To ask if you get a Christmas bonus, and if you do how big a percentage of your salary is it?

I found out tonight that my brother gets a whole months salary as a Christmas bonus. When I worked I got absolutely nothing. I always thought that getting nothing was normal. Or is everyone else out there getting loads of Christmas treats from their boss?

With what I do now, nothing (charity). When I worked in the city an extra month's pay and an extra day off to be taken in the Christmas period. They were generous employers, nice lunches, parties in the boardroom for everyone at Christmas too.

catgirl1976 · 13/09/2014 08:34

Senior staff get £50

Junior staff get £100 - £200. The more junior the more you get. Which I like (though I get the £50)

One year I got £1,000 in cash. That was an awesome year :)

backbystealth · 13/09/2014 08:36

About 1%

I'm on a good salary, I have a great boss, I enjoy my work so I'm not complaining or expecting more.

londonrach · 13/09/2014 08:39

Bonus I work for the nhs. Whats a bonus. If patients give us chocolate that (quiet rightly) has to be shared. Hubby last year got a £50 bonus (private company) but has to work sometimes until 11pm unpaid.

googoodolly · 13/09/2014 13:44

Retail. We get 10% off throughout the year and a few "double discount" days throughout the year. We also get a bonus in February which varies depending on your hours and how well the store has done.

ChubbyKitty · 13/09/2014 13:58

DP gets pretty much the same as googoo, but I (working in the same store but for a different company) get the generous use of his discount card when I go do the shopping.

There's a rewards website we can use but can we register for it? Can we buggery..Hmm

angeltreats · 13/09/2014 14:03

Not a Christmas bonus no, but a bonus when the annual financial results are announced if we've met targets, on a sliding scale based on how well the company has done and what pay grade you are. It works out at about 10% of gross annual salary if we've met targets, could be more or less or none at all but the company has been known to round up to the next increment if we weren't far off.

Also get a nice Christmas party for the whole company in a 5* hotel including accommodation and free bar all night, plus a hamper at Christmas and an Easter egg at Easter.

SteveBrucesNose · 13/09/2014 14:04

I've never had a christmas bonus in 12 years of working. In fact, I've never had any bonus, ever. That's well shit, innit.

littlepeas · 13/09/2014 14:08

In some professions it is just the way pay is structured. Dh has a salary and then gets a bonus at Christmas - it is performance based and can be more than his annual salary, but is typically 50%. I would say this was typical in property and banking, possibly law as well?

HamishBamish · 13/09/2014 14:08

We don't get a Christmas bonus, but we do get a year end one based which has company and personal performance elements. It's never particularly much though. DH has always got really good bonuses. Usually between 15-25% of his salary. I imagine it's higher the more senior you are.

Ericaequites · 13/09/2014 14:21

I give my cleaner an extra week in her last check before Christmas. At work, I used to get an extra week.

BellsUpMyNose · 13/09/2014 15:59

we get sweet fuck all and if we have to work christmas day we only get time and half

TheRealNightsWatch · 13/09/2014 16:00

Ahahahahahahahaha!

I'm a NHS staff nurse. My only Christmas bonus is I get to work over the festive period. Sad

maddening · 13/09/2014 16:35

We get a paid for Xmas party including drinks, tickets to pantomime for families (last year each child got a £50 love to shop voucher this year there will be a donation to charity instead). We get a bonus in January - mine was £500 as it was pro-rata as I had only been there 6mths so would have been £1000 had it been a full year.

eastmidswarwicknightnanny · 13/09/2014 17:52

NHS - nothing at all unless you count having to pay NMC £100/yr for pleasure of doing the job :)

As a maternity night nanny if I have been doing a night nanny job at Xmas I have been given a nice gift.

ArabellaTarantella · 13/09/2014 18:11

I used to get £10 from the Government because I was a Carer getting Carers Allowane. However, since getting my Pension I am still allowed to be a Carer........it's just that I cannot get paid any more because I can't have 2 payments from the Government. So it has been taken away.

Finola1step · 13/09/2014 18:13

Bonus? Pah!

I'm a public sector worker. Lucky to get a below inflation pay increase.

HavingAGoodThink · 13/09/2014 18:32

I'm really lucky compared to some of these experiences, I have a really generous employer. We get vouchers, related to sickness absence, but starting from £900 for no days off down to about £300 for more than a couple of weeks, plus a week's extra pay in our December pay, plus a Christmas buffet lunch on the 23rd and leave straight after (closed Xmas eve, taken out of holiday), plus they normally give us a £20 kitty each for our night out either for taxi home or a drink while we're out. They don't put on a party at Christmas, but they do a summer party instead with catering and a free bar. If we happen to hit big milestones throughout the year we also get bought a bottle of bubbly - it was Bollinger last year!

Like I said, I'm lucky and they're very generous indeed.

Lally112 · 13/09/2014 18:38

we don't get money, we get a turkey and a bottle of whiskey. normally tank the whiskey whilst plucking, gutting and stuffing the bloody turkey Grin

SugarplumKate · 13/09/2014 18:42

I got a small box of chocolates from my boss (charity). I got a voucher from the lovely people in one of the classes I run.

Ha, ha to a monetary bonus! Oh, I got my flu jab reinbursed!

Bellabutterfly2014 · 13/09/2014 18:47

We get £10 a head for a Xmas meal which is better than nothing! I work in retail. As for discounts , we get one but a discount is only any good if you shop there, you need to be in a shop you like, one of my friends works I'm a pet shop gets 50% off and has no pets. If you only work for
Min wage or a little bit more the discounts make a huge difference if you like the stuff!!
My partner however got £1000 last year but in March at the end of financial year and they had option of having it in wages (subject to deductions), donating it to charity or having high st vouchers. He opted for the vouchers then got a letter from tax office as it's a taxable benefit but it was a small amount and the vouchers were very nice.

Letthemtalk · 13/09/2014 18:50

Public sector here too, so no bonus and wouldn't expect/want one either.

DragonReena · 13/09/2014 18:52

I have worked in jobs in the past that pay bonuses. Some were about 10%, others were a couple of hundred pounds. Now I work for a not for profit organisation so no bonuses. We used to get a christmas high street voucher but they scrapped that (and the Christmas party!)

Lamu · 13/09/2014 18:53

DH received a paltry 2.5% of his annual salary bonus the last two years running even though he has completed on multiple deals for the company worth tens of millions. The company he works for is known for being quite tight fisted.

badsurname · 13/09/2014 19:01

Public sector, definitely nothing at christmas. Used to get a Christmas eve as a privilege day but they have even done away with that now. And you have to pay for the Christmas party!
