to want military action to be taken against ISIS

Am I being unreasonable to want Britain to take military action against ISIS?

I am disgusted that British aid worker hostage David Haines has been murdered by ISIS or ISIL or whatever they wish to call themselves. This is a barbaric act by a savage evil group that are becoming as sinister and threatening as Hitler and the Nazis.

All nations, West and East, North and South, including genuine Islamic nations that agree this dark evil cancer must be stopped, must come together as one to fight and end this horrific movement.

My heart goes out to the families of David Haines and the other murdered hostages and anyone else suffering under this disgusting group. I pray for you all.

I am sure all genuine religious and other groups with civilised and decent values such as Christians, Muslims, Jews, Sikhs, Budhists and others will be appauled at what ISIS is doing and will want an end to this evil acting under the pretence of Islam.

the last thing the poor bastards who live in Syria need is to have more bombs dropped on them.

maddening · 15/09/2014 21:53

IMO Isis has declared war on us - we are at war whether we think we are or not.

I also don't understand how Syria and Iraq can be considered civil wars when the same parties are involved in both wars ie Isis in Syria and Iraq - surely it becomes an international situation where the same force is attacking 2 countries ?

I don't think Isis can ever exist alongside the rest of the world - I suspect the only way to stop it will be in war - but their aim is to destroy us all - when you listen to what the jihadists want I can't see any other way out. And war will only radicalise more - the trauma that many have grown up with for generations on generation will only fuel that and war will set it alight - I can't see any peaceful end.

The sad thing is that the west has done so much wrong in these areas - which were already ripe with tribal conflicts but we went in and ruled lands badly to our own ends in colonial times, backed tribes and armed them in and after the world wars, took land of people where we had no right and continued to aid tribes to destroy opposing tribes in the Cold War as did Russia eg Afghanistan and then kicked off in the gulf twice - that is a lot of anger, resentment, trauma and meddling but at the same time we can't not fight back just because of history but whatever we do do i just pray we make it out.

bodhranbae that is so awful. I agree with you and the more countries, especially ME countries that join together to end this, the better

I'm Feeling a bit unwell tonight & can't get my head together to post what I'd like to say properly but I feel strongly that this needs dealing with as soon as possible to stop any more bloodshed .

Fairylea · 15/09/2014 21:58

The trouble is that isis are gaining support and blaming the USA and the UK for being terrorists (ironically). So they will use any military action as evidence of our "terrorism" and it could actually strengthen their support.

I find it extremely hard to understand why born and bred British men and women Muslims would join such a group. It goes against the very fibre of the free and westernised society they have grown up in. I think maybe that particular "why" is the question we most need to be asking ourselves.

SuggestmeaUsername · 15/09/2014 21:59

I hope you feel better tomorrow Tipsykisses

It's a bloody mess that's what it is Sad.

Tipsykisses · 15/09/2014 22:06

Thank you suggestmeausername.

SuggestmeaUsername · 15/09/2014 22:07

It is all so complicated and there is no straightforward solution to this. As well as the enemy in a distant land, the enemy is growing at home aswell. I agree Fairylea that as well as fighting this movement, we need to understand more about why this is happening and what can we do better

A bloody mess is a good way of describing it Meglet!

Ah not finished before I posted !!

I will be watching this thread with interest to see how people feel .
We worry that as the boy in Ds school is involved that there may be more in our area who feel as he does .

ArmyDad · 15/09/2014 22:11

I'll be honest I've spent more than enough time in the middle east and I don't want to go back

SuggestmeaUsername · 15/09/2014 22:13

That is the scariest thing about it all Tipsykisses. People are so easily being brainwashed in schools and elsewhere and being turned against our society and the values and culture and everything that we hold dear to us

OP posts:
SuggestmeaUsername · 15/09/2014 22:15

I can understand that ArmyDad. What do you think should be done to stop this?

Fairylea · 15/09/2014 22:17

I think you tube and the Internet have a lot to answer for to be honest. Dd has been learning about 9/11 at school and we you tubed some of the old news videos to watch together. Almost half of the first ones we pulled up were from the "truth" movement where people are trying to say that the USA did it to themselves (!!) and the collapse of the towers were done by controlled explosions! Dd (11) said to me "mum did you know there were bombs in the towers?" - I was like eh??? And then we started talking about it all and I tried to explain about propaganda etc. If an 11 year old is watching all this shit on you tube then that is very dangerous indeed.

You only have to read all the comments under the videos to see so many people are pro extremists. And so young. And the Internet is giving them a voice and a platform.

SuggestmeaUsername · 15/09/2014 22:22

The Nazis brainwashed so many in the 1920s and 1930s with their vile beliefs. They used pamphlets, films, radio, leaflets, all sorts and it worked.

Todays extremist groups are using the internet to do the same thing

mimishimmi · 15/09/2014 22:33

So who do you propose to send to fight? Your son, husband, brother? Thought not. Those most gung-ho for war always assume someone else will be the mugs fighting it...

UrbaneLandlord · 15/09/2014 22:45

One possible course of action that the international community (including the UK) could take is to destroy advancing ISIS units from the air.

That way, at least the Kurds and the rest of Iraq would be protected from further incursions.

My guess is that the caliphate will be unable to form a stable state; and will eventually disappear up their own backside. It's just very sad that they'll take a lot of decent people down with them.

AuntieStella · 15/09/2014 22:47

Not just 'who is going to be put in harm's way' for this fight.

The key question is: what is fighting going to achieve?

Right now swathes of Syria and Iraq are essentiall ungoverned. The 'strongman' dictators were removed, or undermined by the West giving support/succour to the opposition. Is the aim to get these areas under some form of government that will actually be strong an ruthless enough to control/subdue them again? What does a government that strong look like?

Chapina · 15/09/2014 22:58

From experience of a government strong enough to basically quell guerrilla or other fighters, it's a government which goes around killing people for muttering a wording dissent or killing or torturing people if there's even the slightest idea they have weapons (when they don't), whole villages where it's believed fighters could possibly take over or use as a base massacred. Ruthless enough to stop people supporting the fighters or even thinking of going against the government.

chicaguapa · 15/09/2014 23:04

YABU. An innocent man was executed and you want to retaliate by declaring war and killing how many more innocent people? It doesn't make sense. Confused

ouryve · 15/09/2014 23:07

They'll recruit more followers if The West piles in clumsily.

OneInAMillionYou · 15/09/2014 23:18

Given the weaknesses in our current Border Control, I believe this function should be militarised and we should deploy our armed forces here in the UK to prevent any of these barbaric savages coming back from their jihadi pilgrimages.

TheFairyCaravan · 15/09/2014 23:30

I think something needs to be done. I don't think Military action is the right answer yet. It is all a mess, it is very scary and I feel so sad for the families of the people who have been murdered and those who are being held hostage.

As a Military wife and mum I am dreading them sending troops in tbh.

Bulbasaur · 15/09/2014 23:32

The US is sending in drones and troops, Britain better be pulling their weight too. I'm tired of countries ragging on the US for being war mongers, while benefiting from our military efforts. If a country is benefiting from and profiting off the oil, they need to do their fair share to help secure it.
