to want military action to be taken against ISIS

Am I being unreasonable to want Britain to take military action against ISIS?

I am disgusted that British aid worker hostage David Haines has been murdered by ISIS or ISIL or whatever they wish to call themselves. This is a barbaric act by a savage evil group that are becoming as sinister and threatening as Hitler and the Nazis.

All nations, West and East, North and South, including genuine Islamic nations that agree this dark evil cancer must be stopped, must come together as one to fight and end this horrific movement.

My heart goes out to the families of David Haines and the other murdered hostages and anyone else suffering under this disgusting group. I pray for you all.

I am sure all genuine religious and other groups with civilised and decent values such as Christians, Muslims, Jews, Sikhs, Budhists and others will be appauled at what ISIS is doing and will want an end to this evil acting under the pretence of Islam.

yabu to care only because a British aid worker has been murdered. What about all the Syrian Christians that have been genocided with the support of the British government? What about the Yazidis, the Alawaites, the Shias? What about the tens of thousands of 'infidel' young women and girls kidnapped and enslaved in rape camps? Why is it only a concern when a few Westerners get beheaded? The British and American governments fully supported the Saudi funded ISIS murderous rampage through Syria, it's only when they threatened the oil supplies by invading Iraq that they changed their support for them. Before that Assad was a brutal terrorist for fighting them while they butchered and raped their way through his country.

Of course the US has a plan for ISIS, they're going to fund their fellow Islamic extremists from al qaeda and various gangs to 'fight' ISIS. Wow. How evil.

It is the Western and Arab policy of supporting the slaughter and rape of minorities in Syria in an attempt to overthrow Assad that is the problem here. ISIS is the product of that. They and other terrorists like them can only be defeated by uniting with governments that are genuinely fighting them; Iran, Syria, Russia and demanding our Arab 'allies' stop funding them. There should be no toleration in Western countries of people who believe in the right to rape, oppress and genocide in the name of their religion and there should be serious consequences for anyone participating in that in any way.

Randomly dumping bombs on peoples heads or arming rival murderous militias won't to anything to help the victims of these terrorists.

ArmyDad · 16/09/2014 07:15

Any western force can easily stop isis in their tracks but we would be in the same situation as we were in Iraq and Afghanistan. Troops in bases and coming under indirect fire and patroling with the constant threat of IEDs. May I also point out that airstrikes aren't random, this isn't the carpet bombing of WW2.

however · 16/09/2014 07:19

Isis won't be stopped in its tracks any more than the Taliban.

Retaliation by the west is exactly what they want, it will allow them to recruit more to their cause.

Over the years, America and its allies have behaved in a way that has paved the way for such extremism. And the tipping point has been and gone, I'm afraid. So if we do nothing, it will get worse. And if we do something it will get worse.

I don't know what the answer is. I do think many innocent people will die over the next god knows how many years.

gordyslovesheep · 16/09/2014 07:24

ISIS isnt a thing OP ...its more of an idea - so difficult to bomb!

but if you watch the news you will see the world IS doing something

however · 16/09/2014 07:26

Yes, you can't bomb an ideology.

Chippednailvarnish · 16/09/2014 08:09

So OP will you be signing up to join the Armed Forces to fully support any military action?

Fairylea · 16/09/2014 08:27

Isis is more than an ideology. It is an actual group, with a leader, that is taking over parts of the middle east. Having said that, there are pockets of the group based everywhere so even if you managed to somehow eradicate one group the others would then grow in support. The problem is extremism itself and the growing support for it. If there wasn't isis there would be something else. But yes of course it's good they are tackling isis.

BBC report on first US air strikes over Iraq in support of the Iraqi government forces

It's one thing in Iraq, where there is an acknowledged and Western-supported government, and much input into its forces and capabilities. But that's not true of Syria, where IS flourished as Assad's control was undermined and nothing has yet come in its place.

noddyholder · 16/09/2014 08:37

Not sure this can be achieved without troops on the ground which would be a blood bath hence the reluctance. Air strikes are a grand gesture but end up killing so many innocents. I don't know what the answer is but tbh whichever way it goes the next few years will be grim.

PinkSparklyElephant · 16/09/2014 09:11

I don't know what the answer is but something has to be done. More and more innocent people are being killed and I really don't see a way to stop it. I do think that any British person who goes to fight for ISIS should never be allowed back into this country.

I see our esteemed Middle East peace envoy is noticeably quiet at the moment...

noddyholder · 16/09/2014 09:16

The thing is there is a huge anti UK extremist movement within our shores and revoking passports will do nothing to stop this. It is bigger than that An antagonistic approach is not worth the risk.

You have people fighting for the ideals of Isis and each group will of course have a leader but it's no more an ' organisation' than al qaeda was/is

ghostland · 16/09/2014 10:57

How do you defeat an ideology that doesn't care about whether the individual has actually done anything bad but will just kill them if they are not Muslim? They are just robotic killing machines. It doesn't matter to them that the journalists and the British hostages were trying to help their fellow Muslims. All that matters to ISIS is that these people were not Muslims and according to their interpretation of the koran they must be killed. You can't negotiate with such people - they are anti-human.

ScarlettlovesRhett · 16/09/2014 11:20

When are you signing up op? I presume you'll be volunteering yourself for the military action you advocate?

It's an awful situation, but I truly believe that if we get involved in a militarily offensive way then we are placing ourselves as the 'bad guys' again for IS propaganda.

It is not our fight, we should carry on providing aid and helping with reconnaissance etc, but to put 'troops on the ground' again would be a huge mistake imho.

Fairylea · 16/09/2014 12:26

The US have started strikes today -

First US strike under new IS plan www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-29214785

It's not everyone is sitting around doing nothing. It's just such a difficult situation. I don't envy anyone having to make the decisions on this.

GoblinLittleOwl · 16/09/2014 14:16

So you will join up and go in as a soldier?
That will give you the right to dictate.

SuggestmeaUsername · 18/09/2014 21:35

Mimishimmi I am not gungho for war. I wish the whole world could just live in peace. I do not want Britain to have to go to war with anyone. However, there is a sinister and growing movement that poses a threat to innocent people in the East and West. If you think the world should do nothing, then evil will triumph. I would not like any of my family to have to go to war but if they were professionals in our military forces then that's what we have a military for. I do not want anyone to die but I think the world has to come together against this evil as they did in the end with Hitler and the nazis

OP posts:
SuggestmeaUsername · 18/09/2014 21:39

GoblinLittleOwl I am not dictating. I am giving my point of view. something we can do while we still have a democracy.

No, am not going to join up as a soldier. We already have a professional military force employed to do this

SuggestmeaUsername · 18/09/2014 21:42

Flyaway I dont just care about the fact a British hostage was killed. My original post offers prayers to anyone who has suffered at the hands of this group.

OP posts:
Alisvolatpropiis · 18/09/2014 21:44

Action is being taken, just not publicly.

SuggestmeaUsername · 18/09/2014 21:45

Gordylovesheep ISIS isnt just an ideaolgy. it is a force made up of tens of thousands of soldiers and has an organised structure and "govt departments".

OP posts:
UncleT · 18/09/2014 21:47

YANBU. This is huge and it has to be stopped decisively and right now. Then we need to deal with the treacherous people who set them up, armed them and funded them to the tune of several billion dollars.

SuggestmeaUsername · 18/09/2014 21:51

Chicaguapa I dont think retaliate is the right word. This is not just one innocent man who has been murdered. There are thousands of innocent men, women and children who have been tortured, raped, murdered at the hands of these savages. This is about the civilised world coming together to stop this evil

OP posts:
Alisvolatpropiis · 18/09/2014 21:53

Action is being taken, there are boots on the ground. It just isn't being publicised.

The army aren't going but the marines are.
