to want military action to be taken against ISIS

Am I being unreasonable to want Britain to take military action against ISIS?

I am disgusted that British aid worker hostage David Haines has been murdered by ISIS or ISIL or whatever they wish to call themselves. This is a barbaric act by a savage evil group that are becoming as sinister and threatening as Hitler and the Nazis.

All nations, West and East, North and South, including genuine Islamic nations that agree this dark evil cancer must be stopped, must come together as one to fight and end this horrific movement.

My heart goes out to the families of David Haines and the other murdered hostages and anyone else suffering under this disgusting group. I pray for you all.

I am sure all genuine religious and other groups with civilised and decent values such as Christians, Muslims, Jews, Sikhs, Budhists and others will be appauled at what ISIS is doing and will want an end to this evil acting under the pretence of Islam.

So at the risk of sounding incredibly ignorant, where do you suggest we start bombing? Seeing as ISIS is a group of extremists invading other countries.....

Confused
BillyNotQuiteNoMates · 15/09/2014 21:14

I genuinely have every sympathy with the families of these hostages, especially those who have travelled in order to help rather than for money, however, why are their lives any more valuable than the many thousands of lives lost due to our intervention in the recent past? I want this group stopped as much as the next person, I struggle to see how this is to be achieved without more suffering by innocent people.

I'm not the military expert but all I know is that all it takes for evil to triumph is for the rest of the world to do nothing

tippytappywriter · 15/09/2014 21:17

So killing others in retaliation would not be a barbaric act?

GiveTwoSheets · 15/09/2014 21:18

There is another British aid worker currently next to be threatened with murder, its barbaric and very scary.

I'm hoping behind the scenes military/government have a plan.

DollyMixture99 · 15/09/2014 21:19

YANBU, but quite how they would be able to do it I don't know.

Tipsykisses · 15/09/2014 21:24

I agree with suggest!

Fairylea · 15/09/2014 21:24

As I understand it there is a huge intelligence operation going on in Syria right now, where the hostages are believed to be held and the leader of Isis is said to be based (although that remains to be seen- surely they could be anywhere in theory). I think as gut wrenching as it all is and how awful the whole situation is I think we need to give the intelligence ops a chance - the hostages are supposedly held in a very densely populated area so if they went in and just bombed Syria that would be a war crime in itself.

morerogermore · 15/09/2014 21:33

I think protecting the UK is more important than military action overseas, but like you I am very scared of them.

SuggestmeaUsername · 15/09/2014 21:38

Am not talking about anyone going in bombing all over the place. am not talking about doing anything in retaliation.

Hitler was able to build Germany's military power and annex other countries and carry out barbaric acts because Britain and other countries no longer had the stomach for war understandably after what they had been through in the First World War. Is ISIS any different? It is growing in power and attracting people from our own country and other countries to join it spreading a vile cancer all around the world. It needs to be stopped

OP posts:
SuggestmeaUsername · 15/09/2014 21:42

I think protecting the UK is extremely important too. We have to be more careful who we allow into this country and to find ways to prevent the radicalisation and brainwashing of people here

OP posts:
Fairylea · 15/09/2014 21:42

Of course it needs to be stopped. It is very frightening. I think everyone agrees they need to be stopped. It's just finding the best way of doing that.

I think one of the most worrying things is they still haven't been able to locate the 11 planes isis have apparently stolen. These may be used in some sort of terrorist attack, so some sources have been saying.

The whole thing is just awful. My heart goes out to the families of the hostages.

Fairylea · 15/09/2014 21:43

*by it I mean isis

ouryve · 15/09/2014 21:43

YABU.

It'll fix nothing.

Chapina · 15/09/2014 21:46

As someone who grew up in a (civil) war, I really don't agree. I think that arming the Kurds is the best option, and offering training too. Military intervention does nothing for long term stability, kt have a stable country, you must give Iraq the tools to defend and protect itself. Direct intervention is good short term but is terrible long term.

As well as offering support, weapons and if necessary, air reconnaissance, all only on the terms of the Kurds and Iraqi government for Iraq, not sure what they'd do about Syria (are there representatives which aren't Assad or IS? I'm clueless about this) they need to find the funders and cut off the money supply. IS are very, very rich. They have massive support, from somewhere, most likely some rich ME countries Saudi Arabia or people inside those countries. Tracing them and putting international pressure on the country they're in or the country doing it, which is especially effective for some ME countries especially, who desperately need world recognition and respect to continue to prosper imo, is necessary.

SuggestmeaUsername · 15/09/2014 21:47

I hope that all countries come together to work together to find the best way to stop this. It is very frightening.

My eldest was in school with one of the people who have been in newspapers , she says he was just a regular kid & they are all so so shocked !

It's terrifying !

Tipsykisses · 15/09/2014 21:49

Yep, still agree with you suggest!

SuggestmeaUsername · 15/09/2014 21:49

ouryve It will get worse if the world does nothing

OP posts:
bodhranbae · 15/09/2014 21:49

I fully support military intervention to stop ISIS in its tracks. The coalition of 30 countries including (crucially) 10 from the ME is promising.
Failure to stop them is nothing short of appeasement.

The most disturbing image to date IMO - a young British medical student pictured in her scrubs holding up a severed head in front of a group of young children.

Does the Commons vote against military action in Syria still hold?

I know this scenario was not envisaged when parliament ruled it out, but unless invited in by Assad, presumably we still can't until there is another vote?
