Common household items that are pointless...

Ok, the ruined designer washing up bowl which has popped up all over again has just prompted me to ask…what is the point of having a washing up bowl? We used to have one, then moved house and now don't bother with one. We just use the sink, which, to be honest, is much easier for washing up the dishes. It was a revelation!

What common 'essentials' do most of us have, which actually aren't essential at all?

Dish drainer.

Ornaments.

AgentZigzag · 05/09/2014 22:03

I thought washing up bowls were so you could rinse the stuff off under the tap as you go along?

My spoon rest has never rested a spoon.

ithoughtofitfirst · 05/09/2014 22:05

Draft snake.

PenisesAreNotPink · 05/09/2014 22:06

I use my spoon rest a lot but that's cos I can bung it in the dishwasher after

I've too many teapots and I convince myself I need them but really tea is not evil made in a mug

TryingNotToLaugh · 05/09/2014 22:07

I don't have a washing up bowl.

or a microwave, a tumble trier, a food processor, or a coffee table.

have had in the past, but decided they were a waste of space.

Janethegirl · 05/09/2014 22:08

Don't have washing up bowl. Don't have a dish drainer. Don't have a spoon rest. Am I missing out?

PhaedraIsMyName · 05/09/2014 22:08

About 90% of the stuff sold in Lakeland Plastics.

BOFster · 05/09/2014 22:09

Washing up bowls are essential, I think, just so you can use the tap while dishes are soaking.

I've never understood the point of fabric conditioner.

Scholes34 · 05/09/2014 22:09

Egg separator - why buy one when you just use the egg shells to separate eggs.

londonrach · 05/09/2014 22:09

Yuk to washing up in sink. I love my washing up bowl. It was a treat to me as I do all the washing up. Gets used twice a day... www.design2please.co.uk/joseph-joseph-green-wash-drain-washing-up-bowl-p/85059.htm?gclid=Cj0KEQjwvqWgBRChnMjQ7u7UzOUBEiQAooXvYSf8s01WzWLl56BneWk4X32DuAehRrXDZ1ImF5cV5IQaAi-28P8HAQ

NoTedInTheBed · 05/09/2014 22:10

Bread bin. I never keep my bread in it and it's now become a large, boxy shelf for crap.

MehsMum · 05/09/2014 22:12

VHS video player. We still have one. No idea when it was last used.

PhaedraIsMyName · 05/09/2014 22:15

We have a flat screen monitor , no idea why . It was at one point connected to an ancient desktop pc which went years ago then it was attached to a laptop with a cracked screen. Now it just sits there gathering dust.

thenightsky · 05/09/2014 22:16

MehsMum that's not a common household item. That is an antique Grin

I've got one too.

gincamparidryvermouth · 05/09/2014 22:17

Forks. Use a pointed stick.

thenightsky · 05/09/2014 22:17

DD says bread bin, but she does keep her pasta in it.

thenightsky · 05/09/2014 22:18

bloody Lakeland strawberry hullers. I can work twice as fast using my thumb nail.

wheresthelight · 05/09/2014 22:18

I have a kitchen drawer dedicated to shit I don't need!

but the washing up bowl is essential, how else do you empty the half drunk cups of tea/coffee that materialise at my side half way through the dishes

TryingNotToLaugh · 05/09/2014 22:19

agree with fabric conditioner, but I love my egg separator!

Also agree with bread bin, we keep our bread on it instead of in it for some reason.

Whenever I've had a washing up bowl, my mum buys them for me Hmm, I just find myself having to wash that too or it gets all yacky underneath.

Lj8893 · 05/09/2014 22:22

Right, im being proper thick but why does having a washing up bowl allow you to use the taps?

we have curtains in our dining room which are purely for display purposes.

don't have a dish drainer, agree they are completely unnecessary!

what is a spoon rest?? Never heard of it but i really want one!

SevenZarkSeven · 05/09/2014 22:23

Hmm right yes I have never ever understood the point of washing up bowls and hence have never had one. I remember being in a situation a couple of times where there was one and I was very confused and you end up washing the washing up bowl and what on earth I couldn't get on with it all at all.

There that was interesting.

PumpkinsMummy · 05/09/2014 22:24

I use my washing up bowl, spoon rest, dish drainer and fabric conditioner every day! Isn't it weird that some people find things so useful and others so pointless? My everyday useless things are ummm I'm racking my brains here. It it's not useful or pretty I chuck it out

SevenZarkSeven · 05/09/2014 22:25

I couldn't do without a dish drainer though Shock

fcukip · 05/09/2014 22:25

Pasty crimper
Pepper mill with light

TryingNotToLaugh · 05/09/2014 22:27

We have completely unnecessary cushions on the bed too. Drives us mad never knowing where to put them when we go to bed.
