Common household items that are pointless...

Ok, the ruined designer washing up bowl which has popped up all over again has just prompted me to ask…what is the point of having a washing up bowl? We used to have one, then moved house and now don't bother with one. We just use the sink, which, to be honest, is much easier for washing up the dishes. It was a revelation!

What common 'essentials' do most of us have, which actually aren't essential at all?

garlic press, all the best bit the oil stays in the press.

SevenZarkSeven · 05/09/2014 22:46

Yes egg poaching cup things are rubbish.

I bought a bobble-off in a moment of extreme suggestibility in robert dyas a few years back. It was rubbish. I doubt that it's a "common" household thing though as I imagine most people aren't foolish enough to be sucked in by JML infomercials while in-store.

rockpink · 05/09/2014 22:46

Different knives. One does all the work. I dont need a bread knife or a tomato knife or a fruit knife. I use a steak knife for everything

SevenZarkSeven · 05/09/2014 22:48

Oh oh oh

Anything which promises to give you amazing lovely shiny marvellous bouncy hair.

I have an entire drawer-full of rollers and dryers and flatteners under the bed which never gets opened.

MorrisZapp · 05/09/2014 22:48

Fruit bowls. Actually, I take that back. Mine is great for storing my keys, gloves, Vaseline and DS's plastic shrapnel.

Kevin Murphy Hydrate Me shampoo/conditioner. Everything else can and should go in the bin.

Pipbin · 05/09/2014 22:53

Microwaves.
I haven't owned one in about 20 years and I value the work top space more than a microwave. Granted, I don't have DC so I might have found one useful for a baby, but I really don't see the need in general cooking.
I said to a work colleague once that I don't own one and she said 'but how do you heat up soup?'

AgentZigzag · 05/09/2014 22:53

Hahaha my fruit bowl has three apples Morris (still in their bag so if/when they go manky I don't have to touch them Wink) and the rest filled up with things-I-find-around-the-house-which-have-nowhere-else-to-go-but-are-too-important-to-lose-in-the-junk-Cupboard of Doom.

SevenZarkSeven · 05/09/2014 22:54

Kevin Murphy Hydrate Me

sounds kind of pervy somehow

but i have googled it thanks Smile

thenightsky · 05/09/2014 22:54

Oh yes seven i bought a bobble remover too. Shite. I find a cheap razer works much better.

SevenZarkSeven · 05/09/2014 22:56

Should I say thanks Kevin Grin

thenightsky I'm glad I'm not the only one who got hypnotised by the lure of the bobble off Grin

Notso · 05/09/2014 22:56

Oh yes to bed cushions, cannot be arsed with them.

Big light in the front room is never used.

Microwave is used once in a blue moon.

Ramekins from GU puddings now my POAS days are over they are useless.

Oven gloves, I have two sets but always just use tea towels.

TryingNotToLaugh · 05/09/2014 22:57

Grin @ Pipbin

your colleague probably owned a soup-maker too.

SevenZarkSeven · 05/09/2014 22:57

The children's laundry baskets

lol

PhaedraIsMyName · 05/09/2014 22:57

Lemon zesters - doesn't a normal grater do the job just as well?

No. Lemon zesters are useful. It'd be finicky using a normal grater.

LadyCelia · 05/09/2014 22:58

Ice cream maker. Why would you bother when the shop down the road sells it ready made, especially at 11pm when you really need it? (anyone want mine? Wedding present, never used...)

VisualiseAHorse · 05/09/2014 22:59

You also use less water with a washing up bowl. And I think the water stays hotter for longer?

How on earth do you live without a dish rack though?

ilovebruuuceandbags · 05/09/2014 23:00

Ahhh, yes, we don't have a dish drainer thingy either now (used to!). I love my garlic crusher though!

Bed cushions. stupid idea.

HauntedNoddyCar · 05/09/2014 23:00

I thought our salt and pepper mills with lights were a bit pointless.
Then I hit my 40s and my eyesight started to go and I'm glad of the help

awsomer · 05/09/2014 23:01

No dish drainer. We used to live in an open plan flat and the kitchen was really on show. Having washing up left out to dry used to make the whole place look really cluttered and messy, so we just got in the habit of drying up and putting everything away. Even though we've moved I still prefer it that way now, it makes the kitchen look extra clean and tidy Smile

BobbyDazzler1 · 05/09/2014 23:02

Washing up bowl uses less water - less waste Hmm

VisualiseAHorse · 05/09/2014 23:02

We don't have a microwave. And never found it an issue, even with a baby (using bottles etc).

Notso · 05/09/2014 23:03

Pipbin my MIL refuses to believe I don't use the microwave much, especially now all my DC are passed weaning.
She was horrified when I relegated it to the utility room. She will fire random foods at me to try and catch me out then when I say I cook it in the oven or on the jobs she tsks at me for wasting gas Hmm

ElephantsNeverForgive · 05/09/2014 23:05

Mines buggered off for the weekend and is trying unsuccessfully to work DD1's iPhone. She's with him, but asleep.

Why when he can make the dark inner recesses of the chip that powers a phone do almonds if clever things, can't he work one, once it's put together??
