I don't get paw sweat. I am very good at pastry with my freezing cold blue hands.

I fancy an eskimo roll now. Can I be bothered to make one though... Probaby not.

Just made bead. I may have kneaded a fruit fly into the dough. Oh dear.

ViviPru · 28/08/2014 17:40

This is interesting (apols if already linked to on the thread)

Iain speaks to The Guardian

GimmeMySquash · 28/08/2014 17:40

The editors are idiots, though, to have tried to create drama by cutting it like that. Don't they realise that people like me only watched GBBO and only allowed our children to watch it because it WASN'T a cut-throat posers-on-parade, like all the other Reality TV? Way to kill your product, as we all suspected would happen when it moved from BBC2 to BBC1. Even my primary-age daughter said she could see that it had been deliberately edited to "get Diana".

That is why we enjoy the GBBO, they ruined the product.

ScrambledSmegs · 28/08/2014 17:41

Oh yes, you're right Icimoi, it was RDF Media, wasn't it? And the BBC Trust was very annoyed about it.

Funny that they do this to Diana now, the production team must have known how the editing would make her look. Not fair in the slightest.

2rebecca · 28/08/2014 17:41

The death threats are mad and a reason I wouldn't go on reality TV. There are some unhinged people out there.
If you go on TV then you will be talked about, that's part of the deal. She doesn't have to read social media threads and I wouldn't if i were her. If you remove someone else's ice cream from a freezer on a TV show you think you'd think about how that may come across to the other contestants and to viewers though.
Creating a mega strop about how she had no room for her ice cream and demanding he remove it from her space would have been more sensible.

MarkWrightsLonelyBraincell · 28/08/2014 17:42

The Guardian's update on it.

GBBO spoiler

Conspiracy theories will abound even though it is all pre-recorded!

Icimoi · 28/08/2014 17:44

I'm so sad that a 69yr old lady is being vilified and torn apart on Twitter
to crucify a pensioner on social media has left a really nasty taste

What's the relevance that she's 69 or a pensioner? Would it have been OK if she were younger?

GimmeMySquash · 28/08/2014 17:48

Ok, so she left anyways due to ill health. There were no allocated freezers, they had three freezers between them as freezers had broken. All over a bit of icecream cake.

Badvoc123 · 28/08/2014 17:50

Hmmm.
All very odd. And sad.
It's really really spoiled GBBO for me tbh.
The editing was awful...and deliberately portrayed Diana as the perpetrator of the freezer debacle.
Yes, Iain was a bit silly having a strop, but under the circs he must have been furious and upset.
And where is Nancy in all this?
She is as much to blame as Diana IMO.
I hope Diana is feeling better now but I don't buy the illness claim tbh. She seemed quite tearful in the talk segment after the result and looked almost shell shocked.
I think she knew she had behaved badly and worried about how she had come across, both to the public and her other contestants.
Not sure if I will be tuning in again :(

Gruntfuttock · 28/08/2014 17:50

I see that The Guardian article says that Iain doesn't believe his ice cream was only out of the freezer for 40 seconds. I do think that his reaction to his dessert failing may well have been different if he hadn't felt sabotaged (whether he really was or not). I think it was anger from that incident with the freezer that contributed to his 'meldown' and he may have otherwise made the best of it and presented something even if the ice cream was never going to freeze properly.

Since we now know that Diana quit (because of illness) before the filming of the next episode, I think that must have made it even worse for Iain.

Gruntfuttock · 28/08/2014 17:51

'meltdown' that should have been. ^^

Iain's version:

But describing the moment, he said: "After I made meringue for the outside of my baked alaska, I went over to the freezer to check how my ice cream was re-freezing, as it had melted slightly on the outside just before I put it in. Then I realised Diana had left it out of freezer. She moved it out of the way to put hers in. That was the reason it melted.

"I've chatted to Diana a couple of times since but I've never asked her why she did it. The Bake Off told me it was out of the fridge for only a minute but I think it had to be a lot longer than a minute to melt as much as that. I was just really shocked that it had been taken out of the freezer. I don't know why it was taken out."

I must say, that accords much more with what we saw - except we don't know how long it was out of the freezer for - and I don't actually believe that it could have been edited in the way that Diana now suggests when she says that two unrelated incidents were put together.

However, I've heard that home made ice cream with sesame in is notorious for defrosting quickly, so it does seem likely it was only out of the freezer for a short time.

GimmeMySquash · 28/08/2014 17:52

She said on the radio, Ian warned her three days ago the knives were out for her. How did he know? Why did Mel/Sue/Paul tweet that the freezers broke down? So basically this mess was caused by BBC1 GBBO not having the right equipment and editing.

noblegiraffe · 28/08/2014 17:57

Why did Iain retweet Sue Perkins' tweet about it only being 40 seconds if he didn't think that was true?

I'm a bit disappointed that he dropped Diana in it with the Guardian. It might be his version of events, but for Diana's sake it might have been better to stay quiet.

ithoughtofitfirst · 28/08/2014 17:58

How were they supposed to edit it then? She took the ice cream out of the freezer and it melted. That's all I saw happen.

Icimoi · 28/08/2014 18:04

The editing was awful...and deliberately portrayed Diana as the perpetrator of the freezer debacle.

But according to Iain, she was. And FWIW, Sue Perkins doesn't suggest that anyone else took the stuff out of the freezer, and she was clearly watching what happened.

ModernToss · 28/08/2014 18:06

I'm a bit disappointed that he dropped Diana in it with the Guardian.

I was a bit disappointed that she didn't take responsibility at the time, although obviously nobody deserves vilification and death threats. Perhaps Iain is tired of toeing the party line. What a cock-up.

There is something distinctly odd about the timing of her departure.

WipsGlitter · 28/08/2014 18:07

Thanks for spoiling the spoiler there gimme!!

Seriouslyffs · 28/08/2014 18:08

I watched it for the first time after it was suggested to me as a 'nice calming restore your faith in human nature' antidote to an upsetting incident:here
I may never recover. Cake

GimmeMySquash · 28/08/2014 18:10

Sorry about that WipsGlitter, like others I hadn't read all the thread and this information is freely available in the press with no spoiler alerts, so why should I assume a spoiler was required. I am sorry for upsetting you though.
