To think that a Yes vote means that England and Wales will be condemned to Tory Rule forever more..?

Am starting to feel a bit worried as Scotland seems much more left wing than England. So if they vote Yes, are the rest of us going to be forced to live under Tory ( or a Tory/UKIP Government) forever more..?

If so, I'm bloody moving to Scotland!

I was just saying the exact same thing to dp!

Andrewofgg · 17/09/2014 23:28

Probably. It's called democracy .

Even if there is a No vote and the Scots get Devo-max it will probably mean the Scots MPs not voting on Bills for England so that a Labour government will be restricted in what it can do if the Conservatives have a majority of the English seats. Also democracy.

exexpat · 17/09/2014 23:31

Not necessarily, according to Fullfact (they fact-check claims in the media): fullfact.org/scotland/permanent_conservative_majority_scottish_independence-35134

I'm sure it will help the Tories at least a bit, but it's not as clear-cut as some people have been saying.

Silverdaisy · 17/09/2014 23:34

Even if it's a no vote, the likelihood of Tory or ukip is still high.

Tinkerball · 18/09/2014 00:09

Maybe

PansOtherPeople · 18/09/2014 00:14

well yes. If England vote Tory...that's what happens. It IS called democracy?

Hurr1cane · 18/09/2014 00:17

It's hardly a democracy in England though. More like you get to vote in which party dictates you.

Fanjango · 18/09/2014 00:21

Or you vote for a different party and thanks to our voting system still get a Tory MP. Democracy? Not really Hmm

Hurr1cane · 18/09/2014 00:38

I'm pretty sure the lib dems have cut most of their ties now with the voters.

Thebodyloveschocolateandwine · 18/09/2014 00:44

See all I can think if is it's either Alex Sammons smug fat face falling or else it's David Cameron's.

It's a gift that keeps on giving.

OldLadyKnowsSomething · 18/09/2014 00:51

England and Wales will be "condemned" to whatever gvt they elect; if that's Tory, that's Tory. It would be massively undemocratic were Scotland in some way to rush in and "save" E&W from their own democratic decisions. Hmm

Hurr1cane · 18/09/2014 00:58

Hmm, but I want to keep Scotland, because that's where most of the left wing people seem to be, and I don't want to be left in a country without them Sad

But if I was in Scotland, I would probably want out of the UK.

Might move there.

Hurr1cane · 18/09/2014 00:58

.

HopeClearwater · 18/09/2014 01:11

It's the North of England which will suffer. Look at the map - most of England is blue and they dictate what happens in the north. Policies are often made for London and the SE, the Tory heartlands, and they don't always do other areas any good at all. Look at the percentage cuts in spending for English councils. Labour-run ones eg Liverpool, suffer disproportionately more.

DaughterDilemma · 18/09/2014 01:16

OP yes, which is why Gordon Brown is up there talking gibberish on a regular basis. The labour party would be decimated.

ElephantsNeverForgive · 18/09/2014 01:21

"Please Sir, can all of us West of Oxford declare independence from London"

And if Wales declares independence, can Monmouth and the Welsh borderlands join us as Cardiff frequently pisses them off too.

Thebodyloveschocolateandwine · 18/09/2014 01:22

I think true labour died with john smith anyway.

The rest since, Blaire, brown and Miliband are just career politicians who choose the Labour Party.

YeGodsAndLittleFishes · 18/09/2014 01:33

I agree Thebody.

Or we could have more 'home rule' for all regions.

Perhaps this will be the dawn of a new age for us all, with new political parties with different ideas. We've got UKIP and lots of far right parties to choose from, it's time there was an alternative to Labour. Or something quite different from any political party we've had before.

Toadinthehole · 18/09/2014 01:46

A Yes vote could mean the opposite actually.

The Tories will be discredited. They will shed support to UKIP. Which means a split right-wing vote and constituencies electing more Labour candidates.

squoosh · 18/09/2014 02:16

In my experience it's a bit of a myth that Scotland is left wing.

LatteLoverLovesLattes · 18/09/2014 02:21

Maybe what we really need is the Mumsnet United Party.

Grin
Scarletohello · 18/09/2014 07:53

Yes a Mumsnet Party would be great! Smile

EverythingCounts · 18/09/2014 07:57

This is what worries me and why I am selfishly hoping for a No vote. It's as Hope says - I am in the north and it's bad enough here already under the Coalition.

saoirse31 · 18/09/2014 08:01

What you need is to move to a fairer more representative voting system rather than the first past the post. Have a look at for example the proportional representation used by Ireland, or list systems etc much fairer.
