Um, yes, obviously there would be a problem with singling out English students and charging them different fees.

That's why it's most likely that all EU students will be charged the same fees, and Scottish students will get a more generous support package to compensate for this.

Alternatively, fees will be based on a residency requirement alone, which is not discriminatory under EU law since it is not directly based on nationality.

StatisticallyChallenged · 29/08/2014 18:15

The white paper states that English students will be singled out -that's what is being proposed.

Criseyde · 29/08/2014 18:17

Yeah, I think that's stupid and unlikely to actually happen.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 29/08/2014 18:18

I guess like so many things this will be figured out after the Yes vote. I too can see no issue with a residency requirement for any student.

deeedeee · 29/08/2014 18:20

There's idiots everywhere, there's bound to be idiots voting yes . ( as I'm sure there are voting no)

There's also briiliant creative inspiring people voting yes. bellacaledonia.org.uk/2014/08/29/the-top-20-indy-posters-are/( as I'm sure there are voting no) . Aren't those posters beautiful?

SantanaLopez · 29/08/2014 18:22

Page not found. Maybe the beautiful creative inspiring people need to think about reality a bit more Wink

ChelsyHandy · 29/08/2014 18:22

A residency requirement may be indirectly, as opposed to directly, discriminatory.

The part of the White Paper I object to the most is that where it is implied that the European Court of Justice will "support" Scottish independence. So.misleading! I cant link to it because I'm on my phone, but I have linked it before.

Honestly, if I were forced to recommend reading anything, I would say read formal sources such as the White Paper and the recent legislative output of the Scottish Government, and make up your own mind.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 29/08/2014 18:26

The problem is, you have to be a certain sort of geek nerd person to seek, read, and analyse what can be incredibly dry documents. Which is why people need come up with shorter more readable alternatives.

deeedeee · 29/08/2014 18:26

Whoops!

Does this work?

bellacaledonia.org.uk/2014/08/29/the-top-20-indy-posters-are/

Criseyde · 29/08/2014 18:27

Yes, residency requirements may, in some cases, be indirectly discriminatory - but they are already applied to student maintenance packages across the EU and have not been found to be discriminatory.

ChelsyHandy · 29/08/2014 18:40

Yes, true Criseyde.

I do think the White Paper was prepared full in the knowledge that Scotland would not be an EU member state on independence, therefore policies stated within it that are not consistent with EU law are largely irrelevant.

ChelsyHandy · 29/08/2014 18:44

The Scottish Government makes its legislation very accessible, and one of the purposes of creating a Scottish Government was to do this, and to create legislation that was clear and accessible to the people of Scotland.

Are you saying the Scottish Government has failed in one of its main aims?.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 29/08/2014 18:46

I think they are clear and accessible to an educated person with good internet access and the time to do it. Obviously, not everyone in Scotland meets those three criteria.

JimMurphysHump · 29/08/2014 18:52

The property market in Aberdeen has gone quiet? I'm sure I read an article recently saying the average house price in Aberdeen has risen by £15k in 3 months and £12k in Aberdeenshire.

TeamScotland · 29/08/2014 18:56

The Aberdeen property market is as buoyant as ever. Whoever said it had slowed down is wrong. There's a dip every summer hols, true. There's no let up currently in the Aberdeen housing market. I have checked it daily (weekdays) for the past 15 years. It's my job!

Anecdotally....Friend last week sold his half million pound house in one day.

PacificDogwood · 29/08/2014 18:56

My, it's been lively in here today Grin

I'll need an hour or two to catch up!

StatisticallyChallenged · 29/08/2014 19:06

I see jim Murphy has had to suspend his campaign tour.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 29/08/2014 19:12

I see jim Murphy has had to suspend his campaign tour.

He should have done a John Prescott. (There have been some interesting photographs surface allegedly of the egg thrower who is wearing an earpiece.)

I'm not surprised he cancelled though - must have been pretty hard going to all that effort for no return.

deeedeee · 29/08/2014 19:15

Shame about Jim Murphy. George Galloway is obviously made of sterner stuff. Maybe they should have done a joint tour and watched each other's backs. Dangerous streets out there ;-)

Shame though. Playground behaviour. But hopefully something that anyone with a sense of perspective realises it doesn't characterise the entire Yes campaign. Anymore than Chelsy characterises the entire No campaign. Not that Chelsy would ever throw an egg at anyone ofcourse. Far too clever.

JimMurphysHump · 29/08/2014 19:16

bettertogether.net/blog/entry/statement-from-jim-murphy-on-suspending-his-tour

Oh dear. Poor Jim. He was just trying to have nice, civilised conversations with voters. It's not like he was standing on a crate shouting at folk walking by and ignoring any questions that didn't support his point of view. I feel for him.

WildThong · 29/08/2014 19:20

Pathetic behaviour actually, does their cause no good at all.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 29/08/2014 19:24

Pathetic behaviour actually, does their cause no good at all.

Indeed. Too much of it on both sides.

WildThong · 29/08/2014 19:24

Neither does sneering at the fact his tour has had to be suspended. Almost like being cheerleaders for the mob?

TheBogQueen · 29/08/2014 19:26

Wasn't it jim murphy who supported the abolition of student grants when he was president of NUS? To the point that he actually disregarded the views of members?

Also - does anyone remember endsleigh insurance at universities in the late '90's? they were everywhere on our campus. He was a director.

WildThong · 29/08/2014 19:26

indeed. Too much of it on both sides

Correct, just seems to be a lot more from the Yes side at the moment.
