Income tax raised or lowered by 10p in the new proposals.

Solopower1 · 09/09/2014 09:50

No? Then why was my son told that in an independent Scotland we would abolish the Queen? He was told we would be a socialist republic, rather like Cuba, a continual thorn in the side of the English Tories. (He hates the Tories).

He has heard that the enemies of England would be welcomed by the Scots and be allowed to put their weapons on our soil. (I didn't mention the Cuban missile crisis, obv). He was told that by voting for independence, he would be helping the English by showing them by example what can happen under a socialist government.

Now if the SNP and the Yes campaign don't actually think this, then they should reign in some of their campaigners!

Solopower1 · 09/09/2014 09:51

That was to Weatherall.

WildThong · 09/09/2014 09:52

Such a fast moving thread, some catching up to do.

Just to say Douglas Alexander is laying waste to Blair Jenkins on the live Radio Scotland phone in. It's one of the best, well constructed arguments I have heard so far. (Yes I am biased for No but it's a good debate from both sides all the same)
Worth a listen if you can get it on iplayer

weatherall · 09/09/2014 09:52

Childcare is a gendered issue.

To deny that women disproportionately shoulder the childcare burden is la la land thinking.

Have you never read the continual mumsnet threads about mums who can't afford to work whose partners dont see childcare as something they should pay for.

StatisticallyChallenged · 09/09/2014 09:52

That's appalling Solopower1. Your poor son and what disgusting misinformation.

weatherall · 09/09/2014 09:54

Chocoluvva- there was an event in the Scottish parliament where one of the no more page 3 campaigners was invited to speak.

weatherall · 09/09/2014 09:57

It is true that in the long term an independent Scotland could vote to become a republic. That isn't misinformation.

But that isn't going to happen in 2016 or until AS has long gone.

He will not be president, that was my point.

StatisticallyChallenged · 09/09/2014 09:57

Didn't deny it's a gendered issue, said it's sexist to portray it as a plan for women rather than families. That's not lalaland thinking, it's fact and acknowledgement that a lot could be achieved towards it not being seen as a woman's role if people stopped portraying it that way. You carry on misrepresenting what I say though

weatherall · 09/09/2014 09:58

No one is going to raise or lower income tax by 10%.

We need levers we will actually use!

Weatherall I see you have no comment on my other points. Why doesn't Eck use his existing powers?

I can't think of any reason other than he rants devolution to fail and he's too scared to admit taxes will rise.

PhaedraIsMyName · 09/09/2014 10:04

You also don't know he won't raise tax. You've said before you want that to happen as long of course as it only affects higher earners

Solopower1 · 09/09/2014 10:04

Women's support for Independence on Woman's Hour now.

chocoluvva · 09/09/2014 10:05

10p tax increase/decrease does not equal 10%. It is more than that.

We need levers we will actually use.

Why wouldn't you use the +or- 10p.

weatherall · 09/09/2014 10:06

And what do you mean by 'family'?

Why are you trying to deny that most childcare is done by women, even when in relationships, never mind all the lone parents (90% female)?

I have never heard a man express concern about his ability to go back to work after having a child.

Women's whole lives pivot around this issue.

Read all the threads on mumsnet about women who took time out, which their partner encouraged, who never get back into work they were trained for and experienced in.

The economic cost is BILLIONS.

AnnieHoo · 09/09/2014 10:07

Wildthong re Radio Scotland phone in

Douglas Alexander is very capable, wish he was more to the forefront of the No campaign.

StatisticallyChallenged · 09/09/2014 10:09

Family as in not exclusively a women's issue. Family as in "the people who care for children, whatever their set up is"

Once again, I am not denying childcare is mostly done by women. Read what I said for goodness sake.

weatherall · 09/09/2014 10:12

11 reasons Yes will improve democracy

chocoluvva · 09/09/2014 10:13

My reason for quoting NS at the meeting I attended in July was to point out that the SNP doesn't have any policies for creating more work in Scotland except to lower corporation tax.

Free childcare won't create jobs, except for a few low paid childcare workers.

KateSMumsnet · 09/09/2014 10:13

Hi everyone,

As we mentioned on aprevious thread we're delighted to be hosting a live debate between Alistair Darling and Alex Salmond tomorrow at 1.45 pm. The thread is now up, so please do add your questions here.

LovleyRitaMeterMaid · 09/09/2014 10:15

Re the implementation of the nursery hours increase. I'm fully aware that it wasn't without issue. Individual councils were given the money to roll it out as they saw fit. Some councils didn't even ring fence the money which is shameful.

I'm not saying that it's been perfect.

weatherall · 09/09/2014 10:15

The set up is overwhelmingly:

Man works full time
Woman does most of childcare and housework regardless of employment status.

Lone parents: woman does everything.

We might not want this but that is how the vast majority of families work.

A universal childcare policy will bring greater equality.

What is better together offer ending in terms of equality?

Diddly squat.

StatisticallyChallenged · 09/09/2014 10:15

I give up. Try discussing properly and linking to factual unbiased sources rather than pasting lists and linking to heavily biased materials. You don't answer people's points, you don't acknowledge when you post utter nonsense which is proven to be factually incorrect. You are not helping your cause.

firstchoice · 09/09/2014 10:16

That's my son, on his way into school in Scotland today, being told to: 'Fuck off back to where you came from' by a kid wearing a Yes badge.

(irony is kid moved up from bloody Cheshire 3 months ago. But he has ginger hair and is called Andrew, so I'm guessing there is Scottish blood in him somewhere)

Both my children were born in Scotland, I was married here and have lived here for 25 years.

But, in todays Scotland you can't be racist against the English, you are just expressing your political views Hmm

I have put various examples of the racism my family has experienced over 25 years in Scotland - and it is getting worse - on various threads, only to be told: 'oh, you must bump into lots of bigots then'. Maybe there are a lot of them around (or a lot of them feeling safer to speak out) at present???

It will be WORSE if the Yes vote succeeds.... Sad
