to feel happy and excited about voting YES!

I am just back from the polling booth and can say that I have never felt so positive about voting. The feeling that my vote is actually counting, rather than being swalowed up as is the case with Westminster voting, is also fantastic.

IMO a yes vote will reinvigorate the whole of Britain and, amongst other things, allow Scotland and England build better relations as equal but interdependent neighbours and allies.

Anyone can use any currency. Why pick the pound? I'm sure there are nicer currencies out there? My home country uses the quetzal (it's our national bird), been thinking that the haggis could be an interesting currency. One haggis, two haggi etc.

StatisticallyChallenged · 18/09/2014 20:46

Yes, but if you peg or use someone else's currency unilaterally you need significant reserves which we do not have.

Fontella · 18/09/2014 20:49

Fontella, we won't have no currency - we can use the pound! Why don't people understand this.

Findogask It's you who doesn't understand I'm afraid. Yes you can 'use the pound' or course you can. You can 'use the dollar' if you want. But the markets won't touch you with a barge pole if you do. Not only that but Oli Rehn (EU Commissioner) has said not only is it impossible it would scupper any chance of Scotland ever joining the EU.

Scotland would be a financial pariah without a Currency Union with the UK and in order to get one, you'd have to give up significant areas of your newly won sovereignty on banking, taxation and spending. In other words - you aren't independent.

Your only option would be Sterlingisation but I doubt Scotland could afford it.

Scotland is basically up shit creek without a paddle on the currency issue I'm afraid.

Well, 'Yes-ers' you've been sold a pup,and a pretty mangy one at that; not the bouncy, tail wagging, best in show, Salmond fantasy hound. If hasn't been put down today, which would have been the humane solution, pretty soon you'll discover it's grown into a great big shedding, flea-ridden, sickly, yet voraciously hungry, mutt. It will eat you out of house and home destroy your best furniture and leave huge piles of crap for you to clean up. And there will be no dog friendly charity to take it off your hands, you'll be stuck with it and it's enormous Vet's fees that far outstretch your income. No credit card, no bank loan will be on hand to help out and when you give up and want to put it out of it's misery, you'll discover it's with you for all eternity and you're stuck with it.

You're not going to get the pound and the EU are very reluctant to give the euro to Scotland. All you will be left with is 'smackeroonies'... I say this in the nicest way.

MissBeans · 18/09/2014 21:24

Christ on a bike! The English are not all bad you know. I'm not even British and I was once in disbelief as to why Scotland is not already independent. However, after living there for a few years & seeing for myself that it decidedly unique to the rest if the isles, but at the same time part of a once great empire that built the modern world! The Scots need to get over their inferiority complex!

MissBeans · 18/09/2014 21:25

Excuse typos, have had one too many vinos this night...

HaroldLloyd · 18/09/2014 21:27

I really can't see them back tracking on the currency union.

ChelsyHandy · 18/09/2014 21:31

Salmond's faithful foot soldiers hard at work on this thread I see! To be honest, I do wonder if their way to achieve independence would actually be to either drive out everyone who disagrees with them or silence them!

Greengrow · 18/09/2014 21:37

There has been very biased coverage in England, so biased I hope the Yes vote wins. Arguably it will be constitutionally simpler if Scotland goes than if she stays. We certainly will be insisting on parity over student fees and prescription charges if the Scots stay.

StatisticallyChallenged · 18/09/2014 21:37

63% of the rUK are opposed to currency union. All 3 parties openly opposed to currency union. Moody's saying it would be a credit rating negative event for the rUK to enter into. Asymmetric relationship due to relative sizes of economies means that it would be a one way bet for rUK as they could bail Scotland out but it couldn't be reciprocated. After the failure of fiscal restrictions in the Eurozone the only way they would consider it would be with incredibly strict limitations. Credit Suisse reckons that would include running a surplus. We have a bit fat deficit right not. Not such a great option. Oh, and to get in to the EU you kind of need your own central bank.

Sterlingisation - tied to a country who would be making economic decisions re interests rates and money supply without any consideration whatsoever for Scotland's needs. Particularly bad when your economies diverge. Only way to make it work in terms of financial services, markets, stability is to have reserves. Very big reserves - at least 25% of GDP which is about £32bn and we'd probably need more. Oh, and you'd have no central bank - see above.

StatisticallyChallenged · 18/09/2014 21:39

Greengrow those issues are devolved. They come from our share of spending. If you want free tuition fees, campaign for them in England rather than campaigning against Scotland.

GertrudeBell · 18/09/2014 21:40

Bye then.

Well, that's quite an impressive little tale you recital, lovely metaphorical prose
You must be quite pleased with it.

IamHelenaJustina · 18/09/2014 21:48

I'm glad that the Op is excited about voting but oh dear no - not a good use of that vote. If the majority votes yes then it will be a very sad day for Scots and in particular those at the bottom of the economic pile because they will suffer most. It's inevitable.

Iggi999 · 18/09/2014 21:57

I believe the exact opposite to be the case. The poorest will suffer most under a continuing WM government.

Coffeethrowtrampbitch · 18/09/2014 22:02

Yes op. I was happy to vote Yes.

Polls are closed now, I wonder what tomorrow will bring?

MissBeans · 18/09/2014 22:12

I hope to God it's no!

StatisticallyChallenged · 18/09/2014 22:41

Yougov poll just released - done AFTER people had voted - 54% no.
