To ask if you get a Christmas bonus, and if you do how big a percentage of your salary is it?

I found out tonight that my brother gets a whole months salary as a Christmas bonus. When I worked I got absolutely nothing. I always thought that getting nothing was normal. Or is everyone else out there getting loads of Christmas treats from their boss?

I'm a civil servant so don't get a bonus, or a pay rise or a decent pension etc... But that is a whole other thread.

Imagine having a whole extra months wage to buy presents with!

pissedglitter · 12/09/2014 23:20

Retail - I get no bonus (ever)

mameulah · 12/09/2014 23:20

I know! I couldn't believe it!

I don't get anything either :( in my last job we got a few hundred quid at the end of each financial year.

Patrickstarisabadbellend · 12/09/2014 23:20

Retail- I get an extra weeks wage.

HerRoyalNotness · 12/09/2014 23:21

It varies industry and company wise. We work for a large multinational private company and some of them get their entire yearly salary as end of year bonus, VPs get even more. Lower plebs can get 10-15% of salary all the way down to 3% for the lowest of the low. Better than a slap in the face with wet fish

Bulbasaur · 12/09/2014 23:21

Yeah, we got double bonuses at my office when I used to work there. But it was still based on performance and how hard you worked. It wasn't just free money.

mameulah · 12/09/2014 23:21

No bonus in retail? Do you get really good discount as part of your normal package? I always thought that if you worked in retail you were privy to special offers and stuff?

Nope nothing, not even a thank you Sad

No not always. It is a bit of an urban myth.

TortoiseshellSpecs · 12/09/2014 23:25

Public sector, so no bonuses at all for me.

DH gets them (very senior in private company). Not at Xmas though.

WildFlowersAttractBees · 12/09/2014 23:25

I work for myself so no bonus but I do treat myself to a glass of fizz and a new frock! Wink

DH doesn't receive a financial bonus but his boss does give him £500 of M&S vouchers.

WoodliceCollection · 12/09/2014 23:27

Nope. Struggling to even get the standard miniscule incremental rise I am meant to get annually too. I don't think anywhere I've worked has ever had a Christmas bonus, it is not at all standard is it?

WillYouDoTheFandango · 12/09/2014 23:28

Private sector - I used to get a guaranteed 2%, then they switched my contract and slipped in a sneaaky "discretionary" in place of the "guaranteed", which I never noticed.

Funnily enough the director now uses his "discretion" to prevent any of us getting our 2%.

HicDraconis · 12/09/2014 23:32

No bonus. One year I had a treat size mars bar stapled to my payslip.

Last year I had the fun of having to go into work for 5h on Boxing Day (wasn't on call, but was needed). When I tried to claim the additional hours, not only was I not paid for them, I was sent an invoice for the additional tax I hadn't paid for being in work those hours.

Public sector / healthcare.

elQuintoConyo · 12/09/2014 23:34

We get a percentage of all our clients who re-matriculate, we get it at the end of January. This year it was €400.

If we bring in new clients, we get a small finders fee.

I work in Spain; many companies give you 13 or even 14 monthly payments, so double pay in June and double pay in December - but pay peanuts all year round to build it up.

Pico2 · 12/09/2014 23:37

Hic - how can you be taxed for hours you aren't paid for?

ilovesooty · 12/09/2014 23:38

Third sector. £50 sometimes if the company can afford it. Managers don't get anything.

17leftfeet · 12/09/2014 23:39

One year I got £8 (retail management)

Along with a letter saying they hoped it would make for an enjoyable Christmas

Totally made up for working until 8 on Christmas Eve then working from 6am on Boxing Day!

Another year I was given a 4ft cut Christmas tree 3 days before Christmas -I left it at work and it went in the skip along with all the other staff trees

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 12/09/2014 23:41

NHS - once (in the 26 years I've worked for the NHS ) we got £10/head to spend at our Christmas party. (Now we might get a meal brought in by a Rep)

Years ago we were allowed to have our Christmas Party in working hours Shock
Though I was never given the half day for Christmas Shopping that some people got.

I was envious at a house sharer who got an office party in a posh hotel, overnight stay, food, alcohol and a casino night. (They worked in Finance )

CarmineRose1978 · 12/09/2014 23:44

I get a summer bonus, in July (based on the company's fortunes during the last financial year). It's 15% of my salary at my level... Goes up as you climb the corporate ladder.

HattyMonkey · 12/09/2014 23:45

First time ever last year, new job that I started 2 months previously 10%. Had to ask colleagues why there was an envelope on my desk with cash inside. I was incredulous when told it was a bonus Grin

HattyMonkey · 12/09/2014 23:46

10% of my monthly wage, small private firm.

Pyjamaface · 12/09/2014 23:52

I work in a bar and I get £20 from my employer (more favoured members of staff get more) and an even split of the tips - the tip jar is only out for 2 weeks before xmas.

I also get enough drinks bought for me to get nicely tipsy every shift until mid January Grin

I used to be a civil servant so anything is good for me Grin

FlipItDigger · 12/09/2014 23:55

I'm a sahm so no bonus other than wine. DH gets about 10% of his salary as a bonus in May/June time. He's in software and at his last job the bonus was similar and same time of year. It's handy then because once a year we can make any bigger purchases we need.
