To ask what are your opinions on social cocaine use?

I am finding that it is becoming more acceptable to use cocaine socially.

Friends and people that I know take it at weekends, at parties, bars or clubs and sometimes on a night in with friends and a bottle of wine.

These people are teachers, sahms, childcare workers, administrators, financial advisors and social workers so a real mix.

Is it becoming more socially acceptable? Would you have a problem if your friend did it occasionally?

"Cigarettes sold as Asda are hardly supporting the same industries as drugs though, are they."

As I said at least twice on this thread, it is not the fault of the consumer that these substances are illegal and so sold through criminal channels. It is the fault of legislators - the ones who choose political posturing over the advice of those with the knowledge and the experience to actually know this subject.

FlossyMoo · 16/09/2014 15:10

What is wrong with judging the use of an illegal drug?

InSpaceNooneCanHearYouScream · 16/09/2014 15:10

Well
Some of us aren't too keen on drug use Hmm

FyreFly · 16/09/2014 15:13

Then, Cote, perhaps the consumer should stop consuming and spend their energies campaigning for the legalisation of such substances, and until such time as that happens, stop giving money to murderers and slavers.

PetulaGordino · 16/09/2014 15:13

you asked whether people would have a problem with their acquaintances using it and then expect not to get replies containing judgements?

Lj8893 · 16/09/2014 15:15

I hate it. I hate all drug use tbh. I agree though, it is everywhere and i live in a little "naice" country town.
i think it is unacceptable, and i don't like people when its obvious they are on it.

and i say all that as an ex cocaine user. I was young, stupid and quite bluntly, a twat.

ChildrenOfTheDamned · 16/09/2014 15:15

I know a couple of people who both used to use cocaine socially. They saw it as "no big deal". It is a big deal IMO. When they were both using it on a regular basis their lives were in a really bad place and they were both pretty much alcoholics too. Now, I think they both may dabble every now and then but don't use it regularly. Personally it's not something I've ever wanted to try, I have enough trouble just dealing with a wine hangover. I've never tried any kind of drugs and have never felt the need. I think if it is becoming more socially acceptable then that is a very sad thing for our society.

sshroom · 16/09/2014 15:15

That is one person. I could show you pictures of ten more people who have taken it once, twice or occasionally every few months.

DuelingFanjo · 16/09/2014 15:15

The thing is. Lots of otherwise decent people use Cocaine, of course they do.

But the facts are that it's not a healthy thing to do (Just like many things) and it's funding all sorts of terrible things.

Not everyone gives a shit about that but at the very least they should acknowledge the fact that they are doing something that is harmful to themselves and to others so over all it's not a cool or socially acceptable thing to do (Like many other things).

sshroom · 16/09/2014 15:16

Actually what I said is irrelevent. I don't know why I am becoming a spokes person for occasional cocaine use. Really not my intention.

OP posts:
DuelingFanjo · 16/09/2014 15:16

I want to see a picture of someone who has just taken it once please :)

CoteDAzur · 16/09/2014 15:16

"Errrr... actually doing something constructive in your life or doing something active/sporting or travelling... rather than snorting thousands of pounds up your nasal passage. "

What makes you think that recreational drug users don't do anything constructive or active? There were 813,000 cocaine users in the UK as of 2009. The vast majority live productive lives, go to work, etc and party just on the weekend. The only difference is that their one night out per week doesn't involve only alcohol.

Also re "thousands of pounds" - How expensive do you think a couple of lines are? Check out this price list.

As the above sheet shows, street prices have halved in the past 20 years. This answers the OP's question re prevalence - it is obviously much easier to find now than it was in the 1990s.

MiuChoos · 16/09/2014 15:16

All forms of drug taking stink imo - it's an industry which supports crime, can have a negative impact on physical and mental health, and destroys communities. I want no part of it, and would be pretty horrified if any of my friends were taking drugs, even occasionally.

This. Never socially acceptable. Same with weed.

poolomoomon · 16/09/2014 15:17

Cocaine is one of the biggest causes of cardiac arrest in young people. That and that alone is enough of a reason for me never to go near it. I was offered it once when I was 16 and I declined, I might have been stupid then but even I knew not to go near that shit. Also agreed with regards to the supply chain, couldn't live with that sort of thing on my conscience.

Interestingly my best friend who, for as long as we've known each other (15 years!), has always been against drugs recently dropped into conversation that he'd taken some cocaine AND meth on a night out and it was one of the best nights he'd ever had Hmm. It's not the first time he's done it either, he did it last year whilst on holiday in Barcelona. I can't get my head around it, it's put me off him as a person quite a lot and obviously we've been best friends since we were young so it's sad for me to see. He's always professing to be concerned for his health too, preaching to me about how I need to switch to expensive organic beauty products because the usual ones are full of chemicals that will kill me for example and telling me about this expensive vegetable powder he bought that he puts in smoothies every day, hemp milk he shells out for etc. And yet he's perfectly willing to risk his life with that shit 'for a laugh' Hmm, he's also pissed every weekend without fail.

It very quickly becomes addictive too even if it's addictive in a social setting I.e those who need it every time they go on a night out. Agreed with comment on it must be a pretty boring night out if you need this crap to have fun. Works for alcohol too I guess. Some of the best nights I've had were completely sober, just need a good setting and great company.

"Some very judgemental people on this forum"

you are a regular member who name-changed and you don't know this already?

sshroom · 16/09/2014 15:18

Dueling my friend *Jason, a maths teacher from south London. He has only done it once which was four months ago. He hasn't taken it again.

OP posts:
anothercrackatit · 16/09/2014 15:18

It seems to be everywhere among my social circles, I hadn't realised until a new friend offered me some, I've subsequently brought it up with others. Clearly I was seen as too square to include previously!

It is seen as acceptable. I'm shocked by how widespread it is, that and MDMA. I don't agree with it personally but I try not to shove my opinions down others' throats much as I try and fail not to judge religious friends. I think it comes under politics and therefore is a relationship spoiler best not discussed.

DuelingFanjo · 16/09/2014 15:18

Please show me a picture of someone who has only used it once, please...
Even Nigella used it more than once.

CoteDAzur · 16/09/2014 15:19

"perhaps the consumer should stop consuming and spend their energies campaigning for the legalisation of such substances, and until such time as that happens, stop giving money to murderers and slavers."

I don't think that will happen anytime soon.

If they outlawed wine tomorrow, I think I would continue to have a glass of Sancerre with my friends when I feel like it rather than spend years campaigning to change the minds of some narrow-minded patronising do-gooders,

DuelingFanjo · 16/09/2014 15:19

"my friend *Jason, a maths teacher from south London. He has only done it once which was four months ago. He hasn't taken it again."

you said you would show me a picture. I want to see a picture of jason.

Why do you need to mention these professions. We all know that Police and teachers and nurses use it. I know at least 2 nurses who use it. Big deal.

sshroom · 16/09/2014 15:19

Meth for some reason I am really against. Maybe because I have never known anyone who has done it. hmm

OP posts:
Lj8893 · 16/09/2014 15:20

I don't know anyone who has ever used it once.

i know lots of people who have never used it, and lots of people who have used it several or many times.

sshroom · 16/09/2014 15:20

Why would I show you a picture of someone else. Come on now.

OP posts:
DuelingFanjo · 16/09/2014 15:21

is this Jason?
