To think the Scottish tourism industry is going to be hugely affected by the referendum, whatever the outcome

Just been reading some of the indyref threads and it made me think about the affect on Scottish tourism, mainly from English tourists,

I know it's only one factor in the grand scheme of things but it seems damned to me whatever the result.

There is such an anti English sentiment at the moment I don't think many English people will be rushing up there for a holiday will they?

Marmite I didn't say no one had.

I said the general desire for independence is about how to run Scotland, not about any anti English feelings.

EarthWindFire · 17/09/2014 21:31

Earth Do not believe everything in the media.

Errr I have already said I don't.

sleepyhead · 17/09/2014 21:31

Like I said further down the thread, dh gets called a Jock cunt and is told that they want to speak to a proper English speaker roughly once a week. It's not the same person, it's a different person every time.

But that's because they're arseholes and we don't make inferences about the character of English people based on that. I don't think, gosh better not go to England for my holidays in case someone says they can't understand me because I'm a Jock cunt.

Mind you, it's not nearly as bad as the abuse the Asian staff get, or the sexual harassment that the female staff get. There are some really grim people in every part of the UK.

Secretblackandmidnighthag · 17/09/2014 21:31

I mean, I understand no one going to Scotland at this time of year. Not when we're building our Wickermen. Makes sense.

Numanoid · 17/09/2014 21:32

Dumfriesshire is nice Elizabeth, hope you enjoy it! I've only been to the Dumfries and Galloway area once, makes me think I should really visit more of Scotland myself (though I have been trying to over the past couple of years).

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 17/09/2014 21:32

People changing their minds about holidaying here due to the referendum are completely making it all about them when it's just about the Scottish people wanting to be self governing though.

wafflyversatile · 17/09/2014 21:34

Marmite, you had a horrible experience in Scotland. No one is denying that some people have had horrible experiences there or anywhere. People can be nasty bullying pricks. Everywhere. That doesn't mean that the media doesn't sometimes exaggerate or downplay things that happen for their own purposes sometimes.

You shared your experience and others have shared their experience of not encountering anti-English sentiment. Both experiences are valid.

Likeaninjanow · 17/09/2014 21:35

Genuinely interested...did England see a significant drop in tourism after the riots? Those were much more violent than anything in scotland at the moment.

wafflyversatile · 17/09/2014 21:36

Quite, Fanjo.

Tomorrow the people of Scotland will vote on independence, not on the SNP, not on hating the English, not on being in the EU or not, on whether they want to be governed from Edinburgh or London. That is all. Whatever people voting yes might be hoping for. That is all they are getting the option of.

Marmiteandjamislush · 17/09/2014 21:37

I've said that myself Waffle, twice.

Secretblackandmidnighthag · 17/09/2014 21:40

Agreed, waffly!

Marmiteandjamislush · 17/09/2014 21:42

How Fanjo? Oh yes was forgetting, English people can't have any opinion otherwise they just want to keep Scotland in it's place Hmm no has said anything about self determination, just that the atomsphere in the country will alter their decision making and choices. They are allowed to express their views, especially when asked by a thread, Just as Scottish people will tomorrow. Nobody is making it about them.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 17/09/2014 21:44

They are if they think they can't go to scotland because people must be hostile if voting for independence

BookABooSue · 17/09/2014 21:44

It's such a shame that some personal anecdotes and exaggerated press may stop some MNers from visiting Scotland on holiday. We're lucky to have an amazingly beautiful country with cities stuffed with stunning architecture, exciting museums, a thriving food and drink industry, and a varied cultural calendar. It's a pity that some people are going to miss out on that for a while but it will all still be here when the hype regarding the referendum has fallen away.

Hoppinggreen · 17/09/2014 21:44

My Dh travels all over the world for business and the only place he has been told to go home and called an English Bastard is Scotland!!
We won't be going to Scotland whatever the result - wouldn't mind but he's actually German!

Secretblackandmidnighthag · 17/09/2014 21:45

Marmite, that's exactly what they're doing. Not sure how you can't see that.

Marmiteandjamislush · 17/09/2014 21:48

Nobody has said that though, they have commented on an increase in hostility which has affected their desire to travel there. Some of the rhetoric is vile as is some minority behaviour. If you want independence, equally, you can't tell us how to feel about it. We are a separate state from you, just as you are from us.

Marmiteandjamislush · 17/09/2014 21:49

Sorry I don't see it.

Likeaninjanow · 17/09/2014 21:49

And I travel all over the world hopping, and am welcomed everywhere. Have only seen anti-scottish behaviour in England.

I realise that's just a minority view though, and still visit.

Marmiteandjamislush · 17/09/2014 21:50

The question was asked and answers given. Just because it's not a palatable answer doesn't make it wrong.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 17/09/2014 21:51

Why so touchy?

Likeaninjanow · 17/09/2014 21:52

Still wondering if there was a drop in tourism after the riots on England... Or threads from scottish people saying they weren't going there because of the behaviour...

TheBogQueen · 17/09/2014 21:52

I think in the event of a Yes vote, people will be curious and want to visit . There are already loads of tourists in glasgow.

Secretblackandmidnighthag · 17/09/2014 21:53

And fanjo's opinion is that if you think Scotland voting yes to being self governing is a reason to throw a wee strop and say 'that's it, I'm never going there because they hate ME' it's making it about themselves. I agree with her.

Marmiteandjamislush · 17/09/2014 21:56

Because, if you want to know. I'm so frustrated that the English can get bashed and blamed for all the evils of the Union, yet can't have a separate parliament, The Barnett Formula brought in by DC without even asking our opinion, weaker borders all with no time to think or centre when Scotland has had years of internal voting and discussion or express nationalism without being shouted down or poo pooed and there seems to be this believe that we all want to keep Scotland yoked and it just 'aint true. Gets fucking annoying tbh. Don't mean to blow my stack at you. but you did ask.
