To think the Scottish tourism industry is going to be hugely affected by the referendum, whatever the outcome

Just been reading some of the indyref threads and it made me think about the affect on Scottish tourism, mainly from English tourists,

I know it's only one factor in the grand scheme of things but it seems damned to me whatever the result.

There is such an anti English sentiment at the moment I don't think many English people will be rushing up there for a holiday will they?

I totally am not wanting to start an argument though.

I do think it's sad if English people take the independence movement personally and feel unwelcome here, as I genuinely don't think it's about that.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 17/09/2014 21:58

Well, start an English independence movement. Seriously

Marmiteandjamislush · 17/09/2014 21:58

Noones said they hate me, but there has been hate of the English expressed, whether you like it or not. Why should we / would we risk the hassel?

Marmiteandjamislush · 17/09/2014 22:01

See thing is fanjo, notions and symbols of 'Englishness' have been hijacked by racists. People can't separate the the two. You could be a sky blue pink jelly baby and be English if you wanted, but nobody gets it so there would be no support.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 17/09/2014 22:02

I don't know anyone voting yes due to a belief in a great Scootish identity either though, it's just about trying to make better rules

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 17/09/2014 22:02

Or even Scottish

ReallyTired · 17/09/2014 22:03

londonrach Wed 17-Sep-14 10:23:27 mentions a 6 year old at school being bullied at school for being English. Surely that is outright racism. Racial bullying often goes hand in hand with insituational racsim. Ie. the school cannot be bothered to take the steps to prevent racism happening

"
That isn't racism. English people are not a race."

That is a belittling someone's experience and denying that racism in scotland exists.

In the 1950s there were lots of advertisments for rental properties or employement that said "no blacks, no irish". In England it is considered racism to refuse to consider an irish tenant or to refuse to consider a black tenant. Surely it is as much against the law to discriminate against an English person as an Irish person.

This link from the scotsman itself shows that the majority of scots are not racist, but I feel that scotland is not doing enough to prevent racism in schools.

At least there is some hope as Rangers has given this little english boy who was punched by a scottish thug some free tickets. They have also said that if they find out who punched the little boy the attacker will be banned from Rangers football matches for life.

Marmiteandjamislush · 17/09/2014 22:04

But you need pride, in the thing to gather momentum, I think. We don't have that because of the old fashioned connotations.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 17/09/2014 22:05

Kids bully for any reason though. Anything different

Roonerspism · 17/09/2014 22:05

I'm not sure if YABU or not.

But I am ashamed at these kind of reports and others. This isn't my Scotland and its welcoming people. It's a tiny minority feeding off referendum frenzy.

I pray it dies down as fast as it sprung and your friends give us another chance to welcome them.

TheBogQueen · 17/09/2014 22:07

Blimey

Have you ever been to a rangers match? That kid will certainly learn a lot about bigotry.

Marmiteandjamislush · 17/09/2014 22:08

But those examples are racist bullying Fanjo, why try to deny it. Yes kids pick on difference, but this a particular kind of difference and shows why people from England have and do feel nervy in Scotland.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 17/09/2014 22:08

I thought rangers favs were unionist

Secretblackandmidnighthag · 17/09/2014 22:10

Oh ffs. My friend got threatened at a rangers match as a 16 year old girl. My boyfriend got punched in the face at a rangers match, also age 16 because he was supporting the other team. Both Scottish. Does my anecdata win?

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 17/09/2014 22:10

Not denying it. Just not agreeing it's necessarily indicative of widespread anti English feeling here.

I was bullied for wearing glasses..do all Scots hate glasses wearers? I don't think so.

TheBogQueen · 17/09/2014 22:12

Well largely unionist - although there is support for independence . But Yes the crowd is usually festooned with union flags and worse imagery.

Likeaninjanow · 17/09/2014 22:12

But lots of scottish people face the same inEmgland. Maybe we're just more tolerant...we realise the whole country isn't like that.

In fact...that makes us the opposite of racist.

Likeaninjanow · 17/09/2014 22:13

In England

Madeyemoodysmum · 17/09/2014 22:13

I always knew the Scots hated the English but I thought it was in a fun sporting kind of way. Now I'm not sure.
I'm sure half the population are fine but the other half. Well that's a lot of English haters.

I'm not sure I want to give them my money at this moment in time. That'sway we are tthinking Cardiff or an English city over Edinburgh

Likeaninjanow · 17/09/2014 22:14

Oh for goodness sake! Half the country is not anti-English!!

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 17/09/2014 22:15

What's all this 'give THEM my money' nonsense?

Seems like lots of bigotry disguised as being opposed to bigotry tbh.

TheBogQueen · 17/09/2014 22:16

I'm English and I don't actually think anti english feeling is that much if a big deal in scotland compared to other types of prejudice . But I have been told I am minimising and victim blaming fir expressing that view in the past.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 17/09/2014 22:17

People on here are saying nicely they have no beef with the English.

But getting repeatedly told yes we have and we are all the same.

Very sad

wafflyversatile · 17/09/2014 22:17

How ridiculous. Yes =/= English hating. FFS.

sleepyhead · 17/09/2014 22:17
