Really didn't want to use the word 'bad' Sad

DP's darling sister uploaded photos of her 9~ month old in McDonald's eating fries and chicken nuggets.

We KNOW junk food is bad, why give it to such a young baby? Why give it to your child at all?!

No it is not a lotus spread. I ve read about it here and i looked at my local lidl but i didnt find it.

It is hummus:P

puntasticusername · 30/08/2014 21:57

In all serious I did think it likely to be hummus, though that wasn't going to stop my next comedy guess being lemon drizzle Grin

WorraLiberty · 30/08/2014 21:58

Grin @ lemon drizzle Grin

My guess was breast milk...

Laquitar · 30/08/2014 22:00

Ha ha i havent tried chips with lemon drizzle!! Yet!

Chips and hummus is nice, it makes a.... balanced meal.

Madratlady · 30/08/2014 22:02

My ds has chocolate, chips, cake occasionally at 8.5mo. He usually has meals cooked from scratch and fruit or vegetables with each meal. Terrible mother or teaching him that all foods are ok in moderation?

That said I don't like MacDs because it's a bit crap. They do chips better than burger king though.

puntasticusername · 30/08/2014 22:02

Serenity but no way is a nine month old going to eat a whole Happy Meal! My DS (8m) will suck a couple of chips, mouth a nugget then get bored and start flinging it all off the high chair.

I agree with those who've said that there are much bigger things to get worked up about, and that Food Ishoos are actually more likely to be caused by frantically forbidding junk food entirely.

puntasticusername · 30/08/2014 22:05

Ooh chippy chips and bm, yum... Grin

I bet hummus is lovely on chips actually, am totally going to try that next time I get a chip craving and DH is out (so he can't ruin my enjoyment by boring on about how much he hates hummus, and he can't even bear the smell of it, really Punt can't you take it in the other room...?)

ILovePud · 30/08/2014 22:07

When I was a kid I knew a girl who wasn't allowed any processed sugar (birthday 'cake' used to be sugar free jellies in various shapes) she used to go wild at other people's houses and parties, gorging on the forbidden sweet stuff and snaffling things off other people's plates to stuff into her pockets for later.

ICanSeeTheSun · 30/08/2014 22:12

Apart from milk my dd 1st taste was coca cola full fat version, DS gave it to her. She eats everything apart from meat as she is a vegetarian through choice as she is 5 I do offer her meat every time I cook meat.

WorraLiberty · 30/08/2014 22:16

ICanSeeTheSun, try offering her gammon boiled in coke Grin

Sootgremlin · 30/08/2014 22:18

Now, I know nobody in real life who would feed such a small baby chicken nuggets and chips but according to many many people on this thread it's fine as part of a balanced diet for a 9 month old. I don't know one person in real life who thinks that.

I think it's fun to pull the rug out from under people when they write an OP with a judgey premise, but for everyone to say they think chicken nuggets and chips constitutes healthy moderation in the diet of baby 3 months into weaning seems bizarre to me.

I think you sounded a bit unpleasant in the way you spoke of your SIL being excited to have a baby then not looking after it properly to your standards, but I think you are not wrong on the MacDonalds front, it's salty, not great quality and not a brilliant thing to load up a tiny stomach with. However not a lot you can do, as not your baby or your business.

wheresthelight · 30/08/2014 22:23

My dd has just turned 1 and she loves chicken nuggets and chips at home and in McDonald's. the amount she eats when she has it is a minute amount on the scheme of all the fruit and veg she eats the rest of the time. and actually I request fresh chips that haven't been salted for her and me as I don't like them. she generally has a few of my chips and I steal a nugget from her brother or sister. she actually isn't a fan of the batter and prefers the in breadcrumbs

Solasum · 30/08/2014 22:31

I took my 8month old to McD this week as I needed somewhere child friendly, quick and easy, in a sea of 'boutique' cafes full of decorative twigs and stone floors. He had 2 chips, half a nugget, and some of my burger bun. Job done. And I got a cool dinosaur in my happy meal

ThatSmellsLikePoo · 30/08/2014 22:31

Sorry if this is out of place - I've read the first half of this thread and skipped to here because I was so Shock Shock - and a bit Angry - is that a thing then? The one where your parents can fuck up your entire lifetime relationship with food AND make sure you are a lard arsed fatster into the bargain? That would explain soooo much.

Picturesinthefirelight · 30/08/2014 22:34

It would be unhealthy to
Feed a baby that every day, yes. But lots of things are unhealthy. The majority if breakfast cereals for example not just the coco pops ones. Granola & Special K are really sugary. So are shreddies. Weetabix is not too bad though.

Yoghurt s are full of sugar, especially low fat ones. Even organic naice yoghurt (except natural yoghurt)

Pasta sauce in jars, pre made lasagne etc etc

But sometimes if you are out & about McDonald is a convenient place to stop. I used to call there once a week with dd when she was a toddler as that day we had a tight schedule & had to drive to be somewhere over lunchtime. I always asked for the fries with no salt

ThatSmellsLikePoo · 30/08/2014 22:34

My parents didn't allow any of us sweets, biscuits or crisps or anything like that ever. Not bloody ever. And so now we all - at varying stages of early middle age - have issues, terrible food problems and weight/health concerns.

sharonthewaspandthewineywall · 30/08/2014 22:34

I'd just love some maccy d's nuggets covered in salt right now god damn it

sharonthewaspandthewineywall · 30/08/2014 22:38

Arghhhh I always arrive to late! What was the typo?

ArsenicyOldFace · 30/08/2014 22:41

It's workoutable from what's there sharon

Serenitysutton · 30/08/2014 22:45

I think there are extremes- no sugar or junk food is an extreme. Giving a 9 mo McDonald's is quite a significant swing the other way. ( the extreme of which would be say, coca cola in the bottle)

Most people are in the middle. Like sootgremlin, I don't think I know anyone who would think mcds ok for a 9mo. They have all their lives to eat crap

Fabulous46 · 30/08/2014 22:45

DP's darling sister uploaded photos of her 9~ month old in McDonald's eating fries and chicken nuggets.

So what? This is her child, not yours. Are you the chicken nugget or McDonalds Police?

"Darling sister" says it all. Call Social Services. How dare she upload pics of her children that you don't agree with.

Wind your neck in and let her parent HER kids how she chooses.

flanjabelle · 30/08/2014 22:46

My ten month old could easily eat a whole happy meal (if she was given it) and still be hungry, and would have been able to at nine months. (She is on the 50 line for weight, so not at all overweight, just has a massive appetite.)

I never understand the replies on threads like this. Have I been hoodwinked into believing salt is worse for babies than it is? I thought it was actually quite dangerous to give babies salty food as their kidneys can't take it? Yes you can get fries without salt, but the nugget batter is full of salt.

I agree with the op, flame away, but it's pretty poor to be giving a 9mo mcds. No it doesn't make them a bad parent, but it's not a good choice either.

HaroldLloyd · 30/08/2014 22:46

I can't really get worked up about a baby having a bit of nugget.

I've tried and it just isn't happening.

HaroldLloyd · 30/08/2014 22:47

You can give them up to 1g a day.

It's really not a huge deal you know.

SanityClause · 30/08/2014 22:51

DD2's first solid food was a chocolate biscuit. She was 6 mo, sitting on my lap. I was eating the biscuit and she grabbed it out of my hand and shoved it between her gums.

There was no such thing as Facebook, then, though.
