Now that the Scotland referendum is over, does anyone else think it is now time to have a complete constitutional reform, and discontinue the role of the Queen and all her associated hangers-on?

not a fan of the new royals. would like to see some sort of vote after liz snuffs it. we do have a ridiculously unfair system in this country. it's quite antiquated.

rainbowinmyroom · 21/09/2014 22:00

Not a fan of the new royals, either.

HappydaysArehere · 21/09/2014 22:02

Tourist industry would take a hit. Life would be a lot duller. Royal family influence is substantial abroad. Monarchy is part of our Britishness. For goodness sake leave us something which has continuity with the past.

clayspaniel · 21/09/2014 22:03

Granny it is an insult to all the tourists to the UK to state that they only come because of the RF!! Do you really think that people only come here because they think that they might see a Royal in real life? What nonsense!

Eminybob you don't need to know lots about the subject - suffice to say that having Royals is undemocratic and other countries do perfectly well without a Monarch. Simple!

OP posts:
rainbowinmyroom · 21/09/2014 22:06

Royal family dull beyond belief. Plenty of ties to the past without that ridiculous lot of parasites on endless holidays.

clayspaniel · 21/09/2014 22:06

Happy do you really think that your life would be a lot duller without the Royals?! As for continuity with the past ... !!!

hoobypickypicky · 21/09/2014 22:07

YANBU. rainbow has said it all, really.

AllotmentQueen · 21/09/2014 22:08

Happydays, there is no evidence whatsoever that the tourist industry would lose a penny.

Life would be a lot duller????? Seriously???? My life wouldn't be more dull - not one teeny tiny bit! If your life is enhanced by the existence of the royals then maybe you need to get one - a life that is!

rainbowinmyroom · 21/09/2014 22:08

Colonisation a part of Britishness, too, but thankfully times progressed and realised what an outdated and unfair practice it is and it died out.

AllotmentQueen · 21/09/2014 22:08

x-posted with OP!

rainbowinmyroom · 21/09/2014 22:14

Yes, such exciting news: Kate pops another sprog. Wills goes to another wedding. Harry dates another bimbo (Chelsea excepted). Beatrice and Eugenie, who fucking cares?

SlicedAndDiced · 21/09/2014 22:20

Tourist industry would benefit surely?

You could open up Buckingham palace and assorted others completely for tourists. No one actually expects to see a royal do they?

Legoland Windsor raked in more money than the royals in tourist revenue anyway.

skinnysoyvanillalatte · 21/09/2014 22:24

I agree its an insult to suggest that tourists come for the royal family. Hell, we Aussies have our own Royal now in Denmark :p
I first visited UK with view to seeing the history (not just realted to kings and queens btw), architecture, places - geography, fashion, famous stores, music scene and "cool brittania" , which was the tourist push then. Never the royal family.
In fact, I avoided buckingham palace....boring and tacky!

skinnysoyvanillalatte · 21/09/2014 22:27

Come to think of it, seeing the following excites me, as a tourist, more than seeing anything to do with the royal family:

fish and chips, other famous pommy food..er, spotted dick?
brigton beach
anything to do with harry potter - e.g oxford dining halls
british supermodels
pony rides on the beach
fortnums

loads more

KERALA1 · 21/09/2014 22:33

The monarchists that support skipping Charles to have wills as king make me laugh. You support this system - the whole point is you get whoever is next in line you cannot pick and choose if you want a hereditary monarchy - totally contradictory.

Love the history of the royals but cannot believe we still have them embarrassing anachronism. The thought of anyone curtsying to prince Andrew makes me feel slightly sick. My sister has met several of the royals through her work - largely dull and quite rude in her opinion queen included.

trufflesnout · 21/09/2014 22:52

Yy Kerala, if you support the monarchy but wish they would skip Charles and go straight to William, then I'm afraid you are a republican.

onelastfling · 21/09/2014 22:54

The Queen is frigging Amazing.

Anybody that wants to get rid of her needs their head read.

onelastfling · 21/09/2014 22:57

n fact, I avoided buckingham palace....boring and tacky!

Like we care.

mimishimmi · 21/09/2014 22:59

YABU. The royalty, through income on their assets, are hardly spongers on the public teat. They are a quintessential part of Britain (and Europe generally) I think.

onelastfling · 21/09/2014 23:02

I do like the Royals but I think the Queen is too old for a public duty role now .

Sister nancy, are you for real?

The Queen carries out her duties perfectly.

In fact, it always amazes me, how a lady of her age manages to walk up some steps, lays a wreath, walks back down those steps backwards, in high heels, ALL without missing a step.

And you say she is too old? Shock

tattyteddy · 21/09/2014 23:10

Totally with you OP, Viva la republic! I think after the queen goes it stops there. The royal family are completely out of touch with the rest of the country and are pointless. The hysteria over Kate Middleton having a baby was ridiculous and I think they are no more than posh celebrities!

onelastfling · 21/09/2014 23:15

Who wants a boring, police state repbublic (not me) and not most of the other UK inhabitants.

trufflesnout · 21/09/2014 23:19

Do you know what a police state is onelast?

onelastfling · 21/09/2014 23:19

Like it or lump it, most of the UNITED kingdom LOVE having a Royal Family.
It's what makes us unique.
Any boring ole state can have a Republic (yawn).
But look at what we have.
Priceless.

onelastfling · 21/09/2014 23:21

trufflesnout, most of the NO voters love the Monarchy.
What you got to say about that, ????????????????
