To think the Scottish tourism industry is going to be hugely affected by the referendum, whatever the outcome

Just been reading some of the indyref threads and it made me think about the affect on Scottish tourism, mainly from English tourists,

I know it's only one factor in the grand scheme of things but it seems damned to me whatever the result.

There is such an anti English sentiment at the moment I don't think many English people will be rushing up there for a holiday will they?

I have loads of family in both NI and the Republic, so yeah, never been made to feel uncomfortable. Ever. In either country.

ReallyTired · 17/09/2014 22:28

I am sure that the majority of Scots are not racists or anti english. However is scotland as a country doing enough to prevent racial incidents through education or policing. The MET was described as "Insitutionally Racist" over its handling of the Stephen Lawerence murder as they did not make enough effort to find evidence to convict the killers.

This Scotsman article says that a survey shows that 1 in 3 English people living in Scotland have experienced racism. I find this shocking.

Being insitutionally racist can be standing by and doing nothing when racism happens.

Marmiteandjamislush · 17/09/2014 22:28

Honey, I am getting heartily sick of hearing about this supposed desire of ALL English people for NO vote too. As I said please don't deny or minimise the experiences of myself and others.

LovleyRitaMeterMaid · 17/09/2014 22:29

Marmite are you Westminster? Are you that archaic political system that doesn't meet the needs of Scotland? Are you the house of lords?

No?

Then it's not personal.

There's bugger all wrong with England and the English people. I wish you well, well keep in touch and I wish you would find the backbone and demand better representation. That's what we're doing.

PhaedraIsMyName · 17/09/2014 22:29

If the media are giving the impression that the Yes supporters are anti-English I hope people will see over time that it simply isn't true.

I suppose my (very Scottish Doric speaking)little brother in Aberdeenshire must be imagining things? That's not what he told me. He sounded pretty disgusted and it's one, of many reasons, he and his wife moved from Yes to No.

Likeaninjanow · 17/09/2014 22:30

Excellent! Maybe I should cancel my Trip to London & change it to Dublin. You're right - I didn't get any anti-scottish feeling there before. Unlike England.

On no wait...that's ridiculous. England is a big place, and that anti-scottish stuff can't be everywhere.

Bigoleheffer · 17/09/2014 22:30

I can't be arsed reading the whole thread, I clearly get the gist. Been to Scotland this year and loads over my lifetime. I love Scotland. My experience has always been positive. I've loved watching all the extra tv about Scotland this year. I hope they vote no. I bloody loves Scotland I do! And Ireland, stunning country, Wales not so much Grin

Secretblackandmidnighthag · 17/09/2014 22:31

My family are Doric speaking and voting yes and not anti English at all. Am I lying?

Alisvolatpropiis · 17/09/2014 22:32

Rude that is Big. You're going on my spreadsheet Grin

Likeaninjanow · 17/09/2014 22:32

You'll be made very welcome bifoleheffer, if you decide to visit again!

LovleyRitaMeterMaid · 17/09/2014 22:33

I went to Wales for the first time this year. Stunning. Can't wait to go back.

Marmiteandjamislush · 17/09/2014 22:34

PhaedraIsMyName · 17/09/2014 22:35

I'm sure you're not. I'm also sure my little brother isn't lying. He mentioned he'd been discussing it at work. Most were no but he said the loudest and most vocal were Yes on that basis.

And 4 months' ago he was a Yes.

Marmiteandjamislush · 17/09/2014 22:36

Like, if you want to do that do it. For the last time I have said there are good and bad apples in both camps. I just think it should be accepted that some English people will not want to visit or spend money in Scotland because they have experienced hostility. Without being treated like simple minded soft pricks.

TheBogQueen · 17/09/2014 22:36

I've never been to Wales .

Is it nice?

Bigoleheffer · 17/09/2014 22:37

Haha, tongue firmly in cheek Alis. I've been walking in mumbles, I knows it's gorgeousGrin

I can't think anywhere lovelier than Scotland though. I'm not worried about their tourist industry. I'm sure it will be just fine.

PhaedraIsMyName · 17/09/2014 22:38

And I have not made any attempt to persuade him. We hadn't talked about it for months. Our mother who actually was an SNP member died earlier this year. He was far closer to her than me so it would have been inappropriate to use my influence against her.

holdyourown · 17/09/2014 22:39

I disagree that there's no anti-english sentiment, sadly.
I hope lovelyrita that you do end up with better representation and a fairer political system (if the vote is yes) but I think you'll find that similar problems or rather just different new ones will still exist in terms of politics

Likeaninjanow · 17/09/2014 22:39

And I'm saying they've been unfortunate, but no more so than some scottish people visiting England.

But anyway...I won't change my trip. I know there are also lovely people on England. Just as there are in scotland.

LovleyRitaMeterMaid · 17/09/2014 22:39

It were lovely! Do you know I can't even remember where we were, we just drove in and found a campsite for a few nights.

I couldn't pronounce the name of it if I tried. Didn't even have to show my passport!

TheBogQueen · 17/09/2014 22:40

Reallytired - it's really not the same as the sort of racism black people experienced (and still experience) in London. Not even close.

Sometimes people are rude to you because you are English. And that's about it. These people are pricks.

Alisvolatpropiis · 17/09/2014 22:40

I'll take you off my spreadsheet in that case Big, I'm easily appeased.

TBQ

There's a lot to like in Wales. West Wales is an all round gorgeous area to visit, particularly coastal areas.

wafflyversatile · 17/09/2014 22:42

Most of my English friends, and most of my friends are English, and workmates are either hoping for a yes vote or wish Scotland well whatever the vote is. Many are hoping the events in Scotland will rile up some action south of the border. My family will be voting a mixture of yes and no and there's no problem.

It's only on here I see any vitriol. That's my experience.

honeyroastedcashews · 17/09/2014 22:43

Erm, I heard you the first time Marmite ;) Am not even remotely "minimising the experience of yourself or others" but rather telling you how it is up here where we live (in good old doric speaking Aberdeenshire funnily enough) Nobody's denying bigotry against various groups exists in some shape or form - that would be stupid, it exists everywhere - but perhaps the fact that myself and other Scottish people on here are seeking to reassure you and others that anti-English sentiment is very much in the minority in our experience could be seen as a positive rather than "minimising."

Not sure where your "supposed desire of ALL English people for NO vote" bit comes from to be fair - I know you didn't get that from my post, and that's not something I've heard bandied about up here so perhaps there's some reassurance to offer on that front too. My English friends are a good old mix of YES and NO supporters, just like my Scottish ones.
