To want "No Thanks" referendum posters to be available

GreenPetal94 · 31/08/2014 14:12

My street is overcome with Yes posters and so I thought I might put up some "No Thanks" or "Better Together" window posters. But there are none available on the Better Together websites, and so I searched further. Just nothing easy to printout out that is even A4 big. Meanwhile I find a whole load of Yes posters and these are easy to come by, on and off the internet.

Apart from the large Union Jack down the road, the No voters are remaining signage free.

Am I unreasonable to want Better Together campaign to have thought of this.

I have seen loads of no stickers on cars and houses with placards not where I live but houses in the trossachs with huge gardens land have placards wonder where they got them

NCforAye · 31/08/2014 14:28

That is strange. YANBU to want to be able to put an officially-designed poster expressing your view!

"Just Say Naw" sells some poster packs, but I don't know if they're part of the official BT campaign or a grassroots organisation. Indeed I think it's the latter as the font actually matches the "Yes" stuff distributed by the Yes campaign, rather than the rounded font of the BT "no thanks" graphic.

You could just go for a Union Jack (easier to get a high res image of), perhaps with a "No Thanks" in the corner, if you're handy with Publisher or something similar? I'm considering putting a saltire up because I'm terrified that a "Yes" poster is too explicit a statement for the area I live in. Confused The two flags have gained an interesting significance over the past month or so but for me it's ever so slightly subtler.

Maybe she is Grin but you are right the union jack has loyalist written all over it well it does where I stay

Pumpkinpositive · 31/08/2014 14:38

I am here. I am deeply worried as it now seems the yes/no margins are much closer than previously thought. Sad

But I wouldn't display a "Just say naw" banner in my window for reasons I can't really articulate and would need to unpack.

NCforAye · 31/08/2014 14:45

Pumpkinpositive

R.e. 'Just Say Naw' -- probably not everyone's cup of tea as a slogan, I know.

Do BT send out campaigner packs when you sign up as a supporter? (I think I got an envelope with some leaflets and a small poster when I signed up with Yes). Or perhaps campaigners on the streets have posters to hand out? The BT website has an events section I think which would list where street stalls etc are going to be...

I'm just genuinely intrigued by this - it had never occurred to me before that there wasn't the same availability of posters etc on both sides. This perhaps explains why in spite of the polls Yes seems more "visible" (to my biased eyes!). But then again visibility could have a role to play in the final vote, so it seems... silly that BT aren't making it easy for supporters to put posters etc up. Yes Scotland even have a shop for T-shirts etc and I was surprised to see BT didn't have the same.

Hurr1cane · 31/08/2014 14:46

There was some dude walking around town the other day with a massive Union Jack and a sandwich board that said united we stand on the front and divided we fall on the back.

Before I could read the sign I just assumed he was another racist having a rant about immigrants.

We aren't in Scotland and I don't know enough to have an opinion.

rainbowinmyroom · 31/08/2014 14:48

Well, the campaign should have been better organised then.

GreenPetal94 · 31/08/2014 14:50

When I go to the Better Together I can Volunteer, but I can't sign up in any other way.

I don't think I want to volunteer as I am working. I just want a wee poster.

Pumpkin Positive I kind of agree with you. The opposite to Yes is just to vote No, but do we need to campaign for the norm of the UK?

These are not suitable for my high up windows, but they make some fair points

DD1 (13) was talking about all the yes stickers the other day ...she articulated what I secretly suspect...
You don't see any No thanks posters because people are afraid of getting brick through their window if they put one up...
The Yes campaign do seem really aggressive....
If they asked me I'd say I was saying Yes - even though I'm now a decided No.
And it does seem close - which might be a good thing - I was worried that the No voters just aren't taking it seriously, won't bother to vote. Whereas the Yes voters - so who actively want change are more likely to vote...and we might get a Yes through apathy rather than desire.

popcornpaws · 31/08/2014 15:00

Thats weird, I think the No campaigners are very aggressive, and the bigots are out in force where i live, making it all about religion as per...

GreenPetal94 · 31/08/2014 15:03

I won't get a brick through my window as its not ground floor and we live in quite a posh area (although I hate to type that)

But I did consider this and that's sad

There is a no / yes sign (can't remember which sorry) on a tree locally which is a carved wooden sign.
It's beautifully. Made ands makes me smile every time I pass.
So op I challenge you to make one :)

Borderterrierpuppy · 31/08/2014 15:11

Beautifully made

unlucky83 · 31/08/2014 15:13

I just can't wait for it to be over to be honest - I dithered for ages ...but now am definitely a No. Actually more I have thought about it I am now dreading a Yes result...
I think it is all too uncertain ...too many empty words/promises, not enough hard facts....I've stopped reading the leaflets, I just get too annoyed.
Things like the one where Scotland has the potential to be the greatest power in Europe or similar - then you read it - Scotland has lots of countryside and coast and running water so COULD potentially generate lots of renewable energy - if we build the infrastructure (so can find that level of investment), want the Glens (tourist hot spots) covered in windmills and Pylons...basically if that was so easy/true and made financial sense the UK would have found the money to do it by now...

And for those who say Alex won't be in charge - as I understand it he will be in charge of sorting out the split and that fills me with horror.
I'm looking at it like a couple that split up and move into two houses. It is more expensive for both. Eg Instead of sharing light and heat they both have to have their own - so it costs twice as much.

Mrsjayy · 31/08/2014 15:18

Zazzle are doing posters and stickers but they are not offical iyswim, yes were round the doors the other week they gave out wind ow stickers I dont think better together have been round. I too cant wait for it to be over.

Mrsjayy · 31/08/2014 15:20

My husband saw a burnt out no in somebodies feild the other week thought that is commitment.

RJnomore · 31/08/2014 15:27

I can't wait for it to be over either.

We are headed for England on the 19th and depending on the result I might claim asylum while I'm there Grin

Mrsjayy · 31/08/2014 15:30

Take your passportGrin

frankie80 · 31/08/2014 15:33

the poster above has it right - lots of people I know who are voting 'no' have spoken about feeling intimidated, scared of getting their windows 'tanned' etc if they make it public that they are voting 'no'.

Yes, there's a lot of 'yes' posters, but that doesn't mean the Yes vote will win.

Personally, I don't think the 'yes' posters make a difference in persuading people, from what I've heard/seen, it has the opposite effect. the most common response being a less polite version of 'twats'.

Numanoid · 31/08/2014 15:43

I've only received abuse from No voters when out campaigning, every other time the reaction has been people beeping car horns and waving or shouting "Yes", or just smiling and nodding. I've only ever been approached in an aggressive way once, but dodged it and DP was nearby.
I don't think posters will have an effect, but it's heartening to see the ones from the campaign you're supporting.

OP, you could make one, I know quite a few people who have made posters, etc. :)

Numanoid · 31/08/2014 15:50

Acutally handmade would be a good idea, handmade stuff is always nice.

AFewFallenLeaves · 31/08/2014 15:54

I have decided against engaging with anyone over this in RL.

On MN I have seen the personal jibes against the no voters:

You are scared!
You are uninformed.
You are looking after selfish economic interests.
You are part of the establishment and dislike change.

And I am now officially disengaged until it's over!

AFewFallenLeaves · 31/08/2014 15:55

It's all nonsense Numanoid! I'd give you a smile!
