To want English independence

hanwiluk · 07/09/2014 16:09

I am English and all I want say on is England. This will be the third Scottish referendum, the Welsh have had three with another in the pipeline. NI have had two referenda. The English have never had a referendum on England - not one in our 1500 year history. I would vote yes for English independence tomorrow.

owl not for under 18s and not even £2k for adults - to quote NHS choices

Are braces available on the NHS?
Orthodontic treatment is available free on the NHS for under-18s who need it. Treatment is also available on the NHS at the standard charge for complex dental treatment (just under £200) for adults who need it. However, adults who want orthodontic treatment to fix minor cosmetic problems aren’t eligible for NHS treatment.

www.deadlinenews.co.uk/2011/09/28/childrens-cosmetic-dental-treatment-to-end/
More info here ....there was a bit of a fuss when the charges came in.
As I understand it in England you could have front teeth with a big gap sorted for free for a child -here that wouldn't meet the criteria (I have a DC who will have a gap when they are older and if they want it sorting I will have to pay...)

itsmeitscathy · 07/09/2014 18:54

Lol, nasty Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales for preventing England's independence. Oh wait....

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 07/09/2014 18:59

Why is it OK for someone to describe themselves , Welsh, or Irish, but the minute someone describes themselves as English, they are pounced upon. as either a member of the BNP or a Daily Mail reader.

bodhranbae · 07/09/2014 19:02

FGS we are a mongrel breed - scratch the surface of any family tree and you'll find a complex mish-mash of many ethnicities.

All nationalism is bollocks.

BruthasTortoise · 07/09/2014 19:07

Who do they get pounced on by? People from England are English, people from Scotland are Scottish, Welsh people from Wales. Nobody is disputing that. The only people in the UK who have real difficulty with labels are us in NI - depending on who you speak to we're either Irish, British or Northern Irish - all three labels come with their own difficulties.

OwlCapone · 07/09/2014 19:13

for under-18s who need it

The key is the word "need"

Mine isn't particularly a mish-mash, if my family tree is anything to go by.

Being patriotic isn't bollocks, it is natural and something found world wide.

Nationalism has a very bad name though, because of the connotations it has for racism and xenophobia. The SNP not included, of course. They're very popular and don't appear to have run into those particular issues.

Patriotism is not "natural". It is a very stupid man-made construct.

George Bernard Shaw said that patriotism is a silly conviction that a country is superior to others simply because you were born in it.

"Every miserable fool who has nothing at all of which he can be proud, adopts as a last resource pride in the nation to which he belongs; he is ready and happy to defend all its faults and follies tooth and nail, thus reimbursing himself for his own inferiority.”

Schopenhauer.

Alisvolatpropiis · 07/09/2014 19:30

We could go on for hours talking about all the "stupid man made constructs" we all accept on a day to day basis. There being set hours of the day being one, names being another.

I'm proud to be Welsh, I don't think Wales is superior to other nations. God knows the fact the rest of the world thinks Wales is in England would have robbed me of that particular delusion.

BasketzatDawn · 07/09/2014 19:34

But England already has the power to govern itself, get the government it votes for etc.

Cherrypi · 07/09/2014 19:34

Are we keeping the Isle of Man in this plan?

ShakesBootyFlabWobbles · 07/09/2014 19:54

YABVU

I could only imagine the resentment and bitterness this would cause. I am getting pissed off just reading some of the comments.

Massive expense for not much difference. UK for me.

unlucky83 · 07/09/2014 20:13

OWL -going off at a tangent here - but the definition of 'need' in England is (I have been led to believe ) less than that in Scotland...

SteamTrainsRealAleandOpenFires · 08/09/2014 01:06

But as the Iom isn't a part of the UK, nor a part of the EU. I don't know.

SteamTrainsRealAleandOpenFires · 08/09/2014 01:10

Dammit it, I forgot to mention...wasn't the NE England given the chance to have a "regional government/assembly" and they turned it down?

Applefallingfromthetree2 · 08/09/2014 01:30

An English Parliament is not a bad idea though, with some powers devolved to the regions. I would want to stay in the UK though, and to keep Scotland!

SoonToBeSix · 08/09/2014 01:37

Of course England subsidises Scotland and Wales, it is ignoranct to suggest otherwise.
Each person living in Scotland or Wales has more money spent on them than people in England.

AnnaFiveTowns · 08/09/2014 06:59

Saying you're proud to be any nationality is nonsense. Proud of what exactly? Being born on one patch of rock rather than another patch of rock. Nationalism of any kind makes no sense and leads directly to wars and violence.

I'm English and, yes, I dislike the St George's flag - not because it's inherently racist but because for me, it's been hijacked by a lot of racist, thuggish bigots. The very type that say things like "It's alright for them but we're not even allowed to raise our flag without being called racist".

AnnaFiveTowns · 08/09/2014 07:01

And, yes, as an English person I'd like independence - from Westminster and this corrupt government!

OTheHugeManatee · 08/09/2014 08:10

I would like independence, yes...from the EU Hmm

TheDalek · 08/09/2014 09:03

I'm not proud to be Scottish (the same I'm not proud to have English parents or to not be British or I'm not proud to b European and so on). I LOVE Scotland and my love for Scotland is stronger and more personal than people who aren't Scottish most likely. I am lucky to be from Scotland (and the UK, and a developed country) rather than, eg, Iraq, and to be born now when we have our rights respected in this country etc but I didn't build that society and therefore can't be proud of it. I'm proud of what I have done to build what is a better society, in my opinion, however small, but I can't be proud to be Scottish as I have nothing to be proud of.

sanfairyanne · 08/09/2014 09:13

the north definitely needs independence. i would vote for that.

aderynlas · 08/09/2014 09:17

This thread is starting to remind me of Game of thrones. Wanders off thinking of Jon Snow.

UsedtobeFeckless · 08/09/2014 09:27
