So it is our 5th wedding anniversary soon. Dh and I have been talking about going on a short break- would be three nights. My mum has volunteered to babysit for my 2yo and will be 10 mo when we go. Part of me is really excited and wants a break. But i also feel really anxious about leaving dd2 for that long. Dd1 loves my mum and will be excited to be with grandma, but dd2 is mummys girl and has separation anxiety- guess i do too! So wwyd, would you leave them?

I would consider it with ds (20 months,) but admit I wouldn't with a 10 month old. This is partly because ds was still bf at 10 months which may not be a concern though, and you will know your own child better than anyone else..

MsVestibule · 29/08/2014 07:08

I went to Las Vegas for 11 days with my DH when our DCs were 3yo and 16 months, so you can guess what my answer is Grin.

Seriously, do you really think it will distress your DD2 too much? Has your mum looked after her for a few hours/overnight before?

Catzeyess · 29/08/2014 07:10

I would :) but then I don't have Children yet. Plenty of 10 month olds go to full time nursery if their mum only has 9 months maternity leave.

TerrifiedMothertobe · 29/08/2014 07:11

Do it. I'd jump at it and have little ones the same age.

guineapig1 · 29/08/2014 07:13

Go! You will have a lovely relaxing break and the children will be fine!

FrontForward · 29/08/2014 07:13

I would. Build up contact between now and then and she'll be fine

Anotherchapter · 29/08/2014 07:15

Go ! And have an amazing time!!!

Mushypeasandchipstogo · 29/08/2014 07:15

No I would not personally. I think that it is unfair on your mum to leave her with such a young child. One night yes three days no.

s88 · 29/08/2014 07:19

I would and I have dd age 5 and ds is almost 7 months

Bartlebee · 29/08/2014 07:21

Unless you're going to be stressing the entire time you're away, I'd say go for it!

BlackWings · 29/08/2014 07:21

Depends on the child really. I wouldn't if I knew my child was going through a separation anxiety phase.
My sister just left her 2 with my parents for 3 days and the youngest was distraught and kept bursting into tears. My mum found it very stressful as he just couldn't be comforted.
Only you know your dc though.

maffive · 29/08/2014 07:25

Could your Mum do a trial overnight stay with you close by, to see how she goes, before you book your trip?

WhoeverYouWantMeToBe · 29/08/2014 07:25

Do it, me and my sons dad had a 3 night centerparcs break when our child was 11 months and he was fine. Did us the world of good too!

Thegreatunslept · 29/08/2014 07:28

Go do it's great we recently left my mum and stepdad with my ds 15 months for a weekend away it was great!
We relaxed and enjoyed ourselves and my ds had a great time.

rallytog1 · 29/08/2014 07:31

Do it!

Delphiniumsblue · 29/08/2014 07:31

I think you will just have to make up your own mind- it will be about 50/50 on here. I would if they know grandma well and she comes to stay in your house.

Droflove · 29/08/2014 07:32

God yes. Its good for all of you. 3 days is very managable regardless of what happens.

GoblinLittleOwl · 29/08/2014 07:39

Couldn't you go away for just one day and night and possibly another day, and take a longer break next year if all goes well?

bedraggledmumoftwo · 29/08/2014 07:41

I think my mum will cope. I assume she will bring my dad as an extra pair of hands but she would do most of it. She has had them overnight before and I trust her to cope. She is probably excited about it actually. They live a long way away but visit frequently and would come and stay in my house so everything familiar.

I guess i am partly worried that she might not miss me! But I really really need a break and we need to do it while I am on mat leave really. She will have to go to full time nursery in January anyway.

I would yes. It's only 3 days

Go and enjoy yourself :)

bedraggledmumoftwo · 29/08/2014 07:44

We are talking about trying to see the northern lights, so not something we could postpone or do for less than three nights unfortunately. And I might try and do a trial one day but really need to book it now if we want to go! Just worried about emotionally scarring the baby.

God yes. I went to Dubai for a week when DD was that age. Was ace Grin

EmpressOfBedlam · 29/08/2014 07:48

I went away on my honeymoon for three nights when my dd was 9months old and it was fine. I missed her more than she missed me.

bedraggledmumoftwo · 29/08/2014 07:48

Wow, monkeyface, a whole week!

If I thought my mum would cope I'd have done it. As it is we've only had 2 nights away for a long distance wedding when mine were 5 & 2. We had to get 2 lots of people involved (my parents and PILs) as neither could have coped with more than a night.

We've since been for a night on our 10th wedding anniversary and roped in BIL/SIL, which worked so well we are plotting another escape.

I had a one nighter away as part of my 40 th with a friend when mine were 10 months and 3, and I missed the 10 mo very physically the whole time, I couldn't have done more time away. I had only just stopped bf as well, so sure that had an impact.
