To want English independence

hanwiluk · 07/09/2014 16:09

I am English and all I want say on is England. This will be the third Scottish referendum, the Welsh have had three with another in the pipeline. NI have had two referenda. The English have never had a referendum on England - not one in our 1500 year history. I would vote yes for English independence tomorrow.

You haven't needed one because you were busy acquiring other nations to claim as your own for most of your history wink]

In all seriousness, I think English people are suffering from a national identity crisis at the moment and this needs to be addressed by David Cameron.

DiaDuit · 07/09/2014 16:13

You want england to have Independance from....? Confused

PhaedraIsMyName · 07/09/2014 16:14

What on? The majority in England want to keep the UK.

Ididntseeitsoitdidnthappen · 07/09/2014 16:14

Being English sucks at the moment, everyone hates us!

deakymom · 07/09/2014 16:14

england should have independence from itself its not doing itself any favours at the moment!

PhaedraIsMyName · 07/09/2014 16:15

I wish those living in England did have a say.

CalamityClara · 07/09/2014 16:17

I'm English and love being part of the UK. I totally understand why the Scottish want independence and the very fact you started this thread shows you haven't a Fecking clue, OP.

LumionaMoonsplash · 07/09/2014 16:17

Compared to the empire 200 yrs ago we're virtually independent now. No one loves us Sad. If it would mean fairer things like university fees and prescriptions being the same then yes I'd vote for independence.

Ididntseeitsoitdidnthappen · 07/09/2014 16:18

Have to say I've not loved the sucking up to wales and Scotland with all the freebies (prescriptions and eduction) whilst us English are told to go whistle for them!

amistoopid · 07/09/2014 16:22

I'm from NI, living in England for 20 years with an English DH and English born DCs. I think we are tiny enough our littles isles without breaking up. It makes me really sad actually.

StoorieHoose · 07/09/2014 16:23

Only 10 replies before some moaned about the free prescriptions!!!

Fluffyears · 07/09/2014 16:25

There is no 'sucking up' that is ignorance. Go and learn about it, wakes and Scotland are given a budget each year and their government decide to use it on free prescriptions and education. Your government in Westminster do not. They are not sucking up to us if is simply how our government in holyrood determine the pot should be spent.

StoorieHoose · 07/09/2014 16:27

You do realise there are hundreds of initiatives for training and child development available in England but not in the rest of the UK? That's where your governments spending priorities are Scotland and Wales decided to fund prescriptions instead.

Fluffyears · 07/09/2014 16:28

This is why there is a problem ignorant people who know nothing about how the budgets work. All this 'oh England subsidise Scotland, Wales and NI by paying for prescriptions' we put in more than we get back and what we get back pays for those items. Oh god I'm angry now!!!!

Alisvolatpropiis · 07/09/2014 16:29

Oh god. Not the free prescriptions thing again.

It's as though some people simply want to whine rather than learn about budgets.

WeirdCatLady · 07/09/2014 16:31

I'd merrily live in England rather than the uk or gb. I like England, I'm proud to be english. I'm not saying it's perfect by the way, but I always refer to myself as English rather than british.

JanineStHubbins · 07/09/2014 16:31

Yeah, NI people were SO lucky, with their referendum for a political settlement to end 25 years of conflict. English people are SO hard done by.

HesterShaw · 07/09/2014 16:31

It astonishes me how people can be so ignorant about their own country.

You sound like a Daily Mail commentator - oh I'm sick of subsidising them, oh they hate us, it's so unfair etc etc etc.

Might not a person in the Vale of Glamorgan or Perth get sick of "subsidising" people in Dewsbury or Liverpool? It's called taxation.

OddBoots · 07/09/2014 16:32

How would it work because it wouldn't just impact England. Each nation would get whatever it brings in from taxes and exports (minus some kind of 'UK Tax' for a shared defence) to spend on its own people in a way decided by a national parliament?

Fluffyears · 07/09/2014 16:33

We don't hate people in England we hate the ignorance!! I also hate how people talk about 'English this' and 'English that' when they mean British.
