/2014 00:32

I think the real issue here is you all don't like that we have a class system in England.

Some people are born into privilege that's how it will always be monarchy or no monarchy.

If tomorrow David Cameron announced that there was no more monarchy, your life wouldn't change and neither would the average English mans. All it would mean is we have lost part of our national identity.

writtenguarantee · 22/09/2014 00:32

I would prefer to pay more tax to keep the royals.

oh boy.

What is the benefit to the ordinary working people if the monarchy is abolished?

is that the only reason to do things?

writtenguarantee · 22/09/2014 00:34

I think the real issue here is you all don't like that we have a class system in England.

righto.

Some people are born into privilege that's how it will always be monarchy or no monarchy.

again, why don't you understand the distinction? Their privilege is codified in the law. no one else has that privilege.

SuperWifeANDMum · 22/09/2014 00:37

writtenguarantee You and none of the other pro republic posters have any significant arguments to abolish the monarchy.

All you keep spouting is the head of state crap. Get over it. There will always be people richer than you and born into privilege that is not going to change.

writtenguarantee · 22/09/2014 00:40

There will always be people richer than you and born into privilege that is not going to change.

I never complained about that. I know that.

But I will be ruled over by people I, nor anyone, ever chose because of monarchists.

writtenguarantee · 22/09/2014 00:42

You and none of the other pro republic posters have any significant arguments to abolish the monarchy.

then you haven't read the thread. You certainly haven't addressed any of the points brought up by anyone. just talked about "our past", which isn't a good reason.

trufflesnout · 22/09/2014 00:53

Yy Super you need to RTFT, many points have been raised.
