I was out litter picking on the pavement outside my house this morning. I picked up mostly cigarette ends. There was very little of anything else. AIBU to wonder why smokers do not consider cigarette ends to be litter?

If you thought about it for a minute you could probably work it out for yourself so YABU.

My friend got an on the spot fine for this.

I agree cigarette butts are disgusting. Worse still us when they are chucked out of moving car windows with no thought for anyone

Bollocks. You bend down, stub it out on the floor, then put it back in the packet until the next bin.

I don't think it is actually. There's a wide variety of things on the market dirt cheap designed for this specific purpose. I smoked for years and never threw a fag end on the pavement.

I once pulled an old man up for this. He was two foot from a bin at the time

I never chucked my butts down when I smoked - I put them out and carried them until I found a bin

I time the few cigarettes I smoke outside to coincide with where I know there's a bin.

Chucking fag ends on the ground is just not on.

That really isn't an excuse to litter tho is it?! Its simple, put the fag end in wherever you want really, just don't litter!

I have no idea why smokers think this is OK. I don't know why they think it's OK to smoke on crowded streets, either.

I always use a bin if available - people actually give me odd looks when I pick my squashed stub off the floor so it's clearly not usual but it is difficult if there's no bin. I'd be very interested in whatever porkpie used as I'd definitely buy something.

Op yanbu really but there doesn't seem to be a simple solution that is widely known about. Maybe there's a marketing opportunity there? !

I agree with MrsCumber. Fag ends are irritating. Dog crap is bloody vile! Fag ends come right down the bottom of my rant list!

My parents have a little thing with a popper where they put them until they find a bin. Not all smokers are littering but I agree it's disgusting... But I hate smoking and the smell of it.

Put a red hot ember into a pocket? I wouldn't want a dirty pocket but smokers ....

I have an idea for Christmas presents and you don't necessarily have to buy them. Products like boot polish come in small screw top tins. Smokers could even carry around snap-shut tins with them. I think cough sweets can be bought in tins. Smokers could carry empty tins of that sort so what about a national effort to give every smoker a used tin to put their fag ends in. It would have to fit into a pocket, of course.

I suppose they'd have to have an explanatory note on them so that the recipient doesn't expect sweets or boot polish.

chewing gum isn't litter either apparently...

I am constantly finding fag ends on my balcony even though I don't smoke. I wonder how my neighbours would like it if I just left sweet papers or bits of half chewed food out on my balcony to blow over onto theirs?

There was a man who used to come and stand every morning at my bus stop, picking up used fag butts and popping them in his pocket for later. Occasionally he would light one and smoke it. He was, I assume, homeless, or at least struggling with self care etc. he could sometimes be a bit shouty but mainly happy if he could find some fag butts. It made me feel horrifically sad he was reduced to doing this. Not really relevant to the aibu but it reminded me of him.
Personally I find dog and cat shit much worse and more annoying. Also fast food packets left outside my door by builders working across the road - at least fag ends are biodegradable!

YANBU, it baffles me why they don't consider them rubbish. while i get that finding somewhere to put a hot cigarette butt might be harder than puting a sweet wrapper in your pocket until you find a bin it really doesnt excuse leaving it for someone else to pick up. If you smoke you need to deal with the inconvenience of it, ditto for dog poo or chewing gum.

We had friends to stay, the wife is totally immaculate as is her house yet she thought it ok to leave her fag butts lying in our garden. I would have provided an ash tray had they asked. She was mortified when DH pulled them up on it, she had clearly never considered fag butts rubbish.

YANBU. It's gross.

No one will admit to it though. Like no one will admit to not picking up their dog's shit.
