Smokers

I was out litter picking on the pavement outside my house this morning. I picked up mostly cigarette ends. There was very little of anything else. AIBU to wonder why smokers do not consider cigarette ends to be litter?

Smoking is disgusting, not smokers. I was in a pub garden on Friday and it was a total haze of smoke, couldn't leave fast enough.

HappyAgainOneDay · 07/09/2014 07:46

WhoKnowsWheretheTimeGoes Smokers are disgusting for paying no attention to the effect their disgusting habit has on others. They also stink themselves probably without realising it but they do. Sit next to one on a bus if they've just put out one (and left the stub on the ground when the bus arrived).

I do love these threads.. they're well amusing. Op the sheer amount of spitting you're doing makes me want to find you and stand outside your house with a 19 pack until they're gone.

I smoke in the street and chuck my dumper in the gutter for the machine if there's no bin and I do use a bin if there is one... outside a&e for eg you can just stand next to a bin... you always seem to smoke more when stuck at a hospital I've noticed. Smile as for feeling shunned if somebody gave me evils and covered their face up as I passed.. I probably wouldn't notice and really wouldn't give a toss tbh Wink

Pub gardens.. meh we've already been kicked out of the pubs... be happy about that instead, you can't have it all ways.

I am now a non smoker, have not smoked a cigarette since last year (still very, very rarely use an e cig around on e a month though, so wouldn't call myself an ex smoker quite yet).

It still fills me with wonder how sanctimonious and obnoxious some non-smokers can be re calling actual real people "disgusting" and "smelly" etc.

People who carry on in that manner are the disgusting ones imo. Disgusting manners, disgustingly limited vocabulary and disgustingly smug.

todayisnottheday · 07/09/2014 10:34

Don't worry about it scarlett it's just another one of those things that are ok to be nasty about. Previously it was anyone fat, then it was smokers, it's now benefit claimants and immigrants. Funnily it always seems to be linked to the government latest poster child of blame. If people are too sheep like to not work it out for themselves they're probably not worth the energy.

Fwiw hate speak is hate speak whatever the object.

Depends on the type of pub you frequent, EastShitDerek

The smell of the toilets and sweat in most pubs is rank and the smell if smoke used to cover it

This sounds like a good reason to find a new pub.

OwlCapone · 07/09/2014 14:45

I remember posting on MN asking whether I was being unreasonable to think the neighbour shouldn't come into my garden to cut his hedge, smoke a fag and then drop the fag end on my lawn. it was amazing how many people said I was unreasonable.

DontstepontheMomeRaths · 07/09/2014 15:01

Fag butts, chewing gum, dog poo anything not cleared up in my book is disgusting.

But then if someone in the car in front is smoking with their window open and I'm stuck in traffic behind, I end up recirculating my air as otherwise I start to smell their smoke in my car which I do not like and if someone lights up in front of me as I walk up the High Street, I cross the road so I do not have to breathe the smoke as I walk behind them.

But my Dad was a heavy smoker growing up and gave no regard for us if we were in the car with him, or anywhere else for that matter. I now actively avoid second hand smoke. I just don't like it. It reminds me of that trapped feeling as a child, breathing in smoke I didn't want to iyswim?

TheCunkOfPhilomena · 07/09/2014 15:03

I need a cigarette after reading this.

TheLovelyBoots · 07/09/2014 15:09

DontstepontheMomeRaths, I totally agree (esp. re: red light smokers).

Inevitably non-smokers are cast as hysterical when it comes to their avoidance of smoke. What smokers seem unwilling to understand is that their second-hand smoke descends like a cloud, sticks in hair/clothes and is carried home. Being outside doesn't really alleviate this phenomena.

Maisyblue · 07/09/2014 15:14

I never really give it much thought, it's just something that's always been there, cigarette butts are just a part of normal life, it doesn't bother me really. What does bother me though is the amount of dog shit littering the pavements. I absolutely detest dog owners who don't pick up after their dogs.

Sunna · 07/09/2014 15:22

It is a disgusting habit. There might be someone smoking first-in-the-queue at our local bus stop. If I join the 'queue', I stand a good few feet away from him/her. Even then air waves bring the smoke / fumes to me for me to breathe. Makes me cough. Thank you, smoker. It's the same in the street. One passes someone walking in the opposite direction and the fumes are there for one to breathe in. I always hold my breath now to pass - or hold a scarf up to my face. Why are they not embarrassed when 'shunned'? Surely that would be an incentive to give up?

Sanctimonious shit like this makes me wish I was a smoker just so I could blow it in your face.

Shunned? Get a grip, OP. There are many more important things going on in the world, in your street, even.

Maisyblue · 07/09/2014 15:22

A few weeks ago we were just about to drive away from a beauty spot lay-by when some people literally opened their doors and threw Chinese takeaway trays with all the leftovers onto the ground and just drove away.Shock Now that horrified me.

Jewels234 · 07/09/2014 15:57

Weirdly, as I walked home this afternoon there was a bin on fire because someone had thrown their cigarette butt in there. That's equally thoughtless as throwing the ends on the ground.
