to think beards and moustaches on men are generally very unattractive and probably unhygenic too?

I really can't stand beards and moustaches on guys, especially the bushy kind, especially when not a very nice colour and especially when on men with a lesser than average amount of hair on the top of their head.... Yuck!

They seem increasingly popular, especially with 20-30 somethings, though. Unfathomable to me. Am I alone in thinking this way? Too old? Too prudish? A bit of designer stubble is the most I can tolerate, but hate how spiky it feels on DH.

My dh has a short, designer stubbly sort of beard and is bloody gorgeous. He looks younger without the beard, but suits it either way. I do think that men should be hairy though and find the idea of 'manscaping' far more unattractive than a beard.

squoosh · 02/09/2014 16:47

When Shane from bloody Boyzone has leapt on the 'Victorian freak show owner' trend you know it's OVER.

littlepeas · 02/09/2014 16:48

There has been an absurdly gorgeous Boden model with a beard in recent catalogues. Men are supposed to have hairy faces.

extremepie · 02/09/2014 16:51

I think it really depends on the man, I know a guy who is only early 30's yet somehow manages to look like a dirty Percy old man the second he grows a moustache for movember but almost every other man looks better with some facial hair in my opinion. I find very few men look attractive completely clean shaven!

kali110 · 02/09/2014 16:52

Nope. My dp has both. :-)

Idontseeanysontarans · 02/09/2014 16:57

On some men it looks really good - David Mitchell for example looks a whole lot better with a beard.
DH used to have a goatee which looked quite funny, he's a fairly dark ginger anyway but his beard was brick red Grin
At the moment he's caught between the beard and cba to shave look. Frankly I wish he'd make his mind up!

CarbeDiem · 02/09/2014 17:04

Yabu.
My Dh has a beard, I love it. It's not long and scraggy though. It's certainly not unhygienic and he probably takes more care of it than I do with the hair on my head.

fatlazymummy · 02/09/2014 17:05

Some men look great with beards, other look better without. I prefer the look of a shorter beard generally though. They do look masculine of course.
They're only unhygenic if they're not looked after properly.
I've got to say, the title seemed a little bit odd to read on this forum, where the consencus seems to be that women should never feel pressurised to remove hair. Surely the same goes for men as well?

Septbaby · 02/09/2014 17:14

YABVVVU my husb has a lucious ginger red beard and I bloody love it! Think Ian GBB Stylee, he also has a shaved head (of his choosing, not genetic). Honestly I love it, he has lobbed it all off before and I felt bereaved, he looks after it incredibly well, combs, shampoos and conditions daily, has some posh beard oil that I bought him for Xmas (it gets so much more love than my stupidly long hair does). Beards are Hot!!! GrinGrin

PiperRose · 02/09/2014 17:17

YABU. Love a beard me.

madhairday · 02/09/2014 17:18

would you call these hygienic?

RadioMusicola · 02/09/2014 17:20

life not bald but he keeps his slightly thinning but not noticeable yet hair very short.

queenofthemountains · 02/09/2014 17:21

My husband stopped shaving about 6 months ago he said he wasn't going to shave again till he had a good day at work ( he works in a very understaffed department). I hated it at first now I love it, he looks amazing. He has long curly brown hair and a short beard the kids and I would hate him to shave it off. I especially love it when we see people who haven't seen him with a beard and long hair, their reaction is priceless. Beards all the way for me now.

JamaicanMeCrazy · 02/09/2014 17:22

Nooooo I love me a good beard Grin

Dp has a big bushy fucker fine growth and I think it's gorgeous.

I wonder though, my dad had a beard/tache when I was a kid, do I like them for that reason? Confused

DownByTheRiverside · 02/09/2014 17:27

YABU to have it as anything other than a personal preference, rather like my hatred of number 1, 2, 3 or 4 haircuts. Many think cool, I think bald thug, it's a prejudice I'm aware of. Except Patrick Stewart, who helps me overcome my problem every time I see or hear him
So beards. There are many lovely well-groomed beards that I like a lot, several of my family and friends are of a hairy persuasion.

lifeafterthebigsmoke · 02/09/2014 17:31

fatlazymummy - I did myself wonder about the male / female comparison and unfairness when it comes to hair removal when writing my OP. It may be MN consensus that hair removal should be entirely at individual discretion but I do wonder just how many women sport properly long leg, underarm or other body (or facial!) hair for any length of time in reality? The equivalent to a long-standing male beard I mean.

My husband has a short beard as it gives his chin some definition (he's a little overweight) and a shaven head and it really suits him. My eldest son has long, blond hair and a bushy, well kept ginger beard. He gets called Thor on a fairly regular basis. Grin

GurlwiththeCurl · 02/09/2014 17:37

OP, let us say that a moustache really hits the spot!

EatDessertFirst · 02/09/2014 17:38

DP has always had a goatee. He keeps it neatly trimmed and I love it! I don't think I could go near him with a smooth face. I probably wouldn't recognise him!

Cakebaker35 · 02/09/2014 17:39

Not so keen on moustaches but love a good beard! Jamie Dornan is my current winner fantasy of the best bearded celeb award.

Bulbasaur · 02/09/2014 17:39

I hate beards, but a very trim tight to the face beard can look alright.

Like this

But anything longer and I hate it.

Personally I like clean shaven men.

lifeafterthebigsmoke · 02/09/2014 17:43

Ooooo-errrr Gurl!! Grin
But what does the beard hit in that case....??!!

ValerieTheVodkaFairy · 02/09/2014 17:45

My DH has had a beard since he was 18 or so, except for a memorable accident the morning of his graduation, when he inadvertently gave himself a Brazilian wax

He really suits it. It's quite short- I do think the hipster bushes look very silly.

I love a hairy man :)

rockpink · 02/09/2014 17:45

OH had a beard when I met him, he looked like Paul Hollywood, and I thought it very handsome. Then he shaved it off and I discovered he has dimples underneath which are adorable. So I like both!

TeenageMutantNinjaTurtle · 02/09/2014 17:47

Yabu.
